Lasse Hallstrom is on board to direct a new big-screen version of The Nutcracker.

Disney Studios is developing the project, titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which adapts the classic ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky and the accompanying story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The classic story told of a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When she goes to check on it later that night, the clock strikes midnight, and she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.

I always imagined Disney Animation doing Nutcracker. Too bad it sounds like this is live action

I hope this will be something that feels in tune with the story and not what...whatever the hell that last Nutcracker film was trying to do.

Same. It would have fit in perfectly with Sleeping Beauty with both films using Tchaikovsky's music. I do like however that this film seems to be using elements from the original story rather than going for the more watered-down plot of the ballet.

Now that is awesome. I wonder if this will be modern day, if they are going to have him as the role of Drosselmeyer.

Going by the casting choice for Clara, it looks like they're going by the original version of the story where Clara is an 8 year old girl instead of aging her into a teenager like most adaptations do. I guess we can count on there being no romance between her and the nutcracker now.

First of all, excuse me for my bad english, I'm italian and I don't speak english. I'll try to explain what I want to say.

Jazzflower92,the movie is set in Victorian England in 1850.

JeanGreyForever, Clara isn't 8 year old, she is a teen ager, she is from 13 to 16/17 years old. Actress Mackenzie Foy will turn 16 in November and the movie will be shoot in fall autumn 2016.

I hope there will be romance between Clara and the Nutcracker turned into Prince Nathaniel like Hoffmann and Dumas version of the story. I think Disney movie are better with romance and original fairy tale from both ETA Hoffman and Alexandre Dumas is about a love story so I think and I hope they don't eliminate romance.
Today I don't love this trend for Disney to eliminate romance from their movie and I don't like their idea about "love is something to scrap because is weak etc", "it's better girls don't have love", "girls without love interest means girlpower", I think these ideas are stupid, it's a cliché and a stereotype sensless.

Here the casting call opened in June 2016 for lead role, Clara, and some informations about the movie:
Casting call for lead role in new Disney feature film

Lucy Bevan Casting are looking for the young lead role in Disney's 'The Nutcracker', which is due to shoot in the Autumn 2016. Lasse Hallström ('Chocolat', 'The Hundred-Foot Journey', 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape’)is directing, and Mark Gordon and Lindy Goldstein are producing.

Summary:

Set in the 1850s in Victorian England, the film is a live action retelling of the classic tale based on the story 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King' by E.T.A. Hoffman

Clara (Female) - aged 13-17 years

Lead role. Clever, creative and independent, Clara goes against female societal conventions of the period. At the beginning of the story she is lacking in confidence, struggling to cope with the death of her mother and trying to find her footing in the adult world. Uninterested in beauty and fashion, Clara is most herself when inventing contraptions and going on adventures; she is most comfortable in her own imagination. As she grows through the film we find her to be self sufficient, strong willed, curious, witty, inventive and ultimately confident in herself. She can be any height or ethnicity.

Disneyprincess11, I read Mackenzie Foy will be Clara. I writed in my last post I know this. I writed also Mackenzie Foy will turned 16 in November, so Clara will be a teen ager, not a 8-year old girl.

The casting call I reported above is from May-June 2016, therefore previous to the news about Mackenzie Foy.
From the casting call for "Clara", we can know something about her personality.

Oh you're right. I didn't realize the actress grew up so much. I remember her from Breaking Dawn part 2 where she was a small girl and when her name came up on google, the top few pics where still of her being young so I assumed she hadn't aged much. I'm shocked to realize that she really is a teenager now and much older. I'm personally happier about this, because I prefer the fairytale films to have romance so I hope that remains a point of this film.

I hope this is good. I wouldn't mind a Disney take on "The Nutcracker" to watch at Christmas. The subtitle is a little too "bad Young Adult movie," though.
