If I had to guess at some point over the coming years there’s going to be enough new content on a weekly basis to spread premieres out over several days. As opposed to launching everything on a single day of the week.
Well, Patrick, it's funny you say that!

Bob Chapek says Disney+ expects to launch a new series, movie, or big library release every week by the end of the year.

I could act like I have a crystal ball but I don’t :) . It’s quite clear streaming is just TV reinvented.

That and I work in TV programming haha

 I figured you were a psychic. :) Working full-time and going to bed early, I just will NEVER catch up with all the programming I'm interested in on Disney+, but I'm thrilled that there are plans for so much new material (and catalogue material- please more shorts!).

A big library release every week is very exciting. Hope to see more Walt-era films being added. So Dear to My Heart and Son of Flubber are the ones I'm most awaiting. And Make Mine Music is, of course, a must.

Grammy Award-winning and chart-topping artist Billie Eilish will make her Disney+ debut with "Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles," a cinematic concert experience, premiering globally on Friday, September 3. Fresh off the heels of her brand-new album, "Happier than Ever," the Disney+ original will feature an intimate performance of every song in the album's sequential order – for the first and only time – from the stage of the legendary Hollywood Bowl.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and by Oscar-winner Patrick Osborne the special will also include animated elements, taking viewers on a dreamlike journey through Billie’s hometown of Los Angeles and its most iconic backdrops. “Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles” features FINNEAS, the Los Angeles Children's Chorus, the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, and world renowned Brazilian guitarist, Romero Lubambo, with Orchestra Arrangements by David Campbell. “Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles” was produced by Interscope Films and Darkroom Productions, in associate with Nexus Studios and Aron Levine Productions, with Kerry Asmussen as the Live Concert Director and Pablo Berron as Director of Photography.

“Billie is a big fan of classic movies that are set in L.A. as well as hybrid animation/live action classics like Richard Williams’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Ralph Bakshi’s Cool World, so we wanted to pay homage to these fictitious versions of Los Angeles that only exists in movies,” says Osborne during a recent phone interview. “That was the basis of our plan, to construct this modern version of a classic animated character, which ended up being a noir animated femme fatale version of Billie against live-action backdrops of L.A.”

The animation, which was produced at Nexxus in London, with the aid of Digital Frontier and Zoic Studios, was a combination of CG with some drawn-over motion-capture footage. “We did about 90-minutes of motion capture of Billie, but what we got was iconic,” says Osborne. “She has this way of moving and interacting with the camera as well as breaking the fourth wall. We only had about 12 weeks, so we had to do everything very quickly.”

Overall, Osborne and his team created about 12 minutes of animation for the Disney+ special. “We were editing the footage up until last week,” he says. “Some of the stuff was left on the cutting room floor. We also have some great motion graphics animation from Robertino Zambrano for one of the songs.” The live-action footage was shot by Pablo Berrone.

The veteran animator says he pre-vized everything from the motion capture shoot in Blender to build the interstitial scenes based on the performances they had. “Then, we would hand-animate and clean-up on top of that footage later. It was a fascinating and fun editorial process. There were storyboards, but they were simple drawings, maybe one per shot. It wasn’t your typical animatic. We had about five or six animators on the Billie animation. Sallyanne Massimini was our vfx supervisor who oversaw all the studios on the project.”

The longtime Disney animator put all his experience and skills to work on the special, which from start to finish, took a mere three months to produce. “I've been working with Nexus Studios over the last year on various projects,” he tells AWN, “and they’d been talking to Disney+ and Interscope about doing this concert film for only a couple days before it was brought to me to possibly work on. This was about 13 weeks ago. So, whatever was going to happen would have to happen quickly.”

“Billie had this idea of doing an animated character of herself that would go along with her new look,” he continues. “At the time, she was not blonde yet. She was just about to launch the change in her vibe that was part of her album release plan. She told me she loved this 80s look, referencing all kinds of things, including Richard Williams and Ralph Bakshi. Obviously, we're on a tight schedule that's going to make it really difficult to do rotoscope-style animation. But the plan was to come up with a cool, noirish story of a trip through vintage LA, inspired by Williams and Bakshi, people like that, and see what we could create that was exciting. That was on a Monday. We talked more about it on Tuesday; I talked to Robert about it on Wednesday, and off we went. Things happened that fast.”

It quickly became clear they’d have to find a fast way to capture that physicality if they were to have any hope to build on that for the special. Knowing they wouldn’t have Eilish for a week to shoot on location, and figuring they had no time for “old-school rotoscope,” Osborne searched for a way to deal with the challenge. “How do I do this [rotoscope] in a modern way?” he says. “How do I do it differently? How do I do it efficiently with only a few hours of Billie's time?” They settled on “putting her in a suit and capturing her unique motion,” then applying their version of rotoscope on top of that performance. “We settled on a mix of rendering the motion capture with hand keying on top, trying to find a look that would work, where we could get her likeness, her motion, but still have that 80s roto vibe.”

While a more reasonable schedule would have allowed for several months of live shooting, followed by months to rotoscope it all, with only 12 weeks, Osborne had none of that luxury. “So, what I did was call on some friends, call in some favors, to get it done, because it was going to be tight,” he laughs again. “Zoic Studios in London and LA, Nexus in London and a company called Digital Frontier FX in the Marina here in LA, all contributed different parts. We divvied it up based on specialties.”

Having worked with Nexus on hand keyed animation over the last year, Osborne had them “take the reins on the most magical, more surreal parts of the story,” with Zoic and Digital Frontier taking on some of “the grounded stuff.” “Zoic did a bunch of the comping and making it integrate and look nice with the final images,” he adds. “And the trickiest part about all of that was we only got the Hollywood Bowl footage in early July, so we literally had three or four weeks to add animation to that stuff. Not very long.”

Just thought I’d remind and encourage people to please keep requesting new shows and movies and new other things for the service, as that is truly the only way that we can get such things that we want on there however eventually it will take :-) Heck, even just requesting things like such and such’s extras Such as those from their Blu-rays And other home media that you want, And even Requesting things like harry potter [after all it will eventually have to go to streaming somewhere sometime; yes I know, HBO max, but we Canadians do not have That, so they could pick it up as outside US streaming like what Netflix did for Shadowhunters :-)under request a new show/movie may very well help IT to happen someday :-)
