It's worth noting that liberalism isn't an inherently left-wing ideology. In America there are liberals in both of the main political parties. Flanger-Hanger speaks the truth: When the "liberal agenda" stops getting ratings, then Hollywood will have an incentive to go conservative. It's a ...

Alcohol and marijuana are dangerous to kids, because their brains are not yet full-grown. That's why I would limit it to people 18 years old and over. I completely agree about the medical effects, and the principle that it would be wrong to give the stuff to kids, I'm just not sure how such a law c...

I agree with Goliath that consumption and production should be legal. We can argue until the cows come home about the level of regulation (personally I would be in favour of as little as possible within reason, and would probably not even outlaw it for certain age groups, ditto alcohol), but regulat...

I agree that the vitriol and gun/war comparisons in political publicity should be toned down, and the death threats to pro-healthcare politicians are probably a result of the likes of Palin and Beck sensationalising the democrats' proposals (as someone living in the U.K., I can't begin to say how wo...

Again, while I dislike Sarah Palin, I doubt a man who burned the American flag and claims either to hate or not believe in God would want her to be in the White House.

A very tragic event. I think Sarah Palin is a ridiculous individual, but feel that laying the blame at her door for this incident is a little hasty. Jared Loughner's old classmates describe him as left-wing or liberal, as well as being critical of religion; his YouTube account also featured a video ...

The principle of smaller, less hands-on government appeals to me very much - since it seems to advocate independent freedom and responsibility, working in and benefiting from the Free Market rather than expecting the government to do anything for you - and there do seem to be moderate Tea Party vote...

I'll put in a defense for 'Sleeping Beauty' for a change, as I saw the DVD recently and was utterly charmed by parts of it. Colour-wise I think it's excellent, and the scenes with Maleficent are particularly beautiful. It works wonderfully with the Tchaikovsky score as well. The atmosphere that Laza...

I adore the Discworld books (and the old point and click games are still probably my favourites), and 'Mort' is definitely one of the best. It'll be interesting to see how Ron'n'John tackle it. Some of the humour is difficult to translate into the medium of film, and other Discworld adaptations have...

Yeah, the general consensus is: The Golden Age: Snow White - Bambi The Second Golden Age: Cinderella - The Jungle Book The Dark Age: The Aristocats - Oliver & Company The Renaissance: The Little Mermaid - Tarzan/Fantasia 2000 I'm surprised that the first era would be considered a Golden Era bec...

The labels really depend on personal preference so can be a little arbitrary. But, for what it's worth: I understood the Golden Age to consist only of Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi. The films from Cinderella through to The Jungle Book (and Walt's Death) are the next tier down, so ...

There's very little scholarly analysis of Disney that doesn't automatically think Disney = mainstream = The Man = evil.

Even 'Fantasia' is too frequently dismissed, snobbishly, as a failed attempt to appreciate high culture by a farm boy who should have known better.

Point taken! But it seems to me one thing to say that certain Disney films speak to or thrill one in a certain way (certainly that's true for me!), and quite another to define this as an 'essence' - a word which suggests to me some kind of fundamental element, without which a film would not be Disney.

I'm echoing Margos' sentiments here: changing the film's name will have little bearing on the quality of the film itself, much less either save or doom an entire corporation.

And I love your suggestion of 'Blondie and the Bandit'. Wish they'd called it that! 8)

I personally don't believe there's an 'Essence'. But there is certainly a brand. Probably like everyone on this forum, I would like as many Disney films as possible to be of a high quality. However, I don't think there should be any limitations on a filmmaker's creativity. When did the 'Disney Essen...

Correct, and because of the method of the writing in Walt's films (storyboards), no animated feature made under Walt ever received a nomination for screenwriting. In fact, no animated film from Disney has ever received a writing nomination, while PIXAR is on some kind of tear. There was, a while ag...
