Re: Mary Poppins Returns

From what I recall, Michael gave the tuppence to his father not the bird woman. Still an act of compassion, albeit inadequate in light of his father’s impending job loss. As for the adults will all forget by tomorrow line, I took that not to mean that they would forget what they learned so much as ...

Re: Mary Poppins Returns

I thought I’d like it. I do love the original. But it was quite a disappointment. For a film which is – supposedly – put together by lovers of the 1964 original, it is deeply thematically out of step with it. This is a film made by someone who evidently regards the cartoon penguins as more integral ...

Re: Toy Story 4

I’m very curious to see what this supposed emotional ending is. After all, we do know for certain that the characters will not die, they won’t be split up, they’ll get a happy ending - so now we’ve already had them being passed on by Andy, where do we go from there? Imo, I think it’s kind of concern...

A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes So This Is Love Cinderella Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo O, Sing Sweet Nightingale The Work Song I love this movie’s songs. Even The Work Song. Re: Live -Action Renaissance?

That’s a rather alarming prospect. We can only hope that sequels to such remakes don’t prove as popular - and it’s rather difficult to conceive of where these sequels could go that’s interesting (especially as the direct-to-video DisneyToon precedents aren’t very promising). But then again, maybe an...

Re: Live -Action Renaissance?

They won't need to since both titles are heading directly to streaming. Disney's streaming service will be the home for remakes of moderately popular animated films. That’s wise of them! But it doesn’t change the overall point I was making - once Disney is done remaking the really popular ones, whe...

Re: Live -Action Renaissance?

I don’t think there is a live-action renaissance. Like so many of Disney’s recent live-action properties before it, from John Carter to A Wrinkle in Time, Nutcracker and the Four Realms is clearly going to bomb. Hard. The only big hitters in Disney’s live-action production are of course the remakes ...

Re: Celebrating Mickey on Blu-ray 10/23

An interesting selection, one that’s both frustrating and pleasantly surprising. I think the fact there’s just one black-and-white cartoon, despite there being a good selection of some solid ones (The Mad Doctor, Mickey’s Good Deed...) is a bit disappointing, and as anyone looking at my username wou...

Re: How would you rank the different eras of Disney animatio

Here goes... 1. The Golden Age (1937-42) : It's nice to see a consensus around this, both here and in terms of film criticism generally. There isn't really a serious debate to be had, is there? Walt Disney created 4, maybe 5 absolute masterpieces, the logical endpoint of his innovations in short sub...

Re: Doctor Who Discussion

Resurrecting this topic to discuss the oncoming Christmas special! Who should be the 13th Doctor? Personally, I think it has to be a woman - both on a thematic, storytelling level (considering the precedents of Missy, Clara Who and the like) and an ethical one. But whoever they are, it's been a long...

Re: The Incredibles 2

I'm pretty sceptical about an Incredibles sequel. It's not really the kind of conventional superhero movie which leaves thematic and storytelling space for follow-ups. It was always closer, in style and in fact detail too, to something like a family-friendly Watchmen than it is to Iron Man or Batman...

Re: Funko POP! Disney

Scrooge isn't the best pop ever, but he's a vast improvement on, say, the likes of Donald and Goofy. The newer Disney pops are lightyears ahead of the originals - especially those SDCC ones. Very frustrating to be in the UK where I can't get those, or Disney Treasures, except through the likes of eB...

Re: 2016 elections thread

Maybe if you don't live in the country, where you'll experience the direct effects of a Trump presidency. I can understand why people don't like Hillary, but the idea that anyone thinks she's equally bad as or worse than Trump does not compute. Trump is effectively an isolationist on foreign policy...

Speaking as a Brit...Bernie is wonderful. Cruz and Kasich are evil. Clinton is a different type of evil. And although his stated policies are unpleasant, I think Trump would, in a way, be preferable to Clinton.

I would say that the newer films like Frozen and Zootopia are superior in that they try to actively put forward relatively contentious moral messages at a time when those issues are particularly topical/divisive, as opposed to simply repeating accepted and perfectly banal wisdoms like in Beauty and ...

This era of Disney animation is better than the Renaissance. And with the welcome addition of being morally pristine to boot.

Re: "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books

I've always adored the books. What other piece of children's literature can get young people into Lolita and depressing 19th century erotica? The movie is what got into me the books in the first place, but looking back it is...severely flawed. As has been mentioned on this thread, Carrey doesn't pla...
