June 15, 2006 - Disney has formally announced The Wild, the $35 million-grossing computer-animated comedy/adventure which, as was widely noticed, bore a striking resemblance to DreamWorks' 2005 film Madagascar. This September 12th release will contain the handful of supplements we told you about last week, as these 3 menus confirm.

Another year, another "Power Rangers" series! In his first UD review, Albert Gutierrez critiques the recently-released compilation DVD "Power Rangers Mystic Force" Volume 1: Broken Spell. This 14th installment of the long-running boy-oriented franchise finds a quintet of small town teenagers summoned to do battle with baddies of a dark magic dimension. Unlike past Power Rangers compilations, this disc holds just a trio of episodes (the incarnation's first three) and curiously includes only one "S.P.D."/"DinoThunder" crossover episode as a bonus. More...

Ever since "Boy Meets World": The Complete Fourth Season was scheduled for a January 2006 DVD release and then suddenly, inexplicably pulled (along with the Disney-distributed series "Beggars and Choosers" and "Once & Again"), fans have clamored to find out when it will be coming. Buena Vista Home Entertainment has long remained mum on the subject, merely stating that it wasn't on the schedule for the near-future. Now, that "when" seems to have turned to an "if", based on a new article by Home Media Retailing on TV show season sets that do not sell enough copies to justify future season releases. With regards to "Boy Meets World", the article cites that "Season Two sales were off from the first set by just 12%", but that Season Three sales fell 39% from Season Two, leading the studio to scrap its Season 4 plans. There are a lot of other factors that go unmentioned in the article (1. Seasons 1 and 2 boasted audio and video commentaries, while Season 3 offered only a trivia game. 2. Season 2 was bolstered by sharing shelf space with Season 1 sets of hit Touchstone sitcoms "Home Improvement" and "The Golden Girls", while Season 3 had only the cancelled hour-long high school dramedy "Life as We Know It" as support), but in any event, this news leads us to not expect a Season 4 DVD anytime soon. As the statistics transparently suggest, the only way fans can hope for box sets of the TGIF sitcom's final four seasons is to buy any prior set they haven't already and encourage other fans to do the same. While the article discusses a few other shows, such as "Everwood" and "Who's The Boss?", no mention is made of "Lizzie McGuire" or "Sweet Valley High", two other BVHE-owned series which have not seen follow-up DVD releases and are suspected to have underperformed.

We've updated the Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition press release with six images of the DVD's menus and bonus features. The menus confirm that this much-anticipated two-disc re-release will include the following: an audio commentary, a music video of "Kiss the Girl" performed by High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale, Disney Song Selection (on-screen lyrics and song-only playback), a musical sneak peek at upcoming direct-to-video prequel The Little Mermaid III, Alan Menken's original demo of the deleted song "Silence is Golden", "DisneyPedia: Life Under the Sea", and the Disney Imagineer-spawned virtual ride "Under the Sea Adventure" with two ways to experience it and a featurette on the abandoned attraction which inspired it. Click here to view the pictures.

A bonus features menu has been posted for Brother Bear 2.

June 14, 2006 - With Cars currently the most talked-about film worldwide, we look ahead to Pixar Animation Studios' eighth and next feature film, Ratatouille, which is just over a year away from reaching theaters. Our Upcoming Disney Movies page capsule has been upgraded to a full preview and now contains updated cast and crew information, four high-res stills from the trailer, and links to view/save that debut teaser.

June 12, 2006 - With the final numbers now in, Pixar's Cars earned just a shade over $60 million in its first three days of release. While that makes the animated automobile flick the year's fourth biggest opener and Disney's second highest-grossing film of 2006 thus far, the opening weekend tally only puts Cars smack in the middle of Pixar's seven works in terms of opening performance, with it taking in just 85% of what the studio's two previous films brought in their first weekends in May 2003 and November 2004.

June 10, 2006 - As promised, we have put together an article highlighting some of the coolest and most worthwhile Cars tie-ins that can currently be found in stores. In "Disney/Pixar's Cars Revs Up Stores", we look at music, books, toys, and posters tied to Cars' theatrical release that range from the truly neat to the merely available. There are even tips on three different ways to score some Cars merchandise for free with small purchases you might already make. From the film soundtrack to Fast Talkin' Lightning McQueen, from The Art of Cars to The Essential Guide, there are reviews, pictures, links, and more. Click here for the full report.

