Cruella (Live-Action)
Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Went and saw it today in the theater. It was so much fun. Emma Stone was freaking amazing, so was Emma Thompson. The soundtrack was great as well, with lots and lots of songs from the 60s and 70s. The costumes were absolutely amazing...

I doubt she'll go through with it. She's not going to jeopardize the sequel getting canceled and missing out on future earnings.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Do it, Stone, do it. Disney's trying to harm the theater business altogether, imo, and they need the pushback. And if it affects how much they get paid, I would sue myself. I think there were grumblings that PIXAR hasn't liked their movies being made streaming exclusive at all, but they're not able to do anything about it.Sotiris wrote:I doubt she'll go through with it. (That said, I personally doubt Cruella would've done much better even if it hadn't been released on Disney+ and the pandemic hadn't been hindering everything.)

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Cruella is honestly doing better than I expected, considering it was released in this pandemic environment and made available at home. It's currently at $85 million domestic and $221 million worldwide, which is one of the better numbers of the summer films so far. Its holds have also been impressive. While most of the big pandemic summer releases (F9, Black Widow, A Quiet Place Part II, In the Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy) had massive drops on their second weekends, Cruella only fell 48%. The first time it dropped over 50% was on its eighth weekend.
Obviously, Cruella would have performed better with no pandemic worries and with no Premier Access, but considering the asterisks attached and how others movies are being affected by COVID and simultaneous releases, I would consider its performance a win.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Finally saw this last night. I understand why some people like it so much, although I'm still mystified at it's a 97% on RottenTomatoes--I could see somewhere in the 87-94% area, but not quite that much. I feel like Disney decided to stuff the box a bit with Cruella's reviews after Mulan 2020 was taken down by audience reviews.
It is a fun film if I completely separate it from the connection to Cruella altogether. It's connection to the character is very superficial; sort of like those themed baking shows, it's just a jumping off point. I actually think the worst parts of the film are when Emma Stone is talking to Horace and Jasper as "Cruella," but it works as some kind of character she's putting on for Emma Thompson's character. I hate the cane they gave her. You can see Stone fidgeting at moments like she needs a prop to fiddle with as she's chewing the scenery; too bad she couldn't have, you know, smoked cigarettes to fill that void. A great deal of this felt like Devil Wears Prada spliced with Descendants; better-made and better-acted than a DCOM, but with a story that still feels like one. I honestly felt Stone was the weakest part of this; what I enjoyed were the Baroness, Horace, Jasper, Artie. The dogs were cute and I liked how the song at the end was a re-writing of "Cruella de Vil."

I updated this post from almost a year ago a couple of weeks back, but didn't really know where to post it. I thought it would be good for an anniversary re-visit, to update Mulan's score (it dropped another point since the last time I looked at it) as well as Cruella's.

Thanks for putting this list together. It's interesting to see that the biggest gap between audiences and critics is for Aladdin, The Lion King, and Maleficent 2.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Guess I’m more on the critics side of things. Those audience ratings for Maleficent and Cruella are insane. What movies did they see?
Also Lion King … no wonder Disney has no issues cranking out these unneeded remakes without bothering to make them watchable.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Yeah, back when I first made that list in the Mulan 2020 thread, I theorized that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil's ratings were so high because it was a sequel. In other words, only the viewers who enjoyed the first one watched the second one, meaning they were more likely to rate it highly? That explanation doesn't fit for Cruella though. I mean, I can believe Cruella would have a fairly high rating--it was a fun time even if it wasn't great and I wish it was more like the character it was based on--I just don't think it should've been nearly 100%. That doesn't even feel real.
I personally didn't mind TLK as much as most here once I watched it, although it did imitate farther than I would have liked. Timon and Pumbaa were much cuter than in the animated film, to me at least.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
They must grade on a curve.
Listening to most often lately:
Ariana Grande ~ "we can't be friends (wait for your love)"
Ariana Grande ~ "imperfect for you"
Kacey Musgraves ~ "The Architect"
Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Interesting. I never pay any attention to critics, to be honest. Mainly because they think that they're some sort of experts when it comes to movies, when in reality, they're just expressing their opinions. But their arrogance in stating these opinions make me totally ignore them.Disney's Divinity wrote:I updated this post from almost a year ago a couple of weeks back, but didn't really know where to post it. I thought it would be good for an anniversary re-visit, to update Mulan's score (it dropped another point since the last time I looked at it) as well as Cruella's.

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Cinemascores are taken from audiences who are leaving some of the very first showings of a movie, hence they are pre-disposed to liking the movie. The way they are asked to grade the movie is "did this movie meet your expectations?" rather than "was it good?" which is kind of an important distinction. That would be why the cinemascores trend high. When a movie gets anything below an A-, you can be pretty sure it will either be extremely divisive or unliked by audiences.
As far as critics, while I can respect not necessarily basing your habits off of their opinions, they technically *are* film experts, as it is their job to review movies, and they have seen the vast majority of releases. That would qualify them as much as anyone as an "expert." I also wouldn't call them arrogant for stating their opinion, as they are paid to do so. They are no more arrogant than a random person on a message board stating their opinion on a movie

Re: Cruella (Live-Action)
Like lord-of-sith said (just as I was typing this, lol), it should be noted that CinemaScore results usually end up being based around whether they meet audience expectations, specially the opening night crowd who are most excited to see the movie. If the film delivers exactly as promised, it will get a high grade. Family films traditionally score high CinemaScore grades, hence why the Disney remakes almost all have As. Every single theatrical Pixar film has landed in the As. A family film has to really disappoint the audience to get below an A-. Gnomeo & Juliet and Sherlock Gnomes got a B+. A Wrinkle in Time and The Emoji Movie got Bs. Norm of the North got a B-. Curiously, despite being critically acclaimed and winning the Oscar, Rango only got a C+.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland
