Aladdin (Live-Action)

Post by Escapay »

UD's front page mentions a new live-action Aladdin in development...
The Front Page wrote:Among the other projects being developed by Shankman's Offspring Entertainment: a live-action Aladdin film being written by Bill Kelly (Blast From the Past and Disney's upcoming Enchanted).
I for one am excited at the idea and hope it turns out well. I don't want it to be a straight adaptation of the Disney version, though there are several elements I'd like the live-action version to retain, like Magic Carpet and Abu. Since I doubt they could get Robin Williams to be a live-action Genie, I'd love to see what they'll do with the character, hopefully make him a whole new Genie that's *not* based on the Disney one.

i think itd be great as long as its not tooo much like the animated one...they could take the basic story and change it up a lot, but i agree the carpet and abu should remain...model/actress/singer aishwarya rai would make a beautiful jasmine...who do you all think would make good actors for this???...

There's already a live-action version of Disney's Aladdin; it's called The Thief of Bagdad. 8)

I don't like the idea. To me it seems a live action version of Aladdin would likley replace a Broadway production. I personally would like a broadway version more than a live-action film. Mostly because a live action film would most likley take away the songs, which are pretty much the only thing I like about Aladdin.

Wow!!! I'm so excited about it! My goodness I was waiting for years for this to come out as a live-action film! I hope they don't follow the animated feature's storyline because then the comparison will be inevitable. Anyway Aladdin is a favourite hero of mine since I was a child, I'm so happy with these news! :D :D :D
By the way, I thought Disney was going to release a "Prince of Persia" movie too. Isn't it weird 2 films with similar heroes to come out?
Anyway, the only thing left now is a "Little Mermaid" live-action adaptation. But with the sad ending and everything. I hope xxhplinkxx won't read this!

I'm not really sure that adaptations of Disney animated classics would work as live action movies. It's one thing to do them as a stage show which is a very stylised representation, but to do them as a movie would require a huge amount of CGI, and at that point, it's heading towards a large part of it being a glorified animation itself. Michael Eisner was very keen to get a live action Beauty and the Beast produced, and when I first heard that I thought it was an awesome idea, but now, I'm not so sure. As a large part of the movie just features Belle, the Beast and the enchanted objects, there would be huge sections which would be virtually wholly rendered in CGI apart from Belle. That might not be quite the case with Aladdin, but there would be some scenes where it would be needed.

Personally, I think we've got the perfect film as it is - and the same goes for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. If they want to do anything else with them it should be as a stage show. I can't see a film adaptation working.

I read this news and I really have no idea what it could even turn out like. I can't say whether I'm excited or disgusted, because I'm not. I'm intruiged to some extent, though, and wonder if they'll go back to the plot of the original tale (yet not quite what Disney's pre-motherless Aladdin was supposed to be like). And who they cast as well. And what they'll do about music (will they at least hint the Alan Menken songs?).

I really doubt it will have anything much to do with the Disney version. It will likely go back to the original ideas and work from there.

Wasn't "A Kid in Aladdin's Palace" loosely based on the Disney film? ::scratches head::

I'll have to dig out the VHS to confirm, but it seems like a lot of the designs were the same.

This is an interesting idea. I think it could work if done correctly. But on the other hand, I also think that it could fail just as easily if not done carefully.

I sure hope that they don't disappoint!

I'm confused. Would Disney be making this? Or be involved at all? If so, I'm totally opposed to the idea. Why not just make live-action films of all the animated classics? I know that they made "The Jungle Book" and "101 Dalmatians" into live-action films, but were they necessary? Sure, the locales in TJB were beautiful, and the puppies in 101D were really cute, but they're not necessary. I don't want Disney to make a live-action "Aladdin". It's one of my all-time favorites, and don't want it messed with! If a company makes a live-action "Aladdin", and it has nothing to do with Disney or its version, than, whatever. :x

"A Kid in Aladdin's Palace" was a sequel to "A Kid in King Arthur's Court," which was based on a Mark Twain classic "A Conecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." The sequel is more of a rehashing of the story from the first film where the boy gets sucked into another time and place with a crisis and he must solve the problem to return to his own time. I don't think the intent was to make it look like that animated film. Elements of Arabic culture are very distinct, so it's hard for settings not to look familiar.

As for this live action version of "Aladdin," I think it could be really cool to see what they do with it. "Aladdin" was based on a story from a book of Arabic folk tales (I'm too worn out from studying to go look up the title) and I know that Disney took elements from that book to create their version. I think it would be kind of cool if Disney did a splice of their animated version with the original stories. It's basically what they have done with "Mary Poppins" on Broadway. I'm thinking the main reason we are seeing a live action (probably a musical) adaptation of a Disney classic is because Disney is probably hoping that if "Enchanted" is a huge success, that it will create a demand for childrens movie musicals. And why not get ahead of the game by having another one in production ready to come out a year later? And why "Aladdin"? Because "Aladdin" is the worst selling of the Platinum Edition titles and Disney is probably hoping to re-create public interest in the story and characters. I personally would have rather seen them finally adapt "Aida" for the screen as a live action film, but that will probably never happen.

I wish "Aida" would be aniimated...I've never seen it, but I know the story, and I think it'd be swell. I wonder if they ever would animate it? Hasn't it been off of Broadway for a while now?

The only thing the 1967 and 1994 films share are source material, but there's hardly any nods or acknowledgements that the live-action version was based on the animated version. The 1994 one is more about an adult Mowgli, returning to "civilization", trying to adapt, then trying to save *his* civilization from the British. I always consider the live-action one to be just another adaptation of/sequel to the novel, and the film itself is mediocre at best.

1996's 101 Dalmatians, on the other hand, was a pretty straightforward adaptation of the 1961 film. And I think that's where the fault lay, as it brought nothing really new to the story and truly felt unnecessary. The one bright side of it? It brought forth 2000's 102 Dalmatians, which is severely underrated and given much more trashtalk than it deserves.

I for one am not looking forward to a live-action Aladdin. Live action remakes have never done any good for disney films. The Jungle Book remake was dull and they ruined the 101 Dalmatians remake with slapstick (it was okay otherwise).

Wow Im actually excited about this hehe. Aladdin is my favorite Disney Animated Classic. But what Im hoping is that they just don't decide to make some random movie and slap the Aladdin title on it. That won't be good.

I really hope its done right. I think they could make an amazing live-action adaptation if they know what their dealing with. Of course it will probably be nothing compared to the original animated one, but I wouldnt want it to be better because it's my favorite.

What I hope it does still have are: Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, Abu, Carpet, Jafar, Sultan, Raja, the Cave of Wonders and so on. Along the lines of the Disney version story, with out going on a totally different road. I hope they all retain their original character...I don't want to see some hot Jasmine with a stupid attitude or anything...I still want them to seem like their animated counter-parts.

What I dont want: As much as I love the Song's from Aladdin I hope they don't put them in this movie. It's different between animated movies and live-action ones. Sure I hope theres still a scene like a Whole New World with out A whole New world...does that make sense? lol.

Anyway seeing how 101 Dalmations went, Im not too worried about this, since I kind of enjoyed that live-action one. (the animated one is still better) But I hope Aladdin is good. So for now I have high hopes since I think Aladdin could be done wonderfully in live-action.

Now about The Little Mermaid...lol that one would be really hard to pull off.

So, is Disney involved in this? Is Offspring Entertainment making it and Disney just distributing it? Like "Valiant" or "The Wild"? What role is Disney playing in it? And, did Disney come up with the idea or did Offspring?
