August 31, 2006 - Disney's subsidiary The Baby Einstein Company has officially announced the 22nd DVD title in its award-winning series for babies and toddlers. Baby Einstein: Baby's First Moves, due October 24th, aims to get "parents and little ones clapping, waving and dancing to upbeat classical tunes from Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart." The disc purports to introduce 17 moves, from rolling to stomping, to children at various different levels of development. Bonus features will include a 5-minute workout for moms and babies hosted by fitness instructor Michelle Dozois, an imitation-instilling montage called "Let's Pretend", plus franchise staples Discovery Cards and Puppet Shows. Check out the full press release for more information and six pictures of the menus and program of this fall release.

August 30, 2006 - In UD's 472nd and latest DVD review, Ed South provides a parent's perspective on "Little Einsteins" Mission Celebration!, the recently-released compilation of the Playhouse Disney hit. This one follows the show's previous disc in format, providing three episodes including one which has not yet aired. While the critique sings the series' praises, it also points out that a full recommendation is not in order for most fans, based on its design and the show's rampant airplay. Read on...

An e-mail from Ken reveals that the Disney Movie Club has just made three more Club-exclusives discs of "Zorro" (Season 1: Volume 3, Season 1: Volume 4, and Season 1: Volume 5) available to current members. That puts the complete first season (1957-58) of the adventure series on disc in Region 1, with the 39 half-hour episodes distributed among five separate discs. Prospective members are now able to join the DMC with Volumes 1 and 2. Reportedly, the show is one of the Club's most popular Premiere DVDs, though to date, no general retail release has been scheduled for North America.

Aaron Wallace serves up a two-page review of "Darkwing Duck" Volume 1, the brand new 3-disc DVD debut of the popular early-'90s animated series. Fifteen years since first airing, the show holds up with unique and semi-plausible adventures centering on a semi-competent crime-fighter who squares off against an assortment of villains to keep the town of St. Canard safe. The show (which debuted new episodes both on Saturday morning network television and the syndicated Disney Afternoon lineup) receives the same kind of DVD treatment that those which came before it have. Poor video quality, an incomplete cut of the pilot, no bonus features, and a questionable episode order all serve to dampen the proceedings. Still, revisiting the inventive, entertaining show finds plenty of pay-off, especially if the lack of a deadline allows you to space out the more than ten hours of content. Let's get dangerous with our complete and thorough DVD review.

August 29, 2006 - Tuesday's here and with it, more Disney DVDs than have sprung from any other week this summer! Now online: our two-page critique of "TaleSpin" Volume 1. This half-hour cartoon series, which was part of the initial Disney Channel Afternoon lineup in 1990, makes it digital debut in a 3-disc, 27-episode set. Disney's then-established TV Animation department took classic character reinvention to new heights when it cast The Jungle Book's Baloo as a bush pilot in the vague coastal setting of Cape Suzette. Entertaining adventures unfold involving Baloo's new boss and friends, a pair of his Jungle co-stars, pirates of the air, and others. The complete lack of bonus features and a syndicated version of the 4-part pilot knock off points, but the fun featured series, largely satisfying picture and sound, and a low price garner this one a solid recommendation. Check out our full review for a detailed analysis, episode synopses, and over 30 pictures from this much-anticipated box set.

UD reviewers are still at work on the new multi-disc sets bestowed upon "The Tick", and "Desperate Housewives." Look for these detailed reviews soon!

August 28, 2006 - Cover art has been posted for the two Disney DVD Game World titles Disney Princess Edition and Disney Dogs Edition.

August 27, 2006 - More new Disney DVD preorders have turned up at Amazon.com with substantial discounts: the two-disc line-launching Walt Disney's Legacy Collection sets True-Life Adventures, Volume 1: Wonders of the World, True-Life Adventures, Volume 2: Lands of Exploration, True-Life Adventures, Volume 3: Creatures of the Wild, True-Life Adventures, Volume 4: Nature's Mysteries; the Disney DVD Game World virtual board games Disney Princess Edition and Disney Dogs Edition; sitcom sets "The Golden Girls" The Complete Sixth Season and "Home Improvement" The Complete Fifth Season; shorts compilations Funny Factory with Goofy (Volume 3), Funny Factory with Huey, Dewey and Louie (Volume 4), and "Alias" The Complete Collection (Seasons 1-5). In addition, the recently-referenced High School Musical: Remix Edition will apparently hold two discs and arrive on the already-busy December 5th. As usual, a complete and detailed list of upcoming Disney DVDs can be found on our Coming Soon/Schedule page, and a graphical preview of the DVDs' artwork (including non-"Disney" branches and with preorder and press release links) can be found on our Upcoming Cover Art page.

