Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (Remake)

Post by Sotiris »

A remake of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is coming to Disney's streaming service.
The Disney brand extension is expected to make a heavy push into film with an eye on Disney's robust library of family titles. The Parent Trap (1998), Father of the Bride (1991) and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) are among the first projects on the table for potential film reboots, sources say.

I hope this doesn't interfere with the Hunchback remake.
We have exclusively learned that Walt Disney Pictures is developing a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, with Josh Gad attached to star. Here’s what we know about the reboot, which will be set in the same universe as the original movies.

I have independently confirmed with three sources that Walt Disney Pictures has signed actor Josh Gad to star in a Honey, I Shrunk The Kids reboot/sequel. In the original film, Rick Moranis played a scientist father who accidentally shrinks his teenage son and daughter (alongside some neighborhood kids) to just a quarter of an inch in size. They must then adventure through their backyard to return home while fending off insects and other massive-sized obstacles.

The plan is for the movie to be set about three decades after the 1989 original, with Gad set to play the grown-up version of scientist and inventor Wayne Szalinski’s son, Nick Szalinski. The new movie, which will be titled Shrunk, will be a reboot of the original film, but positioned as a “legecyequel,” which means it will exist in the same world and continue the overall storyline. And yes, Nick Szalinski accidentally shrinks his kids, which kickstarts the story of the film.

In February 2018, it was reported that live-action remakes of several films are in development as exclusive content for Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming streaming service, Disney+, with a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids remake named alongside the possibilities. However, we’re told that this project is aiming for a theatrical release and will not be a Disney+ original. Disney is currently on the lookout for a filmmaker who has nostalgia for the original property.

I'm here for this re-make. Well, it's more of a sequel really; I hope they get the actor who played the Dad back for this, even if it's a cameo/background role. The effects will be crazy.

“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to helm Disney’s upcoming reboot of the film franchise, “Shrunk,” with Josh Gad in talks to star. Gad pitched the story idea to Disney earlier this year, and the studio jumped on board the idea of reviving the classic 1989 pic starring Rick Moranis. “Shrunk” will mark the third sequel following the original film, with “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” and direct-to-video “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves” bowing in 1992 and 1997, respectively. Johnston was not involved with either film. The studio met with other directors but felt bringing Johnston back was a perfect fit for all involved. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing through their Mandeville Films and Television banner, with Todd Rosenberg penning the script.

In the original film, Moranis plays Wayne Szalinski, a scientist and father who accidentally shrinks his teenage son and daughter, along with the two brothers from next door, to just a quarter of an inch in size. When they are thrown out with the trash, the four kids must travel through their backyard to return home while fending off insects, lawnmowers and other obstacles. In this version, Gad will play Wayne’s grown-up son, who follows in his father’s footsteps by not only becoming a scientist, but also accidentally shrinking his children.

The studio had flirted with the idea of debuting the film on Disney Plus, but Rosenberg’s recent draft elicited enthusiasm from execs. Now, the plan is to release the film theatrically. Sources also add development is still in early stages and a greenlight has not yet been given.

I'm glad they're considering hiring the original director and I like Josh Gad, so if the script is not too bad, I hope it gets greenlit.

Josh Gad wrote:Doing a lot of back and forth on the script for the new Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel that hopefully we'll get back to shooting shortly, which I could not be more excited about. We got to bring back Rick Moranis as my father and Joe Johnston, the director of the original.

Q: I am very interested and excited about Shrunk, the return to the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids universe, especially with the return of Rick Moranis and Joe Johnston. I’m curious what that project is feeling like right now, if there’s any updates. What’s exciting you about it?

Josh Gad: Well, what’s exciting is also what’s heartbreaking, which is we’re supposed to be shooting right now in Atlanta. (laughter) We were very far along on pre-production. Obviously, with cases surging across the country right now, everything’s been put on pause, rightfully so. So our current plan is to wait until everyone feels safe to make the film. I think all of us are so eager to get back to work, but at the same time, want to protect Rick, want to protect Joe, want to protect me, want to protect everyone involved, especially because there are kids in the movie as well. So we’re not going to do it until it all feels like it’s the right time to step back in, which I hope will be sooner rather than later. But at the rate in which we’re sort of going backwards right now, I wouldn’t hold my breath for any time soon. (laughter) But our plan is still to be on set, I would say, within the next couple of months. But anything can change.

With Gad set to star in Shrunk (the sequel to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids) as the son of Wayne Szalinski, the scientist originally played by Rick Moranis, I was curious how that project was taking shape. He said: “Fingers crossed think we’re going to hopefully be shooting early next year. That is the status right now. Now the status is ever changing but we’re all feeling really confident about it.”

One of the positive aspects of the current situation is that they have more time to work on the scripts of the movies whose shootings have been delayed. Hopefully, that would result in better movies, but we'll see.

Same with Hunchback, why is he begging people to let Disney know they want a movie made. Sir, you're the one with the connections.

Well, it’s kind of like a Snyder cut situation here; if there’s enough enthusiasm and interest display to Disney, then they will do it :-)