It appears that Leroy & Stitch isn't going directly to video after all. The DVD of the feature-length conclusion to "Lilo & Stitch: The Series" is still set to hit stores on June 27th. But, four days earlier, on Friday June 23rd, the movie will debut on the Disney Channel at 8:00 Eastern/Pacific, preceded by two new "Lilo & Stitch" episodes at 7:00 ET/PT. Thanks to UD readers Austin and Belle for uncovering this news, which is now confirmed on and other listings websites. In addition, on June 26th, the movie will air again at 5:00 ET/PT, this time on digital cable's Toon Disney channel, where it will follow a five-hour marathon of "Lilo" episodes picked by viewers. While Leroy & Stitch likely won't ever be considered a "Disney Channel Original Movie", it will henceforth be classified as a TV movie on this site. But, Disney has proclaimed this a "one-time-only special event" (though their counting needs some work), so don't expect the ad nauseam reruns that true DCOMs usually receive.

Friday's box office estimates pit Cars' opening day gross at $19.3 million, a shade below the ~$20 M first day intakes of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Our forum is abuzz with discussions of the film. You can add your insights and reactions here.

June 9, 2006 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment has officially set September 12th as the release date for The Wild, the $35 million-grossing Disney-distributed, CORE-animated CGI film. The comic adventure will (naturally) be presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1; its bonus features will include deleted scenes, "Blunders & Bloopers: Eddie Izzard Unleashed", Everlife's "Real Wild Child" music video, and the featurette "Meet Colin: The Rock Hyrax." Plus, if preliminary packaging holds up, a slipcover.

BVHE has bumped up "Lost" The Complete Second Season (The Extended Experience) and "Commander in Chief": The Inaugural Edition - Part 2 from their announced October 3rd release date. The two Touchstone Television sets will now street on September 5, 2006, presumably to precede the former's third season premiere.

Cars, the seventh feature film from Pixar Animation Studios, opens in nearly 4,000 theaters nationwide today. Unlike the studio's six previous computer-animated works, this one has garnered less than unanimous critical praise, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 75% fresh. Regardless, the film is expect to burn rubber at the box office, with most estimating an opening weekend gross of $70 million (comparable to the initial tallies of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles). If you missed them last week, be sure to check out Aaron Wallace's movie review and report from the world premiere.

As has become Pixar tradition, buying a ticket to see Cars gives moviegoers a chance to see the debut teaser for Ratatouille (the studio's 8th film, due June 2007) and "One Man Band", the studio's latest comic short, Oscar-nominated earlier this year. But, you actually don't have to venture out to the cinema to see either. The Ratatouille teaser has been posted online (see the save-friendly links posted by "Hogi Bear"). And, like other Pixar shorts, "One Man Band" can now be purchased for $1.99 on iTunes.

Whether or not "One Man Band" makes it to this fall's inevitable Cars DVD release or is limited to the Apple-owned download service remains to be seen, but besides a Ratatouille sneak peek, one thing is certain to be included: a brand new short film called "Ghost Light." Following in the path of "Mike's New Car" and "Jack-Jack Attack", the 5-minute "Ghost Light" will feature characters from Cars and center on rusty tow truck Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy), who is frightened by the legend of a decapitated Indian's head said to float above and haunt Route 66. In addition, Home Media Retailing reports, via Cars' producer Darla Anderson, that the film's DVD "might" also include home movies from the filmmakers' tour of Route 66 and technical animation bloopers.

June 8, 2006 - Retailers have been told to expect the Disney-distributed CGI film The Wild to reach DVD on September 12th.

Our latest DVD review looks at this week's new Touchstone Television box set, "Home Improvement" The Complete Fourth Season. The family sitcom was again a major ratings force in 1994-95, while star Tim Allen and co-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas found success in other parts of the Disney studio. Season Four introduced a number of recurring characters to be a part of the Taylors' world and though it again takes some time for this season to hit its stride, the set includes some of the show's most memorable episodes. Video and audio are solid, the price is acceptable, but again, bonus features leave plenty to be desired. More...

Three new Easter Eggs (or "Dino Eggs", as they're called) have been unearthed on last month's box set "Dinosaurs" The Complete First and Second Seasons. See our updated review for details and access.

