Kristen Bell gives us an update on the sequel.
Q: So, what going on with the sequel? We know there's the holiday special but what's happening with the sequel?

Kristen Bell: The sequel is just finished being written and I think we start recording next month.

Q: Oh, really?

Kristen Bell: Yeah.

Q: Do you have any idea what's going to happen?

Kristen Bell: I have a couple of clues as to what's going to happen.

Q: But how does Frozen top Let It Go?

Kristen Bell: Well, nothing will top Let It Go. Ever. It's the most anthemic song I think I've ever heard. And nothing should top it. Even when I hear it, it gives me the tingles. It's a brilliantly written song and it's so perfectly suited for her. I think there are going to be a lot of great songs in the next movie, but I don't know if any of them will top Let It Go.

When I asked if she’d started recording lines for Frozen 2, here’s what she said:

"Not yet. We’re just about to. They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month. The story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out. That’s why it took them so long to even announce that we were doing a second one. Generally when you have a first successful movie you want to make a second one. It took them a while because they wanted to figure out what story they needed to tell and what would be important and engaging and I think they found it."

Here’s what she said when I asked if she had started song work on the sequel:

"No, not yet. We record all the time for different parks or different parks that open overseas, we’ll do a mashup for the rides. So we actually get to go in — Josh and Idina, Jonathan and I — all the time and record new bits of the music. When Epcot center opens we’ll record a bunch of new music. So we have little bits of Frozen in our life at all times, but I’m excited to get started on the new movie."

Q: Have far are you guys in the process? Have you started recording lines?

Kristen Bell: Not yet. We're just about to. They've just written it and they're still doing tweaks. But I think we should be recording this month. The story is great. [...]

Q: Have you started doing song work on it?

Kristen Bell: No, not yet. [...] When Epcot center opens, we'll record a bunch of new music. So, we have little bits of Frozen in our lives at all times. But I'm excited to get started on the new movie.

Q: Okay, I have to throw in a Frozen question… Have you started any work on the sequel at all?

Kristen Bell: We have not. We work consistently to do the openings of [theme] parks or the change of seasons at parks or the ice show or whatever. But they are not rushing the script. They have the luxury to not rush because everyone is going to be excited whether it comes out tomorrow or in five years. They’re making it as perfect as they need it to be and we’re on call to start recording whenever.

Q: Given the Anna/Elsa sister relationship is so important to people, what are you hoping to see in the sequel as far as where they can take that moving forward?

Kristen Bell: My hesitation [answering] is the reason that I voice it and don’t write it. I don’t know. I’m sure that they will have to challenge their relationship in a new way and I’m sure that they will have to have an even bigger event to prove why kindness and familial love is paramount. How they execute that is up to the professionals!

Q: How are things going with Frozen 2? Back in May, you told one of my colleagues that you were about to start recording dialogue for the sequel. Have you done a lot of that recording, since then?

Kristen Bell: We haven’t, actually. I thought we were about to start recording, but I was mistaken. So, we haven’t begun yet. They’re putting the finishing touches on the script. We record, as those characters, often. At the change of season at the parks, whether it’s for Disneyland, Epcot, or when Japan opens, we will record new voices for our characters, but we actually haven’t started recording for the second Frozen.

Okay, so the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has become popular recently. There was a time when I would've said they'd never do that, but they've already had a lesbian storyline in "Once Upon a Time," so who knows?

I still doubt they'd do anything with that. If anything, I thought Elsa was a stand-out because she was a female character who was both powerful and not bogged down in the typical princess romance conventions.

It appears the sequel is now a long way off:

Possibly hashing out story issues. I'd rather have it sooner, but maybe it needs the work, who knows.

I wonder if Frozen Fever will have faded by then.

Is Nov. 2020 the next slot reserved for Disney Animation after Gigantic? That's the only one that article mentions, but I thought they had Nov. 2019 as well? It's hard to keep track though.

Frozen still has the TV special scheduled for next year. I really don't see the fever dying down much before the sequel comes.

I'm hoping that this forced sequel will just quietly die off in due time after Disney finds successes elsewhere. I love Frozen to death but TV specials should be as far as they're allowed to milk it.

But of course that's not going to happen, they're going to go through with it no matter what.

Yeah, I agree. I mean, I wouldn't have even been against a sequel had it just gone away and they came back in 5 years to do one, but considering all we've gotten and are still going to get, it takes the fun out of it.

I know Frozen is not popular on this board, but a sequel would not be "too much" for this film. It's been three years since it was released and the only meaningful thing that's happened with the property is a short.

Yeah, we can't have a Frozen sequel but this is OK

Well, to be fair, virtually nobody around here or even the most devoted of Pixar fanboys think those are okay either...

I've pretty much warmed up to the idea of a sequel to Frozen and am ultimately looking forward to it, but it does still kinda feel weird to know that we're actually getting a 'canon' sequel to a Disney fairytale musical.

If it were a sequel that came to them naturally like The Incredibles 2, then sure, that's just fine. But this one's ordered for the money and Lee/Buck/WDAS are taking their sweet time trying to figure out how to reopen a closed book.

Id like one if it fills in much needed missing characterization/backstory for Elsa, Kristoff and Hans(yes he still needs lots of explaining) that was left out of the first film to make more room for snowman hi-jinks.
But if its just gonna be a 90 minute Frozen Fever, no thanks.

Are you kidding me? Every CGI film Disney's made was created with sequels in mind. The transition to 3D was largely motivated by Disney's desire to have their own cash cows like Dreamworks, and it's what they would've done with Pixar films years ago if Pixar hadn't stood in the way (although it's clear at this point that Pixar cashed in their standards a while back). Whether or not the film's put into creation for money implies nothing about what the quality of the finished product will be.

Well, they wouldn't make a sequel to please people who were unsatisfied with the first film, so don't hold your breath. *shrug*

I think Hans has served his purpose. His cameo in Frozen Fever was funny, but I think he should be left out of the sequel entirely.

And Elsa may have had relatively limited screentime, but I thought she received a pretty good arc overall. Though her popularity likely ensures that she will get more focus this time around.

Well, despite that I've gladely ranted about Elsa's limited screentime and how it hampered her characterization (and her faults overall), it's true that she had a pretty good arc of her own. And most likely she'll receive more screentime in the sequel.

Although this was already known, Kristen Bell has confirmed that the sequel will be released in 2019. The release date reserved by Disney is November 27, 2019.

So Toy Story 4 & Frozen 2 in June/Thanksgiving 2019. Disney could make over 2 billion $$$ on both those features alone. That could break the animation box office. Plus rivals Dragons 3 & The Lego Movie 2?! Records will be broke!
