Just months after Lucasfilm announced the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Disney has put the new animated series Star Wars Rebels into production. The new franchise will premiere with a one-hour Disney Channel special in fall 2014, followed by a series on Disney XD.

Star Wars Rebels will focus on events that span between Episode III and IV of the film franchise — a two-decade era that Lucasfilm points out has not been explored before on screen. Disney is keeping details a "closely guarded secret," but offers this tease: "Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape."

Many of the creative minds behind Clone Wars are now working on the new series, including executive producer Dave Filoni, who had been Clone Wars' supervising director since its 2008 launch. Other executive producers include Simon Kinberg (X-Men First Class), who is writing the first episode and is also involved with the upcoming new Star Wars films, and animation vet Greg Weisman (Young Justice).

Lucasfilm Animation is producing Star Wars Rebels and will offer a first sneak peek at the Star Wars Celebration Europe in Germany this July.

"I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Disney's $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm last fall sealed the fate of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which aired on rival conglomerate Time Warner's Cartoon Network. In March, Lucasfilm said in a statement that it had decided "to pursue a new direction in animated programming," which included the cancellation of Clone Wars after five seasons and the postponement of Star Wars' comedic Detours from the Robot Chicken team.

Not a Star Wars fan but Greg Weisman? I'm in.

Lets hope this show makes it past season two because Weisman always seems to run into executive meddling in his shows.

May 29, 2013 is the premier of the new "Yoda Chronicles" on Cartoon Network. Looks really good from the teasers they have been running. I am pretty pissed about "Star Wars Clone Wars" not being finished, but will take "Yoda Chronicles" with a grain of salt and hope for something as good if not better.

I didn't know that there was going to be a Yoda Cartoon until you just said that. Thanks for saying that and I'll make sure to DVR it. I haven't been watching Cartoon Network as much since most of the shows I did watch on there are no more I.E. Clone Wars, Young Justice, and Scooby Doo Mystery Inc.

Clone Wars was not finished but Ahsoka's story was concluded. It would have been great to have more but I can live with where they left off. The show really started with her introduction and ended with her departure.

This Rebels show, Maybe they should rename it 'Rebellion'?, sounds like it could be really good.

That awesome concept art of Alderaan with those mountain boulders comes straight out of the awesome and talented late Ralph McQuarrie. One of my all time favorite and influential artist ever.

Here's his original:

God he was so awesome. You should see his concepts art for some of the others like Coruscent (which is ten times better than the one we go in "shitquels") or Tatoonie.

A Teaser (well rather a teen tiny one in my opinion)

Don't know how many others are watching this series, but I am one that has followed this since its inception and announcement that it would make its debut in October of this year.

The one-hour debut on October 6 was then followed by the series premiere on October 13. We are now into our fifth week and, so far, the episodes have introduced us to a lot of different characters, and also had a cameo from R2-D2 and C3PO in the second episode.

Hope their are others who are watching because I would like this one to stick around for a while.

The series has been mostly enjoyable so far. With people like Greg Weisman from Gargoyles and Spectacular Spider-man in the helm (sadly he's only contributing story for Season 1; he can't seem to break his 2-season curse), one can see the story progressing bit by bit as we slowly learn more about the characters and their quirks, not to mention them developing over time.

The plot, albeit rather comedic (and for understandable reasons) has had a few darker moments which have helped balance things out, and the Inquisitor and the Agent do make their presence known in a suitably sinister way compared to the Imperial mooks who look rather incompetent (perhaps too much so) in comparison. After all, this is supposed to be an era where the Empire is winning and any rebel cells are fighting a losing battle, and yet somehow the Ghost crew seems to outsmart the Stormtroopers at every turn and thus diminishes the Empire as a whole. We've seen Stormtroopers being effective before in, say, Episode 4 (massacring Jawas, and Luke's aunt and uncle, as well as deliberately letting the Rebels escape from the Death Star so they'd locate the hidden base), so it would be nice if we did get a feeling of dread from these soldiers too from time to time and not make them seem like buffoons compared to the Ghost crew.

What kind of bugs me is that Stormtrooper deaths are played for laughs, which is creepy considering how they're still people behind those helmets, and yet even Ezra, our hero, doesn't mind massacring them by the dozen. But considering the show is aiming at a younger target audience who may not realize these implications, this is moral dissonance I'll just have to tolerate, I suppose.

The cast has potential, and I enjoy their chemistry and acting. As expected of a writing team which has Greg Weisman, we've seen gradual character development over even "standalone" episodes, thus showing progression and changes in character dynamics. I hope the trend continues because so far it looks promising. I've enjoyed the cameos of OT and PT characters we've seen so far, and I was quite glad to see them adding a scene between Vader and the Inquisitor in a special aired version of the pilot "movie" (which one can find in Youtube).

The animation itself is quite good with very smooth movements and body language although it took me a while to get used to this different art style after having watched The Clone Wars. I love how many of the background shots evoke Ralph McQuarrie's delightful drawings for the Original Trilogy and how the colors and technology are close to the OT era yet still have some remnants of Prequel Trilogy era left here and there.

The music by Kevin Kiner is decent despite being synth-based. However, at times I feel he references the Original Trilogy's themes a bit too much out of context in an attempt to tie Rebels and OT era together; an understandable strategy to appease fans but which creates a thematic dissonance when he uses specific character themes from OT for Rebel series characters in this "prequel" setting.

All in all, Rebels is definitely a series I'll be watching with great interest. It still seems to struggle a bit to find its footing, but I assume it'll do like The Clone Wars did and become steady by the season finale and onwards to Season 2. :)

With the sixth epsiode coming next week I though it was time to voice are choice on the subject of the new Star Wars Rebels television show, airing on Monday nights at 9 pm Eastern on Disney XD Channel.

I am really liking the show. The lead character, Ezra, is funny, smart, and an adventurer at heart.

The shows storyline is telling a great story so far. It all takes place in the period of time between the Star Wars movies number three and number four.

It was fun to see C3PO and R2D2 in a cameo role in the second episode.

Any one else out there who watches this show? Share with us what you think of Star Wars Rebels.

It's awesome! If this was on after I had seen the original movie when I was a kid, my head would have exploded! The episode with the 'kidnapped' Jedi Master was extremely dark. Don't have time to reply too much right now, but I'm really loving it so far.
