Turning Red

Post by Sotiris »

The director of the short "Bao", Domee Shi, is working on an original feature at Pixar.
Shi doesn’t look like other Pixar directors — just 28 years old, she’s not white, nor male — but her short “Bao” fits beautifully into the studio’s oeuvre, and the company’s so-called Brain Trust so loved one of her other original ideas that they’ve invited her to develop it into a feature.

I wonder if she'll be allowed to flourish or will she be stomped by The Formula.

Wow, hard to imagine having a director two years younger than I am. I'm not a fan of the character design of the bao character, but I know that doesn't say anything about her directing ability.

Good for her! I am rooting for her success, SO MUCH.

Hearing what happened to Brave's original director and Pete Sohn being shoved into The Good Dinosaur....PLEASE let this be successful in terms of her telling what SHE wants + a box office hit.

As I am of asian descent and an animator, I am really rooting for her success.

Now the question is: what ethnicity will her characters be? Hmm. When I first heard of her original short, I thought, "Oh pssh...a SHORT? I'd love to see them give her the director's seat." But here we all are, months later!

She certainly is young blood!

Here's hoping she gets to tell the story she wants to in the way she wants to tell it :float:

Bao's Domee Shi is now on the path to making her feature debut, with the backing of one of the most impactful animation studios in the world. “We're just developing the story for it right now,” Shi says. “It's super early on, but I'm really excited to play in this new 90-minute film format.” A storyboard artist behind a key sequence in Incredibles 2 and the upcoming Toy Story 4, Shi's experience with Bao—a learning process, in which she took the reins and offered up her voice—demonstrates just how significant Pixar's shorts are, as a platform to launch exciting new voices into the animation world.

I'm really hyped for this! Sounds like it's going to be the first Pixar film to break the dominant Lasseter mold that has defined all the rest.

Q: Domee, you’re going to direct a Pixar feature that’s going to be released in 2022. How did you get the news that you’re now going to be taking on a feature?

Domee Shi: I think it was while we were wrapping up “Bao”, our President invited me to his office. And then he said, “We’d like you to start developing some ideas for feature films at Pixar. Do you want to do it?” And I was like, “Yes!” (laughs) “Are you sure? Okay.”

Becky Neiman-Cobb: Before you change your mind!

Domee Shi: We’re still in development right now. We’re still hammering out the story.

Becky Neiman-Cobb: There’s no release date.

Domee Shi: There’s no real, solid release date right now. Even though I’m in development for it, I’m still super paranoid and superstitious. Anything can happen. I don’t even know if this will ever see the light of day. But I’m just happy that I’m able to get paid to work on cool stories that I come up with in my head – and work with awesome people that can make that happen.

I'd be surprised if many people would turn down the chance to create their own films. She seems really nice. I still need to check out her short.

A lot of people would, because its a big commitment. And its one thing to have an idea for a movie, but actually getting in there and making those key decisions it can be overwhelmingly difficult and stressful.

Adorable-sounding? My curiosity is piqued.
Domee Shi is directing an adorable-sounding movie for Pixar right now.

So this is Domee Shi's project. That synopsis is incredible. Between Luca and this, I think even PIXAR is in a better place without Lasseter around (and I know Disney is).

And like Luca, the design makes me think of Ghibli. My Neighbor Totoro anyway.

So I got my job back at the museum I used to work at before the pandemic, and one of our big draws is the skeleton of an ancient North American ancestor of the Red Panda. We use lots of images of the modern red panda throughout the museum and of course we sell lots of plushies of red pandas. What I’m saying is— this will be big for our merch sales haha.

It looks cute. The concept is interesting. It reminds me more of Katie Ka-Boom from Animanics than The Hulk. The character design for the human is not my cup of tea. It's a mix of Ghibli with CalArts style. Going by Luca and this film, it looks like the dreaded bean mouth shape has infected Pixar too.

Here's the full synopsis:
Turning Red, a new feature film opening in theaters on March 11, 2022, introduces Mei Lee, a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Turning Red is directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.
