<< Previous (Best Actor Predictions)
Best Director
Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant
Steven Spielberg, Bridge of Spies
Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight
David O. Russell, Joy
Next in line: Ridley Scott, The Martian; Todd Haynes, Carol; George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road; Adam McKay, The Big Short; John Crowley, Brooklyn; Ryan Coogler, Creed
Basically, here you just have to list the directors of the most serious Best Picture contenders, with the more established and esteemed directors rising to the top.
Best Screenplay
Spotlight
Bridge of Spies
Steve Jobs
The Hateful Eight
Brooklyn
Next in line: Carol, The Martian, Room, The Revenant, The Big Short, Joy, Trumbo
The Globes only have one screenplay category, which makes this a tough field to crack. Animation never features here, which rules out two potential Oscar screenplay contenders. But otherwise, you've got more than twice as many possibilities fighting for the same five slots. I could see myself only getting 2 nominees right here, and the Globes have never expanded this category.
Best Animated Feature
Inside Out
Anomalisa
The Peanuts Movie
Minions
The Good Dinosaur
Next in line: Hotel Transylvania 2, Shaun the Sheep Movie
I don't think the Globes would be square enough to ignore Charlie Kaufman's R-rated stop-motion film, even though it's unlike anything they've ever before nominated here. With the exception of 2010's The Illusionist, the Globes have always stuck with the mainstream and I don't see that changing this year.
Best Foreign Language Film
Son of Saul (Hungary)
Mustang (France)
The Second Mother (Brazil)
Labryinth of Lies (Germany)
Viva (Ireland)
Haven't seen any of these, so I'm just guessing based on buzz really and the Globes' list of eligible titles (which excludes a couple of movies perceived as contenders in the Oscars' own Foreign Language race).
Best Original Song
"See You Again", Furious 7
"One Kind of Love", Love & Mercy
"Til It Happens to You", The Hunting Ground
"Feel the Light", Home
"Love Me Like You Do", Fifty Shades of Grey
Next in line: "Writing's on the Wall", Spectre; "Flashlight", Pitch Perfect 2
In a year almost entirely devoid of musicals, none of these inspires much excitement or hope.
Best Original Score
The Hateful Eight
The Revenant
Inside Out
Steve Jobs
Carol
Next in line: Bridge of Spies
A difficult category to predict, especially from the Globes, who haven't displayed their tastes as clearly as the Oscar. At 87, Ennio Morricone is a living legend who seems due to get his due for his Hateful Eight score. But that's at the Oscars, where he's been nominated and lost five times (and received an honorary award in 2007). At the Globes, he won for 1986's The Mission and 1999's The Legend of 1900. It doesn't seem like the HFPA saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens in time to nominate John Williams' new score, but then again, that's more of an Oscar thing to do.
