FROM RE-RELEASE, WALT DISNEY PRESSBOOKS...

"Bambi" 1957 Re-Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR! PLEASE NOTE!

BEST PROJECTION RESULTS ARE OBTAINED BY USING THE FOLLOWING ASPECT RATIOS IN THE PRESENTATION OF WALT DISNEY'S "BAMBI"

FROM: 1.33 to 1
TO: 1.66 to 1

WARNING! Please do not go beyond 1.66 to 1 aspect ratio or you will lose top and bottom of picture."

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for "Bambi" when it premiered in 1942 was 1.33:1. Therefore the 1.66:1 matting, in some venues, of this 1957 re-release is another example of the critically frowned upon theatrical re-releases of Disney films in improper aspect ratios.)

"Peter Pan" 1958 Re-Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR PLEASE NOTE

For Best Projection Results In The Presentation of "Peter Pan" Use Aspect Ratio 1:75 to 1"

(NOTE: The premiere of "Peter Pan" was in 1953, just prior to the release of the film "Shane" which introduced the practice of matting films to a widescreen aspect ratio. Therefore it is impossible for the premiere of "Peter Pan" to have been matted. One would include this presentation in the critically frowned upon re-release of Disney animated films with improper framing, however Walt himself was still alive and therefore one has to pause and wonder if he would prefer a widescreen version of the film. Either way, the original theatrical aspect ratio is 1.33:1 and is available on all the DVD releases of this title.)

"Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" 1958 Re-Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR...PLEASE NOTE

For Best Projection Results In The Presentation Of "Snow White" Use Aspect Ratio 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for "Snow White" when it premiered in 1937 was 1.33:1. Therefore the 1.75:1 matting of this 1958 re-release is another example of the critically frowned upon theatrical re-releases of Disney films in improper aspect ratios.)

"Swiss Family Robinson" 1968 Re-Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR...PLEASE NOTE!

RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS AND 8 MINUTES

For top projection results do not exceed ASPECT RATIO 2:35 TO 1"

(NOTE: This matches the original pressbook and presentation of Swiss Family Robinson, though the DVD has a runtime of 126 min, two minutes fewer than what is stated in this re-release pressbook and in the original pressbook.)

"Son Of Flubber" 1970 Re-Release Information:

(NOTE: The live-action featurette "Dad, Can I Borrow the Car? premiered with this re-release.)

"The Aspect Ratio for "Son of Flubber" is 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical re-release framing is 1.75:1, the DVD release is 1.33:1.)

"Dumbo"/ "The Legend Of Lobo" 1972 Combo Re-Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR PLEASE NOTE!

To achieve maximum theatrical quality, project these films at the aspect ratio indicated below:

"DUMBO" Aspect Ratio 1.75 to 1/ "THE LEGEND OF LOBO" Aspect Ratio 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical ratio for the re-release of "The Legend Of Lobo" is 1.75:1, the DVD releases are at a 1.33:1 (Open-matte/ Pan & Scan?) ratio.) Also, apparently "Dumbo" was presented in 1972 in an aspect ratio of 1.75:1 which hadn't been invented until almost 15 years after "Dumbo" premiered, and therefore this showing is an example of the critically frowned upon re-release of Disney animated films in improper aspect ratios.)

"Perri" 1972 Re-Release Information:
http://affichesdisney.canalblog.com/arc ... index.html

"ASPECT RATIO 1.75 TO 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical framing for this re-release is 1.75:1, the DVD release of the film is only 1.33:1.)

"The Sword In The Stone" 1972 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for "Sword in the Stone" to achieve maximum screen quality is 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the original theatrical framing for this re-release is 1.75:1, all home media releases of this film are at 1.33:1.)

"Mary Poppins" 1973 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio to create the most Supercalifragilistic screen image is 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical framing for this re-release is 1.75:1, the DVD releases are at 1.66:1 and 1.85:1.)

"Snowball Express"/ "The World's Greatest Athlete" 1973 Combo Re-Release Information:

"MR EXHIBITOR...PLEASE NOTE! For best screen presentation, project these films at the aspect ratios indicated below:

The World's Greatest Athlete aspect ratio 1:75 to 1

Snowball Express aspect ratio 1:75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the re-release for both films were shown at 1.75:1, "Snowball Express" is on DVD at 1.33:1, and "The World's Greatest Athlete" is on DVD at 1.85:1.)

