It's official!
During Disney+’s presentation at Disney’s D23 Expo event Friday, the company confirmed a short-form series featuring the Muppets. The “unscripted” series, titled Muppets Now, will debut in 2020. The variety show, featuring celebrity guests, harkens back to the classic The Muppet Show, which too featured a celebrity guest in each episode. From Disney+’s announcement: “Forty years after leaving the swamp in his big screen debut in The Muppet Movie, Kermit the Frog is heading upstream with Miss Piggy, and the gang, bringing a new kind of mayhem and laughter to Disney+ with their first-ever unscripted short-form series, Muppets Now.“

How does Katzenberg feel about Disney+ stealing Quibi’s thunder with these short-form shows? I am eager to see if this kind of entertainment can actually build an audience. An exciting experiment, even if it feels driven more by market research than creative ingenuity.

I'm not the biggest Muppet fan but I'm glad they haven't been snubbed.

Looks good! The only time I've been disappointed with The Muppets was Wizard of Oz, so I have high hopes for this.

Oh, he does sound pretty different. I guess it must be especially difficult to find replacements for Muppets characters because you’re looking for a performer who can imitate the... physicality of previous Muppets performers as well as the voice. And I imagine that there isn’t a very huge pool of qualified puppeteers to work from either.

They did replace Steve Whitmire with Matt Vogel recently, so it's going to take a little while to get used to. Although it is ironic that Vogel also voiced the Kermit impersonator Constantine in "Muppets Most Wanted."

I think every Muppet is going to sound a little different when a new puppeteer replaces the previous one. Eric Jacobson's Fozzie and Miss Piggy didn't sound exactly like Frank Oz's, when he assumed the roles, but he eventually grew into them.

When watching the trailer yesterday, my husband mentioned that Kermit sounds different. It doesn't bother me; I agree with estefan that it's kind of the nature of changing performers...

It bothers me because the difference is quite noticeable. I find it distracting and it makes it harder for me to accept him as the same character. Usually, when Disney changes voice actors the differences are much more minor and nuanced than this. They definitely dropped the ball here.

Yeah, I don't think Vogel has found his Kermit yet. I remember noticing how off he sounded during the last Disney Sing-a-Long on ABC, and he doesn't sound much better here.

I understand if Steve Whitmore was toxic and they needed a new person in charge of Kermit ASAP, but it should've been easier to find a puppeteer who can do a better Kermit, right?

Even I will admit a little bit of Constantine slips through. But I also want to cut Vogel some slack. It must be strange to suddenly jump into a role where everyone has a specific idea of what that character sounds like, because only two actors have performed him (and the last of which did it for almost thirty years). Although he's not the first Muppet performer to have people say "wow, he sounds different" after inheriting the role. Family Guy even made a joke about "wrong sounding Muppets."
