Films that COULD'VE won Best Animated Feature (before 2001)

Post by toonaspie »

So I had an idea for a fun project but I know there's no way I could do this by myself.

We all know that the Best Animated Feature oscar category didnt come into play until 2001. By then it was practically too late for Disney 2D animated as things started to...well you know.

But I thought it would fun to list all the animated feature films that BEFORE 2001 would've been nominated had the Best Animated Feature category was created sooner. Then pick out which film would've most likely won it.

I know there are some cases where Disney would not have won but for the most part every single Disney 2D film prior to 2001 would've likely been nominated at the very least.

And very likely since Beauty and the Beast was the only 2D animated film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar, it probably would've won the Best Animated Feature if there was one in 1991-92.

Thoughts?

Well definitely Aladdin and The Lion King would've been nominated and they would've won the award too. If there was more competition in the field of animation than just Don Bluth, those two movies would probably have that title today.

Toy Story 2 would've gotten the 2000, as well as a nod for Tarzan.

Honestly, Disney would have won practically every year because during that time period, they were pretty much the only company making animated films, and usually the best quality ones, too...

I think it's probably easier to list the times when Disney would have lost

1988 - Oliver & Company vs. Grave of the Fireflies vs. My Neighbour Totoro vs. Akira

1997 - Hercules vs. Anastasia vs. Princess Mononoke vs. Perfect Blue

Those two are definite losses. There are other times that they would have possibly lost but unlikely.

What I think would have been nominated with a star next to what would have won:

2000:
Chicken Run*
The Emperor's New Groove
Fantasia 2000

1999:
The Iron Giant
Princess Mononoke
South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut
Toy Story 2*
Tarzan

1998:
A Bug's Life
Mulan
The Prince of Egypt*

1997:
Anastasia
Cats Don't Dance
Hercules*

1996:
Ghost in the Shell
The Hunchback of Notre Dame*
James and the Giant Peach

1995:
A Goofy Movie
Pocahontas
Toy Story*

1994:
The Lion King*
The Pagemaster
Thumbelina

1993:
The Nightmare Before Christmas*
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
My Neighbour Totoro

1992:
Aladdin*
Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland
Bebe's Kids

1991:
Beauty and the Beast*
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West
Fist of the Northstar

1990:
The Rescuers Down Under*
DuckTales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp
The Nutcracker Prince

1989:
The Little Mermaid*
Akira
All Dogs Go to Heaven

1988:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit* (Looney Tunes: Back in Action and Stuart Little 2 were eligible, so this one definitely would be)
The Land Before Time
Oliver & Company

1987:
The Brave Little Toaster*
Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night
The Chipmunk Adventure

1986:
An American Tail*
The Great Mouse Detective
Warriors of the Wind (aka Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind)

I have no idea about rules but do we take them from the US release date or first release date (in the case of Japanese animated films?)

And I'd probably say if Akira was counted as 1989 then it would win over The Little Mermaid.

Academy rules state that a film is eligible by year it's released in a Los Angeles cinema. Hence, why Spirited Away won in 2002 and not 2001.

Ok, in that case I'd say 1989 goes to Akira and 1999 to Princess Mononoke.

I think Princess Mononoke was Japan's Foreign Language Film entry for 1998, so it might not have been eligible for Animated Feature if it was in the running the year before.

Also, I think The Swan Princess would have been nominated in 1994 instead of Thumbelina.

What about Grave of the Fireflies instead of The Pagemaster, Pooh's Grand Adventure instead of Cats Don't Dance and A Monkey's Tale instead of South Park. I'd probably say that Ghost in the Shell would win over Hunchback. I've never seen the altered Warriors of the Wind version but Nausicaa would certainly win over An American Tail.

2000: Howl's Moving Castle
Overall, storywise and animation, this is a superior film to the rest.

1999: The Iron Giant
I think this would have won. Likely surprising many, especially those who never saw it. It is really a fantastic story. UNLESS, Princess Mononoke was nominated that year.

1998: The Prince of Egypt
Music, the animation style, and of course the story would have likely helped this one to win

1997: Anastasia
I think mostly because of the music. Once Upon the December hands down is one of the most beautiful pieces of music to come from an animated movie for a long time. I always felt that song deserved the Oscar over Titanic's theme. Again, if Princess Mononoke was nominated that year, that would all go out the window.

1996:The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Music and the story would see this one win. A lot of drama for a Disney picture

1995: Toy Story
At the time, it was a technical masterpiece, but mostly, it was a fantastic story and the voice work was so perfect.

1994: The Lion King
Nuff said.

1993: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Visually stunning, the music is fantastic, the story is very original, I would bet it would have won

1992: Aladdin
Like Lion King

1991: Beauty and the Beast
Considering this was nominated for Best Picture, it certainly would have won.

1990: The Rescuers Down Under
Marahute is a gorgeous piece of animation. McLeach is a fantastic and very underrated villain. The story was great.

1989: The Little Mermaid
I think Kiki might give Ariel a run for her money, but in the end, Ariel would come out on top.

1988: The Land Before Time vs. My Neighbor Totoro
Seriously, can't decide which of these WOULD win. I would want to see LBT win though

1987: The Brave LIttle Toaster
The music is great as is the story, I think it would win.

1986: An American Tail
The music of course. The family drama and story of immigrant mice, as a metaphor for what real immigrants went through, I am sure it would have won

1985: The Black Cauldron
The others seemed more like fluff. I would bet this would be the winner

Howl's Moving Castle premiered in 2004  Since it's LA then Princess Mononoke would be 1999. I'd also see Akira for 1989, Kiki wouldn't be eligible I don't think.

I'm going by Amy's list + adding a few of my own. The bolded titles are my choices for the winning movies. Also, before 1995, I doubt there'd be enough (good) movies to even make the nominees list, but I'll just play along.

2000:
- Chicken Run
- Dinosaur
- The Emperor's New Groove
- The Road to El Dorado
- Titan A.E.

1999:
- Fantasia 2000
- The Iron Giant
- South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
- Tarzan
- Toy Story 2

1999 was exceptionally strong year for movies, both live-action and animated. So, even though "The Iron Giant" is a clear winner here, I wouldn't be disappointed if any of the other four took the award.

1998:
- Antz
- A Bug's Life
- Kirikou and the Sorceress
- Mulan
- The Prince of Egypt

1997:
- Anastasia
- Hercules
- Princess Mononoke

1996:
- Beavis and Butt-head Do America
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- James and the Giant Peach

1995:
- Ghost in the Shell
- Pocahontas
- Toy Story

1994:
- The Lion King
- The Pagemaster
- The Swan Princess

1993:
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story

1992:
- Aladdin
- FernGully: The Last Rainforest
- Porco Rosso

1991:
- An American Tail: Fievel Goes West
- Beauty and the Beast
- Only Yesterday

1990:
- DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp
- Jetsons: The Movie
- The Rescuers Down Under

1989:
- All Dogs Go to Heaven
- Kiki's Delivery Service
- The Little Mermaid

1988:
- Akira
- Grave of the Fireflies
- The Land Before Time
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit

1987:
- The Brave Little Toaster
- The Chipmunk Adventure
- Pinocchio and the Emperor of The Night

1986:
- An American Tail
- Laputa: Castle in the Sky
- The Great Mouse Detective

1985:
- The Black Cauldron
- The Care Bears Movie
- The Secret of the Sword 8)

Pooh's Grand Adventure was DTV film, hence it wouldn't be up for anything!

I don't think Brave Little Toaster or some of the Japanese ones mentioned would qualify per the Academy rules. Of course, if the category existed, maybe these films would have found it easier to secure US theatrical distribution.
