Jennifer Lee Wants Next Project to Be Sci-fi Blockbuster

Looking forward, Lee has her sights set on one barrier yet to be broken: "I would love to be the first female director to do a giant sci-fi movie. I have a real love of sci-fi. A pretty obsessive love of sci-fi, actually."

Q: Are there any pet projects or dream stories that you want to bring to life?

Jennifer Lee: I do have a need for socially conscious films. I respond to those. But my slight obsession is science fiction. Science fiction, to do it well, is one of the hardest things. I don't know if I'm ready, and I only want to do it when I can do it exactly right.

Next up: Lee’s eager to craft something wholly original, leaning toward the sci-fi genre she adores (“Not just okay sci-fi—I want to do something amazing!”) and maybe live action (“Disney’s a big place, so there may be opportunities”). “It’s that feeling of the blank page,” she says, “and knowing, in a wonderful way, I can do anything right now.”

Maybe she could help with the story problems in that teen space race movie that recently got shelved. Unless she means live action sci-fi, in which case...

Shoot for the stars, Ms. Lee.

I absolutely adore Frozen but I hope if they go in this direction they meticulously study Atlantis and Treasure Planet and use them as examples of how not to make a Disney Sci-fi adventure. I know they have their fans but I would hate to have another dry and boring animated feature with good intentions but nothing all that fun or interesting.

Does Lee mean she'd like to do a sci-fi film for a DAC or for a personal project?

Because if it's the former, I'm all for it. Atlantis and Treasure Planet were both imperfect films, but there's still plenty of good in them, as well as a plethora of potential for a good sci-fi animated Disney film if Lee and the rest of the studio try to drop what didn't work for them. I know some fans want Disney to stay in the realms of fairy tales, but there's no reason they can't branch out some more.

You don't consider Atlantis and Treasure Planet Steampunk?

I'd like more Disney films that aren't about princesses or fairy tales, too. Overusing the same genre can get boring.

eh... I guess they have some aspects of it, but I want something thats more victorian era themed. TP had more 16th/17th century influences & Atlantis spends most of the movie with the Atlantean's culture...
