Why do you collect Disney DVDs?
Why do you collect Disney DVDs?
I collect them for nostalgia purposes and also for my future children. Watching these movies almost makes me feel like I'm going back in time to when I was a little kid.
Those are my main reasons for being a Disney DVD collector.

I collect them just for myself for entertainment purposes. I know that I will enjoy the movie that I buy, therefore I will be happy. That's why I buy them.

The biggest reason for me is to replace worn out VHS tapes. There are some movies I still love but don't need to watch anymore because I know them backwards and forward by heart, but I like having them with me just in case nostalgia pops up and I want to relive some good memories. My collection is ready and waiting for my future children to enjoy.

That's a great question Ali. I am interested in hearing everyone's response.
I collect Disney DVDs because I believe in (with a few modifications) Walt Disney's philosophy. I love the message that Walt was trying to convey to the world which wasn't just about mice and theme parks. Walt had an idea and that was that we can make this world a better place. Everything Walt did was based on this idea. That is why he put so much effort into films like Pollyanna and Mary Poppins. Neither of those films were ever intended to merely entertain. Walt was trying to make a point that the world would do well to heed. (I deeply regret EPCOT was never built, it was another great idea based on Walt's philosophy.)
I also love watching Disney films because so many of them are just great films. Everyone loves to watch a great movie and Disney movies are among the best.
I love Disney films because I can watch them without regretting anything that I see, hear, or any philosophy that is portrayed. I love the cleanliness of the films. This is related, of course, to my first statement.

I collect Disney DVDs because, by and large, they are fabulous movies. Even when they aren't, there is always something to love, whether it's a bit of animation, a character design, or a musical cue.
I had some Disney VHS tapes, but the DVD format is vastly superior, so all of those movies have been upgraded.

There is something that needs clarified in this discussion. The question pertained to all Disney DVDs but I think some people read that as specifically the animated films. When you answer the question, please clarify what type of Disney film you are talking about.
I was referring to all Disney films and primarily to the films from Walt Disney's lifetime.

I collect them because I have a love for the Disney Features. There is something about going back and watching something from your childhood that resonates with a lot of people. And not just the Animated movies, as the slogan says, "there's magic in the memories" and that is so true.
And just because a film hasn't hit its 20th Anniversary doesn't mean it deserves less. I collect the New stuff as well, because even though there have been hits and misses in recent years, there is still a magic about their movies that no other Studio has ever been able to capture.

I collect Disney movies because I like them and I enjoy watching them more then once and want to be able to watch them whenever. I don't buy all of them, only the ones I love or know I'll like. They are classics and how could you not own some of them. I also have them for when I have kids because I want them to grow up with the movies like I did and they might not be available at the time they're growing up so it's safer to get them now.

I collect Disney DVDs because I love Disney movies, mostly the animated ones, but there are a lot of live action ones I like too. I agree with MichaeLeah. There are a lot of good life lessons and morals found in the Disney films and after watching them for the first time, you take with you an important lesson. Sometimes you're not even conscious of it. I just started reading The Gospel According to Disney and even if you aren't religious, it's a great way to uncover the morals woven into Walt's films. It's a little boring when the author is just giving a movie synopsis (so don't read the chapters to the DIsney movies you haven't seen yet!), but when he starts to analyze it, you're like "Wow! I never noticed that." For instance, he does things as extreme as comparing the Blue Fairy to the Virgin Mary and things less religious like about accepting people who are different like in Dumbo. Walt Disney's movies have this constant theme of doing the right thing and working hard towards your goal. There are also plenty of times he shows that taking the easy street may lead to punishment (e.g. Snow White eating a "magic wishing apple" for her dreams to come true and look what happened). I guess I'm just trying to reiterate what MichaeLeah already said: "I love Disney films because I can watch them without regretting anything that I see, hear, or any philosophy that is portrayed."
Also, I love sharing my Disney movies to my friends (well, the ones whom I trust will take care of them of course). A lot of them grew up with them too and enjoyed reliving their childhood or just to get that happy feeling after watching a Disney movie. At my dorm, we watched a lot of movies, and Disney movies were a big part of what got circulated around. I even had an official case for lending out DVDs and I made a list of who had what.
All in all, I collect Disney DVDs for the enjoyment they give to myself and others.

