Wait, Marky, I'm not sure, are you trying to say that the new version looks like a flat, generic cartoon? Maybe you should repost the same images again.

Maybe I should......;)

Because some people seem to have gone blind or at least didn't take the time to watch the images properly.

Ps. drfsupercenter, thanks for your great posts, you understand what it's about. It's nice to see other people with respect for the classics.

Just to mess with everyone's head, here are two caps from the DVD.

I didn't take that screencap.

But what's the difference? It's only a little darker.
You always have little changes in shade like that on different monitors.
It doesn't change the flat and dead look though.

Exactly!!!! Especially her hair. And the button on the Beasts chest. Like it comes right out of a Ducktales episode, or some cheap sequel.
I'm glad you finally see it.

I thought it was Beast_Enchantment. However did it, didn't do it as good as magicalscreencaps.com. The image with Belle on top was obviously taken with some sort of brightened source on and goes to show that this whole thread has been using worthless caps from both the new DVD and old laserdisc to prove nothing besides the fact that no one seems to take good caps of source images printed on discs.

If anyone desperately want's darker images, I suggest your just turn down the brightness of your monitor, that's what I did for the Belle of my last post and it looked just as "good" as the laserdisc cap.

You guys don't know anything about sarcasm, that's why you guys didn't understand my joke :)
Of course I know that you don't agree with me about the screenshot.
But the embarrassing thing is that you really mean it.........

Ps, Beast_enchantment, thanks for the message!
I can't send pm's on this site, but can you send me your email?

And it's even more embarrassing that you really mean it's about lightness/darkness too.........and that you think it even comes close to the feeling of the laserdisc version......

Right... I generally don't trust *any* screencaps sites as God knows what kind of software they used.

I have both the DVD and a digital version of the laserdisc... I'll take some frickin screenshots myself so we can get over this "somebody intentionally made them look bad to prove a point" theory.

@Marky, yeah I get it... I bet if Disney did what they did to BatB to Snow White or Pinocchio everyone would be pissy about it. Just for some reason it's perfectly OK for this film.
I'm waiting to see what they do do Pinocchio for the Blu-Ray treatment... I wouldn't be surprised if something similar to this happens due to them restoring the living daylights out of it.

Nobody is saying that, only I'm saying no one has decent enough caping software to properly compare either image.

As for the second point, the filmmakers of BatB approved. Walt can't say anything about these new transfers. They could. They said they liked it. That's why it's "OK" for this film (or Lion King or Aladdin or Pocahontas for that matter) because the directors themselves said it's OK. Any disagreeing is just meaningless fan whining.

Wait, let's all post more screencaps, then repeat how garish the colors look now, then do it again. Surely that will convert the non-believers.

Maybe, to take this argument anywhere, We should post caps of Aladdin and Lion King comparing THEIR LDs with THEIR DVDs.

P.S, anyone got Lion King or Aladdin Laserdiscs for legitimacy?

I have good capping software. Either I can use VLC, which saves uncompressed PNG frames... or I can just open the DVD in VirtualDub and export it as a bitmap from there. (Again, without compression or changing anything)

I guess it still goes against the whole point of preserving the OTV. The original colors/whatever is what MADE it a classic... and all they're doing is changing it. It's like when they release Toy Story in 3D... it may be cool, but it's not the original. I'm fine with them making "special editions" as long as they still keep the original available.

Look at Stephen Spielberg... he seems to be very passionate about preserving his films *the way they were in theaters*. He used the same digital restoration service as George Lucas, but yet nobody's complaining about Indiana Jones. And notice how the sets of Close Encounters, E.T., etc have both the special editions and the OTV restored. He obviously gets what it means to preserve a film.

Both. Well, DVD transfers of them, for that matter. (I don't have a laserdisc player, but one of my friends who's helping with the Unvaulted project does - and he gives me all his recorded LD material)

Okay, guys, to settle this once and for all, I have just returned from breaking into the Disney Vault. I had to bribe the guy guarding the entrance with half a thing of Tic Tacs, but I think it was worth it. After a quick chat with Uncle Remus, I ventured into the depths and found the actual digital copy of "Beauty and the Beast", made a screencap, and flew back to Boston. I'm pleased to present definitively what this classic film should look like:

Image

Wow, were you all way off or what?

Also, the hard drive that had the movie on it had a little photo of Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, and Don Hahn taped to it with all of them giving the thumbs up and okay signs, so I think that we can say with all seriousness that this is the way they want the film to be seen.

 By "breaking into the vaults", do you mean you got the Itunes download, or is this the film negative when it's NOT projected?

No wait, you said it was on a hard drive, so scratch that last bit. For that matter, It look REALLY cartoony. And I wasn't even criticising the PE.
