The seven-minute short begins with young Sanjay watching cartoons and eating cereal in a bland, beige room as his father jingles a bell, beckoning him to join in meditation. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins daydreaming a kind of ancient, Hindu version of "The Avengers," with the gods appearing like superheroes. As the daydream progresses, the color, light and animation of the film grows increasingly dazzling and cosmic, and Sanjay grows closer to understanding his father's inner world.

Sanjay's Super Team
It's a new short from Pixar. It will be attached to The Good Dinosaur. LA Times has more info on the project.

This looks good not to mention representation of Indian mythology.

I'm very intrigued by this. I hope Pixar is on the rebound with all of its original projects this year.

Re: Sanjay's Super Team
The first stills have been released. Hmm, the design of the kid is both generic and unappealing at the same time. Having a face with enormous eyes and a huge round head on a tiny body is off-putting. The original design in the concept art was actually better. The modifications they did by shrinking his nose and enlarging his eyes were definitely for the worse. Also, the second still looks unfinished like a previz piece. It looks like it hasn't been properly rendered.

Re: Sanjay's Super Team
Those are both final rendered stills.
The second one features a style that the director wanted for this sequence.
I saw the short at Annecy and it was pretty awesome.
Great special effects and story is fun, and bit emotional at the end.
Nice job and it didn't feel any Disney or Pixar to me.

The kid looks more like a character from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
But I'm interested in this short. I love that it centers around an ethnic character and that it explores a different culture.

I imagine that the dream section may be done in a style similar to Feast given the colours/stylisation. Admittedly we need to see the boy from another angle, but his eyes in the first shot indeed make Anna and Elsa's eyes look like mere dots.

This turned out much more generic looking than I was hoping for. The concept art looks so much more interesting. I do like the incredibles credits style tv show he watches though.
And I've never been one to complain about big eyes in CG but wow was that first shot creepy.

I agree. The visuals were definitely watered-down compared to the concept art. Granted, that always seems to be the case when it comes to CG animation.Kyle wrote:This turned out much more generic looking than I was hoping for. The concept art looks so much more interesting.
Me too. That's the only thing that caught my interest in that clip.Kyle wrote:I do like the Incredibles credits style TV show he watches though.

Re: Sanjay's Super Team
The short is coming together in my mind...I didn't have much of a grasp of what the short is about before... Sanjay likes superheroes, but they're all Caucasian. So his Super Team brings together his love of superheroes and his culture. Just a lightbulb moment for me. Obviously that is what the short's intent is, but I had a little epiphany moment after watching the clip. I think that the animation looks really good, better than that initial concept art.

I honestly thought this was just okay but I got what tgey were going for and it was unique.
I enjoyed the stylized animation in the fantasy sequence. I'd like to see more experimental art styles like that in the future from CG animation.

There was some wimpy kid in our audience who kept yelling "Mommy this is too scary, make it stop! Wahhhhh! Too scary!" lol, sheesh!

Re: Sanjay's Super Team
I recently bought the "Art of" book for this short and it's definately worth getting if you enjoyed watching it. I don't know if Pixar has ever made one of these books for their shorts before, but it is well done and it made me appreciate it more.
