I don't mind it as long as the best actor for the job gets it but I'm mostly entertained at Rick Riordan choosing the worst possible takes to defend her casting and the ever morally superior Percy Jackson fans going out of their way to have her social media accounts taken down (I think she was banned from TikTok twice now). Guess he now has the perfect excuse once the show doesn't take off as expected

That's all true. "White" is often the default setting, especially if the author is also white. But if a character is made a different race, then that does often factor into their life. It's also controversial to change a POC's race to white in a movie, due to how many less parts exist for actors who aren't white. As a white person, I see nothing wrong with a white fictional character having their race changed in other media. There is no shortage of roles for white actors in films and television shows.

I've seen people mention Annabeth having grey eyes in the books and how the series might not do that. Which makes me think of how they initially tried giving Daniel Radcliffe green contact lenses to play Harry Potter, because Harry is very specifically described as having green eyes in the books. However, he had an allergic reaction and so they immediately got rid of those and they stuck with Radcliffe's natural eye colour. Similarly, Hermione is described as having buck teeth in the books. They shot a few scenes with Emma Watson having false teeth, but it looked off and she had trouble saying her lines through them. So those were also discarded, although you can still see them in the last scene (which was one of the first to be filmed) with Watson having to ADR her lines. The HP fans didn't seem to mind these alterations too much.

There was a different sort of extreme reaction to The Hunger Games. There were readers who didn't like that a black actress was cast to play Rue...even though the books specifically describe Rue and the other people in her district as having dark skin. The book fans seemed to be less upset at Jennifer Lawrence's casting as Katniss, though, despite Katniss having olive skin in the books.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland

Disney's Divinity wrote:And it goes to a bigger question about why studios don't create original product or choose original stories that feature Black characters rather than "racebending" characters in remakes or new adaptations anyway?
Because they want the brand recognition and built-in audience that comes with pre-existing IP. It's ironic though that they alienate a good chunk of that audience by usually changing the race or gender of characters from those properties.
Disney's Divinity wrote:FWIW, the main guy doesn't exactly look how I envisioned Percy either, tbh.
Maybe that's because Percy is a brunet in the books while the actor they picked is blond. There was a small controversy about that, too.
rodrigo_ca wrote:Percy Jackson fans going out of their way to have her social media accounts taken down (I think she was banned from TikTok twice now).
How? Did they make false reports on her account en masse? Shouldn't there be a system in place to prevent such abuse? In any case, I'm sure her account will be reinstated sooner rather than later. Needless to say, these online harassment practices are abhorrent and it's sad that people resort to such things. Don't they understand that the actors taking these roles are not at fault? The best way to make your voice heard in these cases is simply to not consume the product in question. Nothing else works.

I didn't have any reaction to Rue being Black either. But I thought she was in the book anyway? :? Well, that sucks if Annabeth won't have grey eyes... That actually bothers me unlike the racebend. Because her grey eyes were supposed to be the same as her mother Athena's, I thought?

It's not simply changing a POC into a White character that never happens... A character of color is never racebent into a different non-White race either--a Black character being Latina in a different adaptation, or a Latina character being Asian in a different adaptation. It's clearly one standard for White characters versus another standard for all others. But, like I said at the end of the last page, this one doesn't bother me as much as a character like Snow White that is literally named for their appearance. If they were determined to racebend, an Asian actress could've fit that description.

And that's another thing--they were determined from the outset to racebend, which means they didn't pick actors based on talent alone? Everyone aside from the one race they wanted wouldn't have been looked at at all (and not just White actors--if they decided the character would be Latina on a whim, no Black actresses or Asian actresses were considered either). And I question that even being strict to one race that they picked the most talented people among those actors--Halle Bailey doesn't seem like an especially great actress on black-ish so much as she was probably recommended by Beyonce who's been working with Disney, and having seen WSS, I already know Rachel Zegler isn't that great of an actress and she wasn't nominated at the Oscars like most of the rest from that film for that reason. (The White actresses they got for the princesses in Maleficent, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland were weak, too, though, to be fair. )In Mulan's case (where the character was always a POC), the actress was so bad they had to do re-shoots to fix her scenes...
Sotiris wrote:Because they want the brand recognition and built-in audience that comes with pre-existing IP.
To me, it's an example of their cowardice. They don't want to actually risk anything by going with original product, they want to pat themselves on the back for diversity by putting them in remakes that will be gone in 10 years while the still-White originals remain; an original character with a diverse cast actually will last and have enduring impact because of it.

Good point.

That's true. Studios no longer practice colorblind casting; they practice "color-conscious" casting which means reserving characters for specific races. Add that to the quotas and the mandates the studios have imposed, and the playing field is never leveled in order for the most talented or suitable actor to get the part.

Sotiris wrote:It's interesting the author chose to blame the fans for their reaction to race-bended casting instead of taking responsibility for his part. He could have included characters of color in his Percy Jackson series, but he didn't. He could have left open or ambiguous the race and skin color of his characters, but he didn't. Now, he attacks the fans for pointing out the discrepancy between the character's description and the casting? He has only himself to blame for this, especially since he spent years criticizing the movies for aging up his characters. How is a character's age a more important physical trait than their race? Why does a character's age absolutely needs to be accurate to the book, but not their skin color? It seems completely arbitrary and makes him look like a hypocrite.
I’m not at all surprised by this, especially with you saying that he is a hypocrite which I truly know that he is. He claims that he doesn’t want to see the movies because “it will change how he views his characters“ let alone with all the changes to the movies which he already knows about, And yet as you can see on the lightning thief Blu-ray and DVD extras, he goes and visits the Set clearly seeing how the characters Etc. are going to be with all the changes, And even saying how “I can’t imagine a better Director than Chris Columbus”.

Why on earth would he do all of that, completely contradicting what he has stated over the years? You can also even tell in the tone that he has written that comment about the fans reaction to Annabeth‘s casting that he is trying to defend himself for his contradictions and Ignorance, much more obviously than J. K. Rowling when she does a similar thing. I also Believe that he is quite naïve or even ignorant towards the fact that he has ADHD well if you read the Percy Jackson books you can tell that it is written by someone who has ADHD per the style pacing repetitiveness and iffy material that exists throughout, which is Why I like the movies even with their flaws way better than the books for least they actually feel grounded and focussed and ironically without feeling like someone who has ADHD actually better portraying ADHD however subtly in Lightning thief’s movie especially actually having characters like Percy and Annabeth actually feel like they have ADHD which he never really portrayed directly in the books despite the books overall writing style like I just said

Variety is reporting three new cast members have been added to the Percy Jackson series.

And if you're a WWE fan, you just might recognize one of them.

Haha, yeah this show was a pass for me already, but now it’s a hard pass.

I can’t believe how they continue to cast this guy and expect us to be in awe. I can live with his writing, but in front of the camera he is guaranteed cringe.

Because Hollywood worships the ground he walks on, that's why. And of course he's too narcissistic to realize his limitations. He's truly dreadful as an actor. Utterly unwatchable. He ruined Mary Poppins Returns and His Dark Materials for me. He's also not a good singer (or rapper ) for that matter. While not remarkable, at least he's competent as a songwriter and a director.

To answer both questions, yes her “whiteness” is important because it’s to break the “blonde=dumb“ Stereotype, which is one of the main points of her overall character. Even in the first lightning thief movie, despite her not being blonde, she was able to still more accurately portray that going against stereotype
