Cruella 2

Post by Sotiris »

It's official. We're getting a sequel.
As Cruella heads into its second weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned the studio behind the Emma Stone-starrer is in early development on a sequel. Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for a sequel to the film that stars Stone as fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil.

Cruella debuted May 28 simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ under the streaming service’s Premier Access tier, making it available to purchase for $30. The film has earned $48.5 million globally. It received positive views and has been praised for its 1970s punk rock aesthetic.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

I don't buy that it's been that successful. They've been greenlighting everything they can think of to add more content to Disney+ for a while now; I expect a sequel will be relegated there rather than in theaters.

Already? What will the story be? Another remake for 101 Dalmatians, but similar to Maleficent?

I suppose I could see a sequel with Cruella v. a new nemesis, but the Baroness coming back for revenge sounds like it would be more fun to watch.

I hope that's not true. I mean, who knows, maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but I'm not sure I think she'd be able to pull off a big role. I hope they bring Thompson back and find a way to have a flash forward with Glenn Close at the end. If they were looking for big actresses to play a new diva nemesis, I mean, there's Meryl Streep who played what is probably the 2nd most well-known mean fashion queen after Walt's Cruella herself.

RUMOR: ‘Cruella 2’ Will Be A Musical, Taylor Swift Wanted For The Villain Role?
https://thedisinsider.com/2022/09/01/ru ... lain-role/

Paul Walter Hauser, who played Horace in Cruella, also talked recently about the state of the sequel:
Thompson: Finally, I’d like to touch on the Cruella sequel. Do you know where things are at with that project?

Hauser: I’m told we’re doing it next year. I don’t know when but I think Tony McNamara is writing the script right now. He’s probably tinkering away with that. We got to work around the ever-busy schedule of Craig Gillespie and Emma Stone, who are worth the wait, so anytime they want to do it, I’ll be there.

I wonder if they got inspired to turn the sequel into a musical by Joker 2. Personally, I'm not fond of the practice of changing genres for sequels. If the first was a musical, I want the sequels to be musicals too. If the first wasn't a musical, then I don't want any continuation to be musicalized. It feels jarring to have characters sing in the sequel when they weren't in the original. An isolated musical sequence would be easier to justify and make believable by presenting it in the form of a dream, hallucination, or fantasy than a full-blown musical.

Cruella is one of the few "Live-action remakes" (although I don't really think of it as one) that I liked. Making the sequel a musical kind of bugs me though. I do think a fun way to spin this would be to have the Taylor Swift character as a 70's Pop Star who is just a menace and breaks into song spontaneously to the bewilderment of the rest of the cast. Like, Taylor's villain character lives in a musical but no one else does. I can buy that.

Either that or the musical numbers are a part of Cruella's growing madness. Acknowledge that no one else sees/hears what's in Cruella's head. Then it has little impact on the original film. I've kind of figured that's how Joker's sequel was handling this as well.
