Question about Clarabelle Cow

Post by Tristy »

Did she ever speak in the original cartoons? I know she talks in House of Mouse and Three Musketeers. But I do not recall her speaking in the older cartoons.

One of the few times Clarabelle spoke on film in the Walt days was in "Mickey's Fire Brigade" where she screams "help help" (etc.) in the tub while Mickey, Don and Goofy come to the rescue. Their comedic efforts are in conflict with her modesty. Reportedly, her voice was done by classic character actress Elvia Allman (much later nosy Selma Plout and Elverna Bradshaw on "Petticoat Junction" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" -- and the bossy candy factory lady on "I Love Lucy" among many other classic TV appearances).

Offscreen, she talks a lot in the Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse comic strips where her character is most interestingly developed as Minnie's brassy comic sidekick.

Clarabelle is getting some love: Even though she's a cow, she's the symbol for Shanghai Disney's Year of the Ox:

It's good to see her getting some attention!