"Song Of The South" 1973 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for "Song of the South" is 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for "Song of the South" when it premiered in 1946 was 1.33:1. Therefore the 1.75:1 matting of this 1973 re-release is another example of the critically frowned upon theatrical re-releases of Disney films in improper aspect ratios.)

"That Darn Cat" 1973 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for "That Darn Cat" to Achieve Purr-Fect Screen Image is 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: While the theatrical framing for this re-release was 1.75:1, it's DVD release is a pan & scan, 1.33:1 ratio.)

"Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N." 1974 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for "LT. ROBIN CRUSOE, U.S.N." to achieve the best screen image is 1:75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical framing for this re-release is 1.75:1, the DVD release of the film is only 1.33:1.)

"Bambi" 1975 Re-Release Information:

"Mr. Exhibitor the aspect ratio for BAMBI for best screen quality is 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for "Bambi" when it premiered in 1942 was 1.33:1. Therefore the 1.75:1 matting of this 1975 re-release is another example of the critically frowned upon theatrical re-releases of Disney animated films in improper aspect ratios.)

"Blackbeard's Ghost" 1975 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for "Blackbeard's Ghost" to achieve the best screen image is 1:75 to 1"

(NOTE: While the theatrical framing for this re-release was 1.75:1, it's DVD release is a pan & scan, 1.33:1 ratio.)

"The Jungle Book" 1978 Re-Release Information:
http://affichesdisney.canalblog.com/arc ... index.html

"THE ASPECT RATIO FOR A SWINGIN' IMAGE IS 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: The theatrical framing for this re-release matches the presentation on the Platinum Edition DVD release of "The Jungle Book".)

"One Hundred And One Dalmatians" 1979 Re-Release Information:

"The Aspect Ratio for a Spot-tacular Screen Image is 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" when it premiered in 1961 was 1.33:1. Therefore, the 1.75:1 matting of this 1979 re-release is another example of the critically frowned upon theatrical re-releases of Disney animated films in improper aspect ratios.)

You don't make the film fill your TV, be it 4:3 or 16:9, you make your TV fit the original ratio of the film. If that means a letterboxing or pillarboxing of a film, so be it.

I've received the following pressbooks...

 "Perri" 1957 Premiere Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR - PLEASE NOTE!

Best Projection Results Are Obtained By Using The Following Aspect Ratios In The Presentation Of Walt Disney's "Perri":

FROM - 1:33 to 1
TO - 1:75 to 1

Please Do Not Go Beyond 1:75 to 1 Aspect Ratio Or You Will Lose Top And Bottom Of Picture."

(NOTE: The DVD release of "Perri" is 1.33:1. As long as this is an open matte transfer on the DVD, it would be consistent with one option of theatrical framing. The other option would include 1.75:1.)

"Now You See Him, Now You Don't" 1972 Premiere Release Information:

"THE ASPECT RATIO FOR BEST VIEWABLE QUALITY IS 1.75 To 1."

(NOTE: While the original theatrical framing for this film was 1.75:1, the DVD release is misframed at 1.85:1.)

I've updated the list above...

I've received the following pressbooks...

"Condorman" 1981 Premiere Release Information:

"THE ASPECT RATIO TO CAPTURE ALL THE SOARING ADVENTURE IS 1.75 to 1."

(NOTE: While the original theatrical framing for this film was 1.75:1, it is misframed on both the Disney and Anchor Bay DVDs at 2.35:1, and the Anchor Bay DVD also has a 1.33:1 Pan & Scan version.)

...the theatre kit states a runtime of 1 hr., 30 min., matching its runtime on DVD...

"Tron" 1982 Premiere Release Information:

"THE ASPECT RATIO FOR AN EXCITING SCREEN IMAGE IS 2:35 TO 1"

(NOTE: The original theatrical framing for this film was the more common 2.35:1 (35mm prints), and also 2.20:1(70mm prints) for some venues. It is presented on DVD at a 2.20:1 ratio.)

