IMDB Rating Walt Era DAC

Post by rodis »

Hi all

So, I want to share something that's really been bugging me.
Anyone noticed how the great classics, Walt-era films have steadily declined in IMDB ratings?

For instance:

Just a few years ago Snow White was in the late 7.0's, now its 7.6.
Pinocchio went down from 7.6 to 7.5.
Bambi down from 7.6 to 7.4 also in a matter of a few years.
Not to talk about Cinderella and SB down to 7.3 and 7.2 respectively.

Randomly reading some of the reviews, some point out to the fact that either the story is too lean (Bambi), or relying too heavily on sidekicks (Snow White), etc. But especially criticizing the princesses for being passive (yeah, it's become a trend!)

Now I can't deny some if these claims but these movies should be viewed within the context of their times. Surely Casablanca or Gone with the Winds shouldn't and needn't be reflected upon by today's values and sentimentality...

A film like Snow White deserves a solid 8-8.5 just for the sake of being such an unprecedented pioneer in its genre.

What do you guys think?

I don't know much about IMDB's rating system, but they're user ratings? I wonder if a lot of younger people are rating the movies, and they like the newer movies more?

I typed out each movie's rank (out of 10 points), its popularity number, and how much that number went up or down. I started with the newest movies and went down, to see if we saw a significant decrease in points. (I bolded the rankings of 7.5 and higher.)

I wouldn't put too much stock in IMDB's ratings, they're ranked by users. I know there's a trend to not listen to professional critics, to claim that they're out of touch and such, but they actually understand that process of filmmaking and they understand that context that you mentioned. I absolutely agree about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and I would absolutely put it beside films like Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. But most people who come to IMDB to rank the older Disney films think "well I read that Snow White is a weak passive character I read that in that BuzzFeed article, also she's a princess and princesses are lame LMAO".

I guess you're right but so many people reference that site to determine whether to watch a movie or not or if it's even "good or not".
