Beauty and the Beast Becomes Highest Grossing PG Film Ever

I wonder how the other billion dollar earners for the year will compare to it.

It'll be interesting to see if they can surpass it or not. One thing's for sure, Beauty and the Beast won't be the number 1 movie of the year, that honor will be for The Last Jedi. But it could still be second. I guess the films with more possibilities of overtaking its income are Spider-Man: Homecoming, Justice League, the new Transformers film or Despicable Me 3.

Luke's review, Aaron's review, Leonard's review... none of them go into full-on specific "what's new, give me extreme detailed specifics" comparisons. That's not what professional film critics do.

Actually, I have read at least one professional review that does at least mention Emma's acting (it wasn't favorable of it), but I am quoting this because I finally went to read those reviews and only have been able to read Luke's review. The links to the other reviews don't work. Can I have ones that do?

I was thinking the same with The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens made over $2 billion and Rogue One made just over $1 billion as a side story. It is possible though, that the Force Awakens made as much as it did, because of the gap from the last movie and with as much Star Wars as we are going to get from now on, the number will probably be between The Force Awakens and Rogue One. The Last Jedi will be big, but it will be interesting how it does in comparison to The Force Awakens. If it does $1.3B or $1.4B, Beauty and the Beast may still out run it.

And who knows, the likes of Spider-man or any of the other blockbusters of the year could be King of the Box Office for 2017. I personally have no idea how it will play out, but it will be interesting to follow.

^What you said about The Last Jedi makes sense. I also think it's probable it won't do the same numbers as The Force Awakens, but I think it will have no difficulty in surpassing Beauty and the Beast. Episode VII left many things unresolved and many people will want to know how the story continues. But we'll see. Box office is quite unpredictable sometimes, that's what makes it interesting to follow in my opinion.

I would agree except for the fact that the last Jedi being will be Carrie Fisher's swan song. And apparently she's in it quite a bit. That alone means it will break all kinds of records. There's no chance it wont do better imo. This will be the dark knight for the star wars franchise.

^ I haven't watched The Force Awakens (I know, dreadful. Never really got into them, I'll watch it at some point though). But yes, unresolved things will definitely keep people coming back and the combination of it being Carrie Fisher's last film will definitely help. It's tough to crack, these factors could even push it over the $2 billion mark.

I know what you mean about the unpredictability of the Box Office, anything can change it. The release of another film, weather, environment, time of the year, availability, advertising or even the thirst for a new adventure.

In regards to Beauty and the Beast in Japan:
Week 1 ~$12.6M
Week 2 ~$20.3M ($33M)
Week 3 ~$27M ($60.1M)

Numbers from Box Office Mojo

It has actually gained each week in Japan. This could be because of Golden Week, so it'll be interesting to see next weeks Japanese numbers.

I didn't take that into account. Yes, it will definitely have an effect on the box office, like Heath Ledger's passing had its effect on The Dark Knight.

I had a thought while listening to “Evermore” today (more like a what-could’ve-been thought). I couldn’t help thinking about how they might’ve implemented Dan Stevens more during his song by doing a similar thing in musicals where a character who looks one way looks another while singing by themselves in their own thoughts (similar to Quasi in the Hunchback musical).

Perhaps start the song with Beast looking in a mirror after Belle’s just left at a vision of himself before the Curse (“I never needed anyone in my life…”), and then cut to him turning away from the mirror looking the way he did pre-Curse (except in current Beast's clothes, ofc). Maybe even have a scene from his p.o.v. at “I close my eyes but she’s still there”) of him looking down at his beast-like hands to keep continuity that he is still a Beast throughout. And then end the song with something akin to a Sophie Hatter situation (if you’ve seen Howl’s Moving Castle) where he reverts back into the Beast once he resigns himself to his fate ("waiting here forevermore.").

Not only would Dan Stevens had had more time to shine, but it would’ve allowed him and the character to emote more in Beast’s critical character moment. Plus the song would’ve been unfiltered. Oh, well. Too bad they didn’t think of something similar.

Ooh I love the cover! And wow this is going to have so many bonus features! And I'm surprised it's coming out so early! Don't they want a money-maker like this in theatres as long as it will continue to make money in theatres? Wouldn't putting it on video ruin people seeing it in theatres?

Those are some very nice covers, I agree. In regards to the early home video release, it may very well reduce the amount the movie makes (unless it encourages more people to see it before it disappears from the big screen), but Disney probably doesn't care about a few million dollars or so. It will however hit $500 million at the North American box office this weekend, probably Saturday.

Update for Japan: Rank
Week 1 ~$12.6M (#1)
Week 2 ~$20.3M ($33M) (#1)
Week 3 ~$27M ($60.1M) (#1)
Week 4 ~$10.9M ($71M) (#1)
Week 5 ~$8.7M ($79.8M) (#1)
Week 6 ?????????????

It's a big drop from week 3's $27 million to week 4 with $10.9 million, so unless it picks up, it probably won't finish over $150 million. If we base its numbers on Frozen and Alice in Wonderland, then it has another $30 million to make ($110M), but it really is hard to predict whether or not it will drop over the next 4 weeks. If it can hold at roughly $8 million, then it could very well make it to $130 million, which is what it will need to acquire the ninth worldwide box office spot from Frozen (plus a few million from around the World).

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... st2017.htm

Out of interest too, is there anyone who thinks the Prologue could have sounded less casual. I guess the big thing for me, was how "beast" was pronounced in regards to "For who could ever learn to love a beast?" It's really just minor I guess, but it did stick with me.

Wow, Harriet sings gorgeously! It's so sad she couldn't be heard in the film!

As for the pronunciation of "beast" in the prologue, I didn't mind it, but yes, in the original it was more serious, and better. But the whole original movie was better...