*Like Sleeping Beauty and The Black Cauldron, Tron was shown in both 2.35 and 2.20 ratios, the more common/ traditional ratio being 2.35. Somewhat like IMAX showings today, where some films selected to be shown in IMAX theatres concurrently with the traditional theatre showings will be shown at a different ratio to fit the IMAX dimensions, different than what most people will see in a traditional theatre.

...the theatre kit states a runtime of 1 hr. 36 min., matching its runtime on DVD...

I'll update the list shortly...

Agreed. I could understand being off, but in the 1.66:1-1.85:1 range, but to be that far off (twice!) is crazy.

Could someone be informed about this and other ratios?

Well, since there's a "Filmed in Panavision" credit in the opening credits of the movie, and since every widescreen release of the movie has been in 2.35:1, I'm inclined to believe the pressbook is wrong. Now, I haven't seen the movie, just pieces of it on YouTube. If I could see the movie, then I could see in an instant whether it was shot anamorphically or not.

You need to upload the file first to a file-sharing site (like sendspace, megaupload, rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared etc) and then post the link here.

Okay, I uploaded the Condorman page with the aspect ratio image to this site, for those interested. You'll have to wait a few seconds for the regular download tab to appear, then click that...

It's been a little whilte, but I've finally gotten some new pressbooks in to add to the list:

"Lady and the Tramp" 1980 reissue pressbook

"Special Note...The Aspect Ratio is 2.35 to 1"

This re-release presentation was only offered in cinemascope.

"Bambi" 1982 reissue pressbook

"The Aspect Ratio to Achieve the Most Twitterpated Screen Image is 1.75 to 1"

(NOTE: Again, this aspect ratio hadn't been invented until over a decade after the production of Bambi and therefore this is an example of the critically frowned upon reframing of the original theatrical aspect ratio to create a widescreen presentation)

"Cinderella" 1981 reissue pressbook

"The Aspect Ratio to Chieve the Most Cinderific Screen Quality is 1.75 to 1"

NOTE: Again, this aspect ratio hadn't been invented for at least another 5 years and therefore this is an example of the critically frowned upon reframing of the original theatrical aspect ratio to create a widescreen presentation)

"Mary Poppins" 1980 reissue pressbook

No Framing Instructions Found

Wow, didn't realize how long it's been since I've been on here. Anyway, I received the following two pressbooks sometime ago, just now getting around to posting about them on here...

"Big Red" 1962 Premiere Release Information:

"MR. EXHIBITOR - PLEASE NOTE!

Give your patrons the best possible picture on your theatre screen. For top projection results in the presentation of "BIG RED" you must use

ASPECT RATIO 1.75 to 1

WARNING: If projected at a ratio less than 1.75 to 1 there will be a black border at top and/or bottom of screen!"

(NOTE: While the original theatrical framing for this film was 1.75:1, the Anchor Bay DVD release is misframed at 1.85:1, and has a Pan & Scan version, while the Disney DVD release is at a 1.33:1 (Open-matte/ Pan & Scan?) ratio.)

1964's "Emil And The Detectives", no projection instructions given in its pressbook. Also, the live-action short "The Tattooed Police Horse" premiered with this.

I'll update the list at the top of this page shortly...

Many Adventures Winnie Pooh aspect ratio?

Post by jade »

Was this 1977 film released in 1.75:1 or 1.66:1? I've heard both on numerous websites and i'd love a definitive answer. Maybe someone here is seen one of the kits sent to theaters advising them on how to display it?

And then there's the anomaly that is The Rescuers, where the widescreen version on DVD is 1.66:1, but fullscreen clips from it are 1.33:1 open matte...however, if you combine the two you get a 1.45:1 frame:

Does anyone know form where the 1.33:1 Open Matter comes form?

Oh and I hope you don't mind me bumping this age old thread.

Probably the VHS or laserdisc although I don't know for sure. None of the DVDs were ever in 1.33:1.

^My guess would be the VHS as well (probably the laserdisc too; I'm having trouble finding the aspect ratios of the 2 laserdisc releases). I don't know much about TV airings pre-VHS era, so must have been cropped for being shown on TV as well?

It came from the fullscreen clips on one of the bonus features on the disc: "Under the Hat Villains," and likely derived from the 1.33:1 masters used for the 1992 and 1999 VHS and LaserDisc releases.