Our newest DVD review looks at this week's latest direct-to-video sequel from DisneyToon Studios: Brother Bear 2. This sequel has the honor of following up the last Feature Animation release to qualify as a success (or, at least, not an outright failure), a movie both recent and imperfect enough to stay consistent to and not disappoint. Disappoint, it does not, nor does it surprise, but those who consider the brown bears Kenai and Koda worth spending more time with should find this sequel a "fair enough" successor. Like the film it houses, the DVD does not ascend past ordinary expectations, fulfilling the minimal requirement of a satisfactory presentation and two unexceptional little bonuses. Click for our complete and thorough critique.

August 26, 2006 - The UD Shop has a new look! Of course, it still has the same old features that make scouring the globe for Disney books, music, toys, and DVDs so easy and so fun. Visit the updated UD Shop.

August 25, 2006 - We have two new DVD reviews for you tonight. Mark Arnold makes his UD debut with a critique of Gus, the star-studded 1976 live action comedy about a mule who finds a place on a losing pro football team as an expert field goal kicker. While the movie clearly adheres to the formulas that Disney was fond of thirty years ago, it offers one of the studio's more entertaining works. Unfortunately, its DVD is mostly a dud, with a reformatted fullscreen transfer, and nary an extra. Read on...

In the second review, Michael Miller looks at Disney Learning Adventures: Winnie the Pooh - Shapes and Sizes, one of this month's preschooler-oriented DVD releases. Like its concurrent counterpart, this disc offers a brand new animated half-hour program featuring Pooh and friends - one which informs the youthful of particular concepts (shapes, sizes) while also entertaining and imparting less concrete values. Click here for the full review.

Next week brings more Disney DVDs than any other week this summer has, and several of the new releases are among the most anticipated on the studio's schedule. With review copies having been received extremely late, UD reviewers are working around the clock to cover all the new discs. We're aiming to bring you reviews of "TaleSpin" Volume 1 and Brother Bear 2 by the end of the weekend, as well as critiques of "Darkwing Duck" Volume 1 and "The Tick" vs. Season 1 by Tuesday, with the "extra juicy" "Desperate Housewives" The Complete Second Season to follow soon. Check back for those and more as we hope to close August and open September on high notes.

Disney has opened up an official website for Disney DVD Game World, the soon-to-be-launched virtual boardgame line which will initially boast The Disney Dogs and The Disney Princess Fantasy versions. The website includes playable demos of each disc, due December 5th.

Invincible is now playing in theaters. This PG-rated film, the latest in Disney's recent streak of sports dramas, tackles the inspirational true story of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender who became the oldest rookie in NFL history when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s. The movie, which has received mostly favorable reviews, is easily expected to claim the #1 spot at an otherwise slow box office experiencing its final weekend of the summer season.

Since first airing in January, High School Musical has shattered records and practically everyone's expectations, making it one of the Walt Disney Company's biggest success stories of 2006. Now, it looks like a DVD double-dip is in the works, mirroring the strategy taken for this Disney Channel Original Movie's soundtrack. In an interview with Video Business, Buena Vista Home Entertainment's North American general manager Lori MacPherson reveals that a "Remix Edition" of Musical is in the works for the fourth quarter.

More new Disney DVD preorders can be found at Amazon.com, each at 29% off or more: "DuckTales" Volume 2, "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" Volume 2, The Fox and the Hound 2, and Air Buddies.

August 24, 2006 - Amazon.com has made "Disney's Adventures of The Gummi Bears" Volume 1 (Seasons 1-3) available for preorder. With a 29% discount, the 3-disc set is selling for $24.99, which amounts to just $0.53 per episode. Click here to preorder Disney's first animated TV series. The e-tailer is also now accepting preorders for Disney's first two batches of Blu-ray discs, at $23.95 a piece: Dinosaur, Eight Below, Glory Road, and The Haunted Mansion. All four next generation releases will be in stores in the next two months.

