We've just posted our review of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: 2-Disc Special Edition. Harrison Ford's old-fashioned hero makes his big screen return in this long-awaited fourth installment from director Steven Spielberg and creator George Lucas. The adventure continues in 1957, with Indy joining a rebellious greaser youth (Shia LaBeouf) in search of missing mutual friends and answers to a cosmic mystery. Though lacking commentary and deleted scenes, Paramount's DVD release supplies a wealth of making-of video including an 80-minute Production Diary and several topical featurettes. Aaron Wallace provides our first Blu-ray Disc review with his assessment of Mike Myers' summer comedy flop, The Love Guru. Paramount's release offers many classes of bloopers plus a digital copy on a standard DVD. More...
October 14, 2008 - It's both a Tuesday and fall, meaning plenty of high-profile new DVDs and Blu-rays reach stores today. We'll be bringing you our review of the week's biggest release (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) shortly, but in the meantime, check out our schedule for a detailed overview of the big titles.
Despite grossing over $100 million domestically, Ben Stiller's war comedy/action film Tropic Thunder, will make a speedy trip to home video. Paramount/DreamWorks have pegged the R-rated Hollywood send-up for release on November 18th in a single-disc DVD, an unrated 2-Disc Director's Cut DVD, and a Director's Cut Blu-ray. Extras announced for the single disc include a cast audio commentary by director/star Stiller with co-stars Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr., a Tom Cruise make-up test, an MTV Movie Awards sketch, 7 cast member featurettes, and more. Cover art for the Director's Cut has been posted here.
We have an early DVD review for you of "NewsRadio": The Complete Series. Running for five seasons on NBC in the late 1990s, this witty ensemble sitcom depicts life at a Manhattan AM news station. Available at the end of this month, Sony's 12-disc set is identical in content but much lower in price than the four collections released from 2005 to 2007. In addition to 97 half-hour episodes, you get 50 audio commentaries, 4 extensive season gag reels, 4 "One Man NewsRadio" shorts, and a number of featurettes. Read the full review.
October 13, 2008 - Our newest review looks at Speed Racer, the impossibly colorful live-action film adapted from the 1960s Japanese cartoon by The Matrix Trilogy's Wachowski Brothers. Emile Hirsch stars as the title character, who's driven to uncover corruption in the World Racing League. Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, and Rain co-star in this long, flashy PG-rated movie. Warner's DVD includes two featurettes and a digital copy download code. More...
October 11, 2008 - Wrapping up our coverage of this week's new DVDs, Kelvin Cedeno spins "The Smurfs": Season 1, Volume 2. Warner's two-disc set concludes the first season with the next twenty episodes ranging from 12 minutes to 24. The release also includes the featurette "I Smurf the Smurfs" with a number of TV personalities weighing in on the white-hatted blue forest creatures. Full review.
October 10, 2008 - Today we bring you an exclusive interview with Mary Costa, the voice of Princess Aurora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. An internationally renowned opera singer, Ms. Costa remains grateful and fond for being chosen by Walt Disney himself to play the studio's third animated feature princess. She discusses making and watching the film, this week's new Platinum Edition DVD and Blu-ray, and working with Walt. Don't miss Renata Joy's Mary Costa interview.
Look with us at this week's new Jack Frost DVD from Warner. Narrated by groundhog Pardon-Me-Pete (Buddy Hackett), this 1979 Rankin/Bass stop-motion special tells of the normally invisible sprite's winter of humanity in the poor town of January Junction. The Remastered Deluxe Edition, the special's first major studio release after years of budget public domain discs, includes a winter crafts instructional featurette and 3 sing-along songs. Read on...

Our latest DVD review looks at Peanuts Deluxe Holiday Collection. The recently-released box set holds Warner's Remastered Deluxe Editions of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Given new transfers, the three well-known animated Peanuts specials are each joined by a bonus program and a new retrospective featurette. The set also includes a 6-song sampler of Christmas' soundtrack and six iTunes download codes. Read our full review and be sure to enter for a chance to win the DVD or a Charlie Brown holiday t-shirt.
October 7, 2008 - For the twelfth time in your life, Disney releases a new Platinum Edition DVD today. This one is Sleeping Beauty, the costly, stylish 1959 Technirama fairy tale. Joining the studio's elite collection just five years after debuting on DVD in a fine 2-Disc Special Edition, Sleeping is one of few Platinum titles to produce purchase uncertainty in collectors of Disney animation. We help you weigh the pros and cons with a thorough analysis of the set, which offers a remastered and wider feature presentation, more polished picture on a few choice ported extras, and a number of new additions including a walkthrough of Disneyland's castle, a 43-minute making-of documentary, an audio commentary, deleted songs, and the obligatory Disney Channel starlet music video. But before you go selling your old DVD, we've got the long list of supplements that have been dropped. Read the full review.
Our efforts to stay atop of the fall TV DVD blitz continues with Aaron Wallace's critique of "Dirty Sexy Money": The Complete First Season. The salaciously-titled ABC drama centers on a wealthy family, their tabloid-making scandals, and the attorney making sense of them. The 3-disc, 10-episode collection contains a trio of audio commentaries, 8 deleted scenes, 4 featurettes, and a bloopers reel. Read on...
October 5, 2008 - In our latest review, Kelvin Cedeno looks at Sex and the City, the blockbuster film spun out of HBO's popular woman-driven dramedy series. Does it stay true to the show and characters while providing something new and interest? Read the review and find out.
October 4, 2008 - It's been almost ten years since M. Night Shyamalan made a name for himself by writing and directing The Sixth Sense. He continues his fascination with supernatural-tinged suspense in The Happening, an R-rated film which comes to DVD on Tuesday. Mark Wahlberg stars as a biology professor who sets off with his wife (Zooey Deschanel), friend (John Leguizamo) and friend's daughter (Ashlyn Sanchez) when a mysterious illness begins wreaking havoc on the northeastern United States. Kelvin Cedeno reviews Fox's disc, which includes deleted scenes, a gag reel, and five featurettes on this critically-loathed summer release. Read on...
October 3, 2008 - Make way for more Peanuts. Previously relegated to bonus feature status, the winning 1972 special You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown now acts as title attraction on a new Remastered Deluxe Edition DVD available from Warner next week. Our review provides a thorough look at Linus' run for student body president plus its DVD-debuting accompaniment (2006's He's a Bully, Charlie Brown and an Elected featurette), complete with a transfer comparison. More...
October 2, 2008 - Our newest review looks at Alvin and the Chipmunks: Classic Holiday Gift Set, a 3-DVD collection recently released by Paramount. Featured here: 1981's A Chipmunk Christmas, the special that brought about the singing siblings' revival; Halloween and Thanksgiving specials that debuted on the USA Network in 1994; and nine thematically related half-hour and quarter-hour episodes from the animated series' sixth and seventh seasons of the late-'80s.
