Race to Witch Mountain: Blu-ray and DVD Review

July 31, 2009 - Looking to make a professional comeback after a few rough years, Lindsay Lohan stars in Labor Pains, an independent comedy intended for theaters that instead made its debut last week on ABC Family. Lohan plays a young working woman who pretends she's pregnant to avoid firing.
Luke Kirby, Chris Parnell, and Cheryl Hines co-star in this PG-13 film. We review the DVD, out Tuesday from First Look Studios, which includes a making-of featurette. More...

July 29, 2009 - Our latest review covers next week's Blu-ray/DVD Combo of Race to Witch Mountain. This sci-fi/action flick plays freely with the facts of 1975's Escape to Witch Mountain, amounting to a loose remake. Dwayne Johnson is a Las Vegas cabbie who allies with two out-of-this-world youngsters (AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig) on the run from government agents and an intergalactic assassin. The film boasts a number of cameos of interest to Disney fans. Extras include over 20 minutes of deleted scenes, a bloopers reel, and the Blu-ray exclusive "Which Mountain?." Read our full article.

July 28, 2009 - Adapted from the global phenomenon that began with a manga and an anime series, Dragonball: Evolution comes to DVD today as one of the biggest flops and worst-reviewed films of the year. Kelvin Cedeno reviews the movie that centers on a teenager (Justin Chatwin) looking to find seven magical orbs before the evil Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) does.
This PG-rated fantasy co-stars Chow Yun-Fat and Phantom of the Opera's Emmy Rossum. Fox's "Z Edition" disc includes extended scenes, two Fox Movie Channel specials, a gag reel, a music video, and "Goku's Workout." Read on...

For information on today's other new DVD and Blu-ray releases, consult our DVDizzy.com Schedule for July 28th.

July 27, 2009 - We take an look at next week's The Tigger Movie: 2-Disc 10th Anniversary Edition. Coming a year early and with only a digital copy on its second disc, this rerelease doesn't really live up to the fanfare of its moniker. But the movie, Winnie the Pooh and company's first all-new theatrical feature film, remains a triumph true to the style of Disney's original Pooh featurettes. Besides the digital copy and the obligatory slipcover, the DVD adds two episodes of award-winning late-'80s/early-'90s cartoon "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" to its adequate slate of recycled extras. Read the full review.

July 25, 2009 - Our newest DVD review looks at "The Spectacular Spider-Man": The Complete First Season. This latest take on Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's iconic superhero looks at Peter Parker's life shortly after acquiring his powers, as he protects New York City from an assortment of supervillains while attending high school on the side. Developed by Victor Cook and Greg Weisman ("Gargoyles"), this animated series stays true to the characters and stories of Marvel Comics while operating in an exciting contemporary setting. Learn if it lives up to its title by reading our early DVD review. The 2-disc, 13-episode set hits stores on Tuesday, with two all-new featurettes.

July 23, 2009 - Like most of Hollywood, Disney embraces its fanboy demographic this week with a number of scheduled panels at San Diego's Comic-Con.

We've just posted a preview of Tron Legacy based on information the studio has let out on this 2010 sequel first announced one year ago. More...

July 20, 2009 - Revised cover art has been posted for A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa, which is now being called an Extended Edition. The 2008 holiday TV special comes to disc on September 29th.

July 19, 2009 - The press releases keep on coming with Disney's announcement of Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws. The ninth film in the Robert Vince-produced series and fourth since moving to talking puppies, this holiday outing comes straight to DVD and Blu-ray this November. The post includes a cast photo with CGI-face-replaced Santa Claus (played by "Cheers" funnyman George Wendt). More...

July 18, 2009 - We've just posted the full press release announcing the October 27th DVD/Blu-ray debut of Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure. The announcement details the plot of this second computer-animated film in the Disney Fairies franchise. It also quantifies the multi-platform success of its predecessor and formally confirms the development of a fifth film (expected in 2012) subtitled Race Through the Seasons. Read all about it.

July 17, 2009 - Although it's fallen out of 2009's top-grossing film spot, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot is still considered a rousing success by both established Trekkies and fans new to the universe. Today, Paramount announced details for the blockbuster's DVD and Blu-ray releases coming November 17th. We've posted the full thing: Star Trek DVD & Blu-ray press release.

July 16, 2009 - Our latest DVD review looks at Coraline, a stop motion fantasy adapted and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) from Neil Gaiman's book. The film tells of a girl (voiced by Dakota Fanning) who discovers a pleasant alternate reality through a door in the Victorian home to which her inattentive parents have moved. Universal's 2-Disc Collector's Edition serves up 2-D and 3-D versions of the film with four pairs of green/magenta glasses. Bonus features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, making-of and voice cast featurettes, and a digital copy. Read our full review.

Recent Disney DVD Reviews:
Princess Protection Program - The newest Disney Channel Original Movie stars Selena Gomez ("Wizards of Waverly Place") and Demi Lovato ("Sonny with a Chance") as mismatched teenagers (one ordinary, one royalty) who bond over high school drama. The movie debuts Friday night, but you'll need to wait for Tuesday for the extended cut, music video, and two featurettes of the Royal B.F.F. Extended Edition DVD.

Recent Non-Disney DVD Reviews:
Eat My Dust: Supercharged Edition - The film that enabled accomplished young actor Ron Howard to become a director, this low-budget, Roger Corman-produced 1976 comedy stars Howard and Christopher Norris as two kids on the run from the law in a stolen racecar. The disc includes the trailer, an introduction by producer Corman, and a new retrospective.
The Intruder: Special Edition - This racially-charged 1962 drama holds the first leading film role of Star Trek's William Shatner. He plays an outsider who single-handedly turns a southern town against school integration. The 2007 disc catches up with Shatner and notorious director/producer Roger Corman in a retrospective featurette.
Peanuts 1960's Collection - Charlie Brown and Snoopy's first six animated specials come together for the first time in this 2-disc set that includes holiday favorites A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and three half-hour shorts unavailable elsewhere. The DVD also holds a new 37-minute documentary on the series' jazz composer Vince Guaraldi.