August 23, 2006 - In the two months since Buena Vista Home Entertainment announced the upcoming release of two virtual board games that will launch a line called Disney DVD Game World, there's been nothing; no cover art, no preorder links, no further information. But that changes today, as we've just added eight newly-issued screencaps -- 4 from Disney Dogs Edition, 4 from Disney Princess Edition -- to the pair's press release page. Both discs are due on December 5.

An official press release has been issued for the November 7th DVD debut of the seventh and latest Disney/Pixar blockbuster, Cars. While the announcement reveals little new about the planned single-disc release (and it doesn't mention the Disney Channel Circle of Stars' "Route 66" music video, which has also been neglected in most other articles), it does confirm other bonus features and specs that have been floating around for close to a month now. Click to read it.

Walt Disney's Legacy Collection: Wave 1 - True-Life Adventures -- click for larger view.

We've snagged a first look at concept artwork for the slick packaging of the True-Life Adventures sets which will be introducing the world (well, the US, Canada, and importers) to Walt Disney's Legacy Collection on December 5. Click here or on the thumbnail above for a larger view of the first four volume's designs. They appear to be just what the doctor ordered for collectors of vintage Disney fare who have been dealt eight months of very little since last year's Treasures.

August 22, 2006 - In UD's latest DVD review, Albert Gutierrez critiques Baby's Favorite Places: First Words - Around Town, the 21st volume in the Baby Einstein line. This 34-minute disc takes toddlers around their neighborhood introducing them to such concepts as "mailbox" and "picnic" through the usual blend of puppets, animation, and live action. To spice things up, Oscar winner Marlee Matlin returns to help young ones grasp sign language. Click here for the full review.

Disney has released a brief featurette on the true story of Vince Papale, whose rise from season ticket holder to pro football player is dramatized in Invincible. Choose your format to view: QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Flash, iTunes. Invincible opens in theaters this Friday. More on the movie...

Eight menu screens from "Darkwing Duck" Volume 1 have been posted, between our Guide to August DVDs and the press release. The 3-disc, 27-episode set will be released one week from today.

August 21, 2006 - Retailers have been told to expect four volumes of Walt Disney's True-Life Adventures on December 5th, as the debut wave of a new line called Walt Disney's Legacy Collection. With featured content ranging from just under to well over 300 minutes, each volume will be a two-disc set carrying a $32.99 suggested retail price, much like the annual Walt Disney Treasures. UPDATE: UD has learned the contents of these sets. Read on...

Volume 1: Wonders of the World will hold the Oscar-winning 1958 feature White Wilderness; the Oscar-winning two-reel (roughly 30 minute) shorts Seal Island (1948), Beaver Valley (1950), Nature's Half Acre (1951), and Water Birds (1952); plus Nature's Strangest Creatures (1959) and more.

Volume 2: Lands of Exploration will contain a pair of Best Documentary Oscar winners in The Living Desert (1953) and The Vanishing Prairie (1954), in addition to Prowlers of the Everglades (1953), Islands of the Sea (1960), and the anthology episodes "Behind the True-Life Cameras" (1955), "The Crisler Story" (1957) and "Yellowstone Story" (1957).

Volume 3: Creatures of the Wild boasts feature-length flicks The African Lion (1955) and Jungle Cat (1960), as well as 1952's Olympic Elk, 1953's Bear Country, 1955's Emperor Penguins, and the "Disneyland" installment "Cameras in Africa" (1954) and more.

Finally, Volume 4: Nature's Mysteries will serve up 1956's feature-length Secrets of Life and the lone True-Life Fantasy Perri (1957), as well as Mysteries of the Deep (1959) and the anthology episodes "Searching for Nature's Mysteries" (1956) and "Adventure in Wildwood Heart" (1957).

Each set will include collectible packaging, an exclusive in-package keepsake, and introductions by Roy Disney. Like the Treasures, these will be available in limited quantities. It is not yet clear if this scheduling means the four titles expected to comprise Wave 6 of the Walt Disney Treasures are being delayed or if Buena Vista Home Entertainment is planning one mammoth release date for the first Tuesday of December, which is already supposed to bring the year's top-grossing film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and two virtual board game DVDs, and may now prove especially costly for fans of Walt-era fare.

Our Complete Upcoming Release Schedule has been updated to note non-specific specs on the two Dead Man's Chest DVD versions, a new edition name for Wendy Wu, information on November's Funny Factory DVDs, and new listings for a pair of Disney Learning Adventures and another Little Einsteins compilation. Check it all out.