I collect both animated and live action disney films from 1980-today... I am sure you are wondering why, well because most of the older ones I have never seen with the exception of the original parent trap and freaky friday. I collect them because I am a huge fan of everything Disney. I also collect them because they are great movies that are entertaining, timeless and great for the whole family. I also would like to hand them down to my children when I have them.

I collect mainly for myself, and any future spawn I may produce.
Live-Action: While not many of Disney's live action features hold up well today, I only really collect the ones I enjoy or blindbuy and think I will (and of course, now I'm stuck with a complete waste of time known as The Boatniks). I mainly try and collect the live action movies that are entertaining, or at least significant in Disney culture. While every Disney fan should at least have Mary Poppins in their collection, I sometimes go for the other stuff as well. I've got stuff like The Black Hole (Disney's first PG film), Tron (Disney's first with CGI), The Watcher in the Woods, and Something Wicked This Way Comes (two extremely non-Disney-material films that are extremely underrated).
Disney Animated Classics: At first I simply wanted to collect the ones I like (for awhile I only had Aladdin), but like most everyone else, I began to want the complete set of 45. I've got 35 now, though I probably only have 10-15 that I actually truly love (and you can bet that The Lion King is NOT one of the 10-15 while Chicken Little is!!!)
Disney Other: Stuff like DTVs, non-DAC animated movies, Disney TV Shows, I simply buy if I'm interested in it, or if I see it at a great price new or used. Plus, some DTVs aren't that bad. Scamp's Adventure is pretty much the same role-reversal formula, but it works. Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest is completely unnecessary, but is a fun "what-if" midquel. "What if we could actually see Bambi's life with his father?" "What if they had made Bambi today and this is one really long and fully animated deleted scene?" "What if Bambi had never been made and this were a standalone movie? Would people still dismiss it as a lousy children's movie?"

Most of my small but growing collection (excluding the Treasures Series here for a moment) is comprised of Disney's animated classics.
Well I am not exactly sure why I am collecting, to tell you the truth, but at some point, it just became part of who I am. I started out stumbling upon this website last fall looking for some information on Disney. I found the reviews page and Luke's reviews of the Treasures series, which sparked my interest in buying the Treasures series. Prior to that, I never owned a Disney DVD and had a pretty sparse collection of DVDs in general. I never had considered myself a DVD collector at all. I don't know if any of you recall but some of my earliest posts were about "why collect them, when you can rent the DVDs" - well somehow I ended up on the "buying" bandwagon, so here I am along with the rest of you. I'm buying for purely selfish reasons - Although I've no time to watch them, nor plans in the near future to watch them, I know at some point (when school and work schedules allow) I am really going to treasure finally getting to watch them.

I had a very good chunk of Disney's pre-Emperor's New Groove animated films on video, so at first, the reason I got them was to watch some of my favourite films in their correct aspect ratio and with lots of bonus features. Eventually, I just started to buy Disney DVDs compulsively until around September of last year. I've slowed way down since then in terms of DVD purchasing on the whole, actually.

My siggy says it all. I collect all good movies, and Walt Disney does have a lot of really good movies for the whole family. I want my grandkids to see what I grew up with - I want them to experience the fun, and laughs I had in my childhood with the Walt Disney animated features, and most of the live-action feature films.
The three oldest grandkids already have some favorite Disney classics such as "Snow White & Seven Dwarfs", "101 Dalmations", "Robin Hood", "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier", "The Love Bug" and the original "The Parent Trap". We almost always have a family movie night once a month or more that includes a Walt Disney film, either animated or live-action.

Why do I collect Disney DVDs?
I own and actively purchase Disney live action movies and animated shorts and features, mainly because I enjoy them so much!
I liked the movies I grew up watching (North Avenue Irregulars, The Black Hole, The Rocketeer, Freaky Friday, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio...). My family saw them at the theaters, drive-ins, on The Wonderful World of Disney, The Disney Channel, and in syndication (The Mickey Mouse Club).
These movies entertain, comfort, and inspire me. To own them means I can actually watch them again! (since Disney doesn't replay most of their library on television) Plus, I can watch them at basically any time I want, as often as I like. Having them at my disposal, I can introduce them to my family and attempt to pass on appreciation for the efforts of Walt and his crew.
