The Nut Job 2 has this in the bag.

I'm thinking it'll be Finding Dory easily, unless Zootopia turns out better than it sounds and Disney continues to receive positive feedback with BH6. HTTYD3 will depend on reactions to HTTYD2, which somehow I'm expecting won't be as positive as they were to the first one for some reason (and, no, it's not Lady Cluck that makes me feel that way...).

Is Giants still set for 2016? I can't even keep up with the schedule anymore.

Anyway, from the list, I'm most optimistic about Giants and HTTYD3 (well, if the second one is good). Popye sounds like a bad idea, but I'm cautiously optimistic due to Genndy Tartakovsky's involvement. And I've never been as enamoured with Finding Nemo as most people (don't get me wrong, I do think it's a good film), but I actually think Dory's story could have some potential. It can't be worse than Cars 2 or Monsters University, right?

Zootopia: An animal movie that could have failed easily, but actually is another great Disney film that’s really deep about fighting racism and prejudice

Finding Dory: The long-awaited sequel to Finding Nemo and if it’s as good as the last one, will have lots of emotion, comedy, and heart.

Moana: First Disney Princess Polynesian movie with Polynesian myth & culture, with gorgeous music, a strong heroine, no love story, and breathtaking visuals and animation.

My Life as a Zucchini won this year's top prize, the Cristal for a Feature Film as well as the Audience Award. The Girl Without Hands won the Jury Distinction. The Girl Without Hands was picked up for U.S. distribution by GKids which will be submitting it for Oscar consideration in 2017.

I guess this means Zootopia and Moana have no chance. I guess it's a good thing if it keeps Zootopia from winning, since Moana's probably already got the shaft.

I'm surprised nothing from the '50s-'60s got anything. Also giving huge side-eye at trash like BH6 being alongside the others.

I don't get it. Why is The Jungle Book suddenly a top pick? And why does that make Zootopia (or any other potentially good animated film that's coming out later in the year) less likely of a contender? I mean, The Jungle Book has some stunning animation, but The Academy has already proven time and time again that they don't judge the Animation category on a technical level. A lot of voters just pick the "safest" choice that will appeal to everyone, and The Jungle Book, as critically-praised as it is, does not carry as much of an emotional-impact as Zootopia. All of the Oscar-winning Pixar films prove that, no matter what kind of beautiful masterpiece of an arthouse animated film you make, voters seem to like emotionally-effective morals...especially if those morals are relevant to modern-day issues (and earn about a billion dollars in the box office).
Also I just really like Zootopia and I genuinely think it's the best Disney Animation movie in a long time so I wouldn't mind it winning.*cough*

Plus, I think that Moana will probably get Best Original Song. There will probably be a push to give Lin-Manuel Miranda his EGOT, so that's one potential win to add to the WDAS list.

Jungle Book winning seems like a stretch. The backlash would be strong. I don't even know about a nomination at this point. Its qualifications are dubious and Disney campaigning for it would be counterproductive since they seem to own the category this year with three other possible contenders.

I'll believe it when I see it or if buzz starts to build closer to awards season, which I highly doubt. It's just buzz worthy at the moment.

Zootopia remains the favorite until we see how Finding Dory and Moana are received, and it would be a very worthy winner though I hope Moana is even better. I'm still extremely skeptical about Finding Dory's quality. Nothing from the other studios stands out as a contender right now to be honest :/

The only live-action elements in The Jungle Book are Mowgli and his father. Everything else in the film is animated, so it would qualify for the Best Animated Feature category, were Disney to submit it.

However, I don't think they will for a number of reasons. First, the studio and the filmmaking team keep calling it a live-action film, so they don't consider it animation in the first place. Secondly, they already have three major Animated Feature contenders and will probably be campaigning hard to get them all their slots as the category has been very competitive in recent years and the animation branch seems to take more of a liking towards smaller animated films over the big studio fare these days.

Thirdly, The Jungle Book is already being seen as a frontrunner in the visual effects category. To date, The Nightmare Before Christmas is the only fully animated film to receive a nomination in that category and that was before the Best Animated Feature category existed. Disney's thinking is probably that if they were to submit Jungle Book for Animated Feature, that would affect its chances in score a visual effects nod.

I don't know. Generally animated films aren't seen as being as "good" as regular films by the Oscar voters, which is why I could see them voting for TJB. Sort of like Caitlyn Jenner winning the Woman of the Year award; even in their own category, the animated films get shafted for a live-action film.

Yeah, I don't see Disney submitting it for the category, though I suppose it's possible. People weren't really talking about this sort of thing when Gravity came out though, and that film was virtually completely animated aside from the two human characters as well, much in the same way as The Jungle Book. In fact, I remember reading an interview where Alfonso Cuaron said that film was animated in its entirety before they got the actors in there. Of course, that didn't really have fully animated characters like the animals in TJB, so I guess that could be the difference. But again, Disney themselves seem to consider this a 'live-action' film.

If it were submitted and nominated, though, I don't see it necessarily being the front-runner. As well-received as TJB was, Zootopia had the better reception. Plus, it doesn't really fit the pre-conceived notion of what an animated film is, and the Academy is all about conventions and being "safe," and a Pixar or WDAS film would be the obvious choice in that case.

La tortue rogue (The Red Turtle) was honored at the Cannes Film Festival and received rave reviews. I can definitely see it getting a nomination.

The dialogue-less film follows the major life stages of a castaway on a deserted tropical island populated by turtles, crabs and birds.

Switzerland has selected My Life as a Zucchini as its as its foreign-language Oscar entry. This marks the 18th animated film to be chosen by a country as its foreign-language candidate for the Oscars. Update: The film advanced to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category.

BAFTA is tweaking its rules in the Best Animated Feature category, so we may get five nominees this year instead of the usual three.

In the animated film section, previously limited to three nominations, the committee will have the option of extending the number to five. "Sometimes entrants don't submit their films because they know there's only three nominations, so we want to make sure there's as wider number of entrants as possible," BAFTA's head of awards Emma Baehr tells THR.