August 20, 2006 - Many fans of today's Disney Channel original series have voiced displeasure with the way that, in this domain, Disney has not graduated from the VHS mindset of releasing compilations of a few random episodes. Furthermore, the only show from this decade that the company has treated to a chronological DVD set in Region 1 -- "Lizzie McGuire" -- has gone nearly two years without a follow-up release. Next month, "Lizzie" and its popular predecessor "Even Stevens" move to commercial syndication. Does that mean the two comedies are destined for more proper DVD treatment in the US? Probably not. Fortunately, not all parts of the world must wait for Disney to get with the times regarding TV-on-DVD. Last month in Australia (Region 4), Madman Entertainment released "Even Stevens" Season One, a 3-disc, 21-episode set which now sells for $49.95 AUD (about $38 USD). Even before that, complete box sets of "Lizzie" have been available in the the UK (R2), Australia (R4), and Spain (R2).

August 19, 2006 - High-res cover art has been posted for this November's new wave of Funny Factory DVDs.

Those who live in Canada or any other part of the world which isn't the United States of America have always been excluded from the Disney Movie Club. While that's fine with those who fear committment, it disappoints some international Disney fans who crave the savings and the Club-exclusive discs. Though many of these Club Premieres were released to DVD earlier (and in more satisfying fashion) outside of the US, some haven't. What makes this news-worthy is the fact that several of the Club-only DVDs have made their way to Amazon Marketplace, giving non-Club members in the US and abroad a chance to own some of these discs without buying other titles. The catch? You'll typically have to pay a bit more than what the Club sells them for. Check out the Marketplace listings for DuckTales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp, A Tiger Walks, Yellowstone Cubs, Geppetto, Jumping Ship, and the recently-reviewed The Bluegrass Special. It should be pointed out, however, that all 17 of the current exclusives (even last month's new batch) are now available to enroll with in the Club via the enticing 3-for-$1.99-each-plus-free shipping deal. Click here to join the DMC.

Last fall's Wal-Mart exclusive, The 3 Wise Men is finally receiving general release on October 8th, which is, oddly a Sunday. Amazon.com now has this 2D-animated film up for preorder at $13.99, a savings of 30% over the $19.99 list price. Click here for our review of this Spanish production.

A new UD forum post by Disney TV expert Bill Cotter reveals some of the contents of Your Host, Walt Disney, the much-anticipated collection of anthology series episodes expected in December's sixth wave of Walt Disney Treasures. In addition to "I Captured the King of the Leprechauns", the 1959 making-of episode which appeared on the Darby O'Gill and the Little People DVD, the tin will hold 1957's "The Fourth Anniversary Show" with Walt and the Mouseketeers, "Disneyland 10th Anniversary" (1965) hosted by Walt and the park's first ambassador Julie Reihm, and the long-thought-to-be-lost special "Kodak Presents Disneyland '59" featuring such celebrities as Clint Eastwood and Dennis Hopper in addition to a robust slate of Disney stars and Art Linkletter. More to be announced in the days and weeks ahead...

August 18, 2006 - Here's a cool scoop you won't find elsewhere... Our most reliable sources have confirmed what many have already suspected: that the colossal blockbuster of a sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will be walking the plank to DVD in early December. They've also informed us that two versions will be offered. No, it's not what you're thinking (well, maybe it is): like its predecessor, the best-selling Curse of the Black Pearl, there's nary a fullscreen version in sight for Dead Man's Chest. Instead, the $400 million-grossing adventure will be presented in 2.35:1 16x9-enhanced widescreen in both a single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition releases, with the latter expected to sell for a few dollars above standard price. More details should come in about a month, on the official announcement date, which should coincide with International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arr!

The Golden Girls: The Complete Sixth Season cover art -- click for a larger view Home Improvement: The Complete Fifth Season cover art -- click for a larger view

Upping the ante for a day already filled with TV on DVD sets, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has informed retailers that "The Golden Girls": The Complete Sixth Season (1990-91) and "Home Improvement": The Complete Fifth Season (1995-96) will both arrive in 3-disc box sets on November 14th. For extras, "Golden Girls" will include a conversation with the cast, while "Home Improvement" will hold only a Season 5 blooper reel. Each set will carry a $39.99 SRP, with an on-package offer for customers to save $10 when buying one of the sitcom's past season sets simultaneously. Click here for high-res "The Golden Girls" Season 6 and "Home Improvement" Season 5 cover art.