June 7, 2006 - While recently being reported as due this upcoming fall and previously expected last February and this summer, reliable sources have informed us that "The Muppet Show" Season 2 will not even be announced until 2007, so any possibility of the box set arriving by the end of this year seems to have been erased. Those same sources have told us that the long-delayed Secrets, Stories & Magic of the Happiest Place on Earth disc will now be announced in the fall, with release by the end of the year likely. Originally declared to hit stores eleven months ago, the Disneyland documentary-plus will probably follow up the theme park's 50th anniversary celebrations, which wrap up in early November. See UD's Upcoming Schedule for more information on these and other forthcoming Disney DVDs.

BVHE has confirmed that it is "The Tick vs. the Mole-Men", the 11th episode produced and aired, which will be missing from "The Tick" Season 1 DVD, due August 29th. The studio's official line is that there are creative issues preventing the episode's inclusions, but that it is hoped to be included in a future collection of the mid-'90s animated series.

Non-finalized cover art for "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse": Mickey Saves Santa and Other Mouseketales has been added to Upcoming DVD Art .

June 3, 2006 - While our full Dumbo: Big Top Edition remains on the way, we now have a related report for your reading pleasure. Through next Wednesday, the 65-year-old animated classic is back on the big screen at Disney's El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Last week, on its opening night, a discussion panel was held featuring veteran animator Eric Goldberg, legendary songwriter Richard Sherman, and film historian Miles Krueger. The trio recalled the simple, inexpensive film which helped save the Disney studio from bankruptcy after it endured losses on Pinocchio and Fantasia, both released the previous year. Pluto Region1 brings you an interesting overview of the night (with pictures) in Back on the Big Screen: Dumbo's Opening Night at El Capitan.

Genuine high-resolution cover art has been added for Twitches. The second highest-rated "DCOM" of the past four years (trailing only High School Musical), Twitches will arrive on DVD on September 5th, equipped with a behind-the-scenes featurette, an exclusive alternate ending, and an interactive game. The Incredibles received top honors at the 2nd Annual DVD Critics Awards held Wednesday night in California. The Pixar-animated blockbuster was also named Best Children's DVD of 2005, while Mulan II received "Best Nontheatrical DVD", and Touchstone's seven-disc set "Lost" The Complete First Season was awarded the Best TV DVD Release of 2005. See Home Media Retailing for information on other winners.

Last October, a direct-to-video film was released by Disney's Miramax Home Video branch which could not simply be viewed and reviewed. It had to be absorbed, researched, analyzed, and dissected. That film, Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows, the latest installment of Lego's computer-animated action saga, is now the subject of our latest DVD review. Like its two predecessors, this sequel/prequel delivers a tale of warring races via anthropomorphic Lego figures. Doesn't that sound like a formula for success?! Click here to read the full review.

June 1, 2006 - Aaron Wallace's pre-release review of Cars, the seventh Pixar film, has been posted here. While the critique does entirely avoid spoilers, it could serve to deflate high expectations based on the studio's flawless track record. Upon assessment of the type of comedy, the voice cast, the pacing and plotting, the auto flick feels "too much like a low-end rental after ten years of riding around in luxury class." Still, it boasts cutting-edge animation and the studio's fans will want to give it a fair shot all the same. More...

Recent Disney DVD Reviews:
Growing Up with Winnie the Pooh: It's Playtime with Pooh - Like the line's earlier discs, this DVD compiles episodes of "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh." It holds four installments, loses their original openings and adds a couple of tot-oriented puppet shows. With spotty picture quality, one measly game, and a sub-hour running time, the beloved TV series deserves far better treatment than this.
High School Musical: Encore Edition - The Disney Channel's surprise phenomenon boasts ecclecti musical tastes and contemporary charms. The disc scores points for serving up two versions of the film plus four brief but good bonuses, but loses some for excluding a widescreen presentation and other readily-available content. Related Report: High School Musical DVD Launch Party in Hollywood
It's a Small World of Fun! Volume 1 - Seven-cartoon disc takes you around the globe and includes the US debut of 2002's "Greivance of a Starmaker." With the majority of this 55-minute cartoon compilation having already appeared via the Treasures, video quality is mostly pleasing. Still, buying a DVD like this is tantamount to eating at McDonald's.
