Re: The Beatles 50th Anniversary Discussion..........

That sounds great, I'll certainly be giving it a watch if it's shown in the UK. Hopefully this year sees more Blu-Ray releases of their films - it's the 50th anniversary of the Maysles Brothers' documentary on their first US visit, What's Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A. and, of course, the 45th...

Re: Remakes, and you're view on them

I haven't seen The Wolf of Wall Street yet but surely it's use of profanity could, in fact, be in agreement with your opinion? By using it so frequently, it stands to reason that Scorsese could be showing that the world he's depicting lacks the decorum of everyday society and that their morals are s...

Re: Remakes, and you're view on them

I can't comment on the nominations since I haven't seen any of the films, but I completely agree about the overuse of profanity and sex. The filmmakers of the classic Hollywood era were able to tell wonderful stories and stir the audience's emotions without stooping to any of that. A little bit of ...

Re: Remakes, and you're view on them

My stand on remakes is they had better be true to the source of the original movie or as in the case of "Ben Hur" update from silent to sound and everything else is closely similar. There are two remakes that I can think of that are absolutely well-done from start to finish, those are &qu...

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2013

If Tangled were released in any other year, it would have probably won. It was just unfortunate enough to be competing against both Pixar and Dreamworks' most critically acclaimed films. The Wind Rises could win, but it's still a Japanese film about a controversial subject and hasn't been as well re...

Re: What do you want to see in 2014?

To my shame, I still haven't worked myself up to seeing Gone with the Wind yet so I'm looking forward to getting the 70th anniversary release. I'd really like to see more Scorsese on Blu-Ray this year - The Age of Innocence, After Hours and Who's That Knocking On My Door would do nicely, along with ...

Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2013

I'm pretty sure that Frozen will get its Oscar but that doesn't mean I've lost hope that they will, in my opinion, make the correct decision and award it to Miyazaki for The Wind Rises. The whole political aspect of the film shouldn't be a problem because the film isn't at all pro-imperial Japan or ...

The version of Ben-Hur that's so lauded is itself a remake of a better film. Remakes aren't always a bad thing.

Escape from Tomorrow - an indie shot at Disney World

Some rather positive buzz coming out of Sundance about Escape From Tomorrow - a film shot at Disney World without Disney's consent. Will Disney try to suppress it? Who knows. They haven't commented so far.

As (I think) Kierkegaard said, Descartes' famous "Cogito ergo sum" statement is fallacious in the fact it presupposes the existence of 'I'. That saying is still true! At least you know you (I) are alive and therefore exist (am). Well, it's neither true or false - it, like everything else,...

It is impossible to prove the existence of anything, due to the limitations of your senses as well as the fact they they can easily be fooled. As (I think) Kierkegaard said, Descartes' famous "Cogito ergo sum" statement is fallacious in the fact it presupposes the existence of 'I'. Persona...

Belle de jour was a relatively big hit when it was released as intrepid distributors/theatres knew just how to market it - hence why it is Bunuel's best known film. I quite like it, it seems to bridge surrealist Bunuel with social realist Bunuel but it feels like a jack of all trades and a master o...

Thanks. My favourite of Lean's films also happens to be the shortest - the aptly named Brief Encounter. It's a deeply moving, romantic film that charts the illicit love affair between Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard.

Cloud Atlas, Les Miserables, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty etc. haven't been released here yet. So I'll just give a tentative top 5: 1. Amour Michael Haneke rightly joined the double-Palme d'Or winner club with this study of love at its bitter end. French acting legends Jean-Louis Trintignant (And God C...

I finally got round to watching the recent restoration of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia . A round of applause for the team at Sony - this is quite possibly the best restoration every carried out, it looks like it could have been shot yesterday. Stunning. Everything about this film that can be said...

^So when they put the 3D version of a movie and the 2D version on separate discs, it's nothing more then a marketing scam (like including DVDs and digital copies)? I always thought the 3D version took up too much space to include both. I'm not entirely sure on the technicalities but the 3DBD spec c...

Manhattan is possibly Allen's best film and one of the greatest odes to a location in cinema. Other great Allen films are Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanours, Manhattan Murder Mystery and, my personal favourite, Love and Death.

You most certainly don't need more than one disc for 3D. The Chaney Phantom is already out on Blu, I believe.

I've lost count of how many Hitchcock titles have hit Blu-Ray this year. It's over 20 at least!

Glad to see you adding more reviews to your blog. I always enjoy reading one of your well-written critiques.
Thanks. I haven't had much time to write, recently due to exams and whatnot but I managed to squeeze one in.
