Disney Video Essays on YouTube

Post by UmbrellaFish »

So this may sound weird, but I only “discovered” YouTube about a year or two ago. Obviously I knew it as a place to watch funny cat videos, but I didn’t know some of the content there could be as interesting or as well-produced as much of what I have since found. Some of my favorite YouTubers that produce Disney work are Lindsay Ellis, Jenny Nicholson, and Defunctland. I thought we could use this thread to share their old videos and new ones and that of other YouTubers, and share our own takes on their takes.

To christen this thread, I’d like to share James Somerton’s “Evil Queens: Disney’s Queer Cold War” which was uploaded today. It’s an hour-long history about Disney’s depictions of and relations with the LGBT+ community. He gets some minor facts wrong (dates and things) but I think it’s an interesting video which helps articulate some of my own frustration with Disney’s depictions (or lack thereof) of LGBT+ people.

Modern Disney belongs to the gays, any Karen who claims Disney was better when it pandered to broodmares may need to the get dunked.

I have a hard time finding good film and animation channels on YouTube, as I find most to be condescending and a lot of commentary based on assumptions and just descend into insulting the talent involved in making the work they're talking about. The so-called "cartoon community" is especially bad at this. It's a shame there are so few good animation analysts and reviewers on YouTube.

The rare exception is Toonrific Tariq. He actually tries to understand the intentions of the artists and creators when reviewing an animated show or movie and it's a breath of fresh air. He recently made an excellent retrospective on "The Proud Family" and why it's such an important show. He was even able to get Bruce W. Smith to come in and provide further insight into the show's making.

Pan-Pizza is also great. His humour can be a bit adult at times, but it's also clear he's someone who understands all of the hard work that goes into any animated production and instead of blasting the people responsible, he actually shows respect for the artists and seeks to understand why they made certain creative decisions even if he isn't fond of the finished result. He mostly talks about animation in general and doesn't talk about Disney that much, but I still recommend subscribing to him. Here's a recent video he made looking at DreamWorks Animation's hand-drawn movies.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland

From Dreamsounds on YouTube, “Proud Boys and Disney’s Aladdin.”

I had no idea that the alt-right, neo-Fascist group “Proud Boys” got their name from the deleted Aladdin song by Ashman and Menken. :x

Wow.... I would've never guessed that either. I mean, who would? :? So random--and kind of the antithesis of the song's meaning, isn't it?