One of the other TV-on-DVD releases set due that mid-November Tuesday is "Disney's Adventures of The Gummi Bears" Volume 1, which has just been issued an official fact sheet.

Meanwhile, November 21st has been set as the release date for the two new Funny Factory DVDs we alerted you about yesterday. Both Funny Factory with Goofy (Volume 3) and Funny Factory with Huey, Dewey, and Louie (Volume 4) will adhere to the studio's preferred formula for short compilations: $14.99 list prices, FastPlay, 55ish-minute runtimes, and unspecified "limited time" availability.

August 17, 2006 - It's been over three months since Buena Vista Home Entertainment released a new DVD compilation of vintage Disney cartoon shorts and none are on the horizon through at least the beginning of November. Does this mean this recycling-heavy practice is being phased out? No. In fact, the sales on many of these low-priced discs have surpassed the deliberately-scarce alternative of Walt Disney Treasures. We've now learned of three compilations you can expect in the future. A Timeless Tales: Volume 4 is in the works, as are Funny Factory with Goofy (Volume 3) and Funny Factory with Huey, Dewey, and Louie Volume 4). Of course, the collectors-preferred line of Treasures is continuing. We're expecting official announcements and contents lists for this year's four two-disc collections -- The Complete Pluto, Volume 2, Your Host, Walt Disney, The Mickey Mouse Club Featuring The Hardy Boys and More Silly Symphonies -- any day now. Fans of Treasures content should also be glad to know that the standalone collection of Oscar-winning and nominated cartoon shorts reported earlier this year is still on the slate for some time in the future. This set is currently being called Disney's Acclaimed Short Film Collection and does not yet have a release date attached.

August 16, 2006 - A practice carried over from the days of videocassettes, the price cut is a popular way for studios to make their currently-available DVDs more appealing to those who haven't yet purchased them. Such a practice, however, raises questions: "Should I buy now or later?", "How much do I want this?", "What will be getting a price drop and when?"... Well, you're on your own answering the first two, but UD is here to help you with the third. We've just updated our Disney and Buena Vista DVDs Price Cuts thread to reflect the temporary and permanent price reductions planned through January 2007. Among those getting discounted are recent big screen releases, two batches of "Power Rangers" compilations, and a handful of multi-disc special editions. Furthermore, in a move that has long seemed inevitable, Buena Vista's 32 titles in the UMD (Universal Media Disc) format for PlayStation Portable will have their list prices drastically slashed from $29.99 and $19.99 to $14.99 and $9.99. Check out the Price Drops Thread for the complete list (including drops recently gone into effect), with purchase and review links for all.

Recent Disney DVD and CD Reviews:
The Bluegrass Special (Disney Movie Club Exclusive) - This 1977 installment of "The Wonderful World of Disney" makes for a light and unusual disc on its own. The 48-minute tale involves Penny, a teenaged girl determined to tame an unruly horse and become a jockey against convention. Like other DMC premieres, this one offers a mediocre presentation and no bonuses whatsoever (despite what was announced). Even the thrill of owning something not available in stores comes at a tough-to-justify price.
Disney Learning Adventures: Winnie the Pooh - Wonderful Word Adventure - After several delays, this tot-tailored disc steers the series back to originality, with all-new animation taking Milne's colorful characters (as well as those in the Pre-K to K demographic) on an obstacle course illustrating the concept of opposites.
"Under the Umbrella Tree" Volume 3 - Delivering five more episodes of the late-'80s/early-'90s Disney Channel staple, this installment holds a show with "near-universal appeal" which manages to "endear and endure" in the years since first airing. As an pleasant bonus, this independently-produced, online-exclusive disc boasts "remarkably satisfying" picture and fun new interstitials.
Kidnapped (Disney Movie Club Exclusive) - This 1960 adventure offered Walt Disney a second chance to bring a Robert Louis Stevenson novel to the screen, which he did with director Robert Stevenson and a cast including Peter Finch, James MacArthur, and Peter O'Toole. Neither that distinguished lineup nor the film's exciting nature get it much on DVD. While completely void of bonuses, this Club-exclusive disc does get a passing grade in picture and sound.
