Disney's Divinity wrote:Oh, wow, I didn't know that. I mean, I still like it personally, but I thought Elton was going to be writing the song for Beyonce that was in-film? And then TLK: The Gift would be her own thing?
I'm sure he thought the same. No wonder he was upset with his diminished role in the remake and blasted Disney in that interview. They only allowed him to write one song and that was just for the end credits. He had no say in how the renditions of his songs would be arranged and performed either.

Well. I guess it goes without saying that Disney's disrespectful treatment of their past songwriters continues to be very disappointing. :( I won't lie, I wasn't crazy about "Never Too Late," but I definitely think he could've written a great ballad for Nala similar to Menken's new songs for the Beast and Jasmine.

These are the Critics' Choice nominees for Best Song:

Glasgow (No Place Like Home) – Wild Rose
(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again – Rocketman
I’m Standing With You – Breakthrough
Into the Unknown – Frozen II
Speechless – Aladdin
Spirit – The Lion King
Stand Up – Harriet

I'm surprised "Into the Unknown" didn't win in the Animated Film category. And it's a shame "Speechless" didn't win in the Feature Film one, but I quite like "Stand Up" too. I find its lyrics a bit too literal, but it's not a bad song.

I can see the Oscars matching this line-up, with the song from Harriet potentially being the most vulnerable. In recent years, the Academy's music branch has tended to throw in a song from a documentary.

The Wrap has posted the complete list of eligible songs submitted for the Oscars this year. Some titles that have been deemed ineligible for the Best Song and Best Score categories have also been revealed.

The Academy shortlists for these and other categories will be published tomorrow. I think this is not a very competitive year in the song category, so I expect several songs from Disney to make the cut. But we'll see.

Thanks for the information. It's really odd Disney submitted the song from Alita: Battle Angle but didn't bother submitting the one from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Just doesn't seem fair.

I'm surprised "Beautiful Ghosts" from Cats didn't make the cut. The rest of the entries were expected. I'm glad Elton John's "Never Too Late" from The Lion King made it through. How on earth did Frozen 2 make the shortlist in the score category? Musicals clearly violate the Academy's rules, and especially Frozen 2 which had more songs than the typical Disney musical. The violation is so blatant. They did the same thing with La La Land. Do they ever follow this rule or is it only enforced when it's an Alan Menken musical?

I’m surprised “Catchy Song” was submitted over “Everything’s Not Awesome” from TLM2.

Only three songs from The Lego Movie 2 were submitted ("Catchy Song", "Not Evil", and "Super Cool") and only one ("Catchy Song") made the shortlist.

I only assumed they must not have submitted it because who would choose "Catchy Song" over "Everything's Not Awesome" unless there was no choice? :? I suppose I'm expecting Disney's shenanigans from everyone. My personal favorite is "Not Evil," but I wouldn't have expected it to be submitted or nominated.

I think "Everything's Not Awesome" wasn't submitted because it's not really an original song but a variant of "Everything Is Awesome" from the first movie, which was already nominated. If they had submitted it, it would probably have been disqualified.

Yeah, I agree.
Sotiris wrote:I'm surprised "Beautiful Ghosts" from Cats didn't make the cut.
Yes, that was the biggest snub. I didn't think it would end up being nominated, but I expected at least it would make the shortlist. Personally, I didn't like the song much. I only liked parts of it. I don't know much about music, but to me the structure seemed a bit strange.

I don't like that either. Applying the rules when they don't want a film to be nominated and making exceptions when they do is not fair. The rules should be the same for all movies.

"(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. This is Elton John's (music) fifth Golden Globe nomination and second win and Bernie Taupin's (lyrics) fourth Golden Globe nomination and second win.

To be honest, although I liked several of Frozen 2's songs, I'm glad none of them won. Congrats to Rocketman!

That's one of the only categories I had predicted correctly. There were a lot of surprises last night at the Golden Globes! I think "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" can win at the Oscars too.

Outside of the feeling of schadenfreude for Disney, no, I don’t really think the Elton John song deserved to win. *shrug* I like Elton John in general though. I think this was more about rewarding him for his entire career as an artist and had little to do with the individual songs.

I don't think it's the best song of the year either. The HFPA tends to award the most famous musical artist rather than the best song, that's why I wasn't surprised by Elton John's victory. And this year there isn't a song that stands out above the rest like "Shallow" last year, so I think this win could increase his chances at the Oscars. Though the song category is usually quite unpredictable, so we'll see.

I agree with you that there's no real frontrunner for Best Song this year. Nothing like Let It Go, Shallow, or anything from La La Land. I wouldn't mind if Into the Unknown won, and I'd be elated if Speechless was nominated and won, but I'm honestly rooting for Elton John just because of how Disney treated him. Hopefully it'll teach them a lesson with how to treat Menken in future films like Mermaid, Hunchback, and Enchanted 2.
