Post by Tangled »

I'm bumping this thread because last time I posted I hadn't finished rewatching all of the movies (I had stopped around Jungle Book, so I did not include any movies between that and The Little Mermaid). Now, I'm done, and I have a fresh mind towards everything (all 55 of them). My opinions and preferences have changed quite a lot over the past year-and-a-half (I'm not even going to look at my prior list as I write this, so I'm making a game out of it). Mostly, though, I just wanted to make another list for personal reference.

1. Bambi
2. Hunchback of Notre Dame
3. Lilo and Stitch
4. Aladdin
5. Pinocchio
6. Beauty and the Beast
7. Zootopia (I'm probably just being caught up in the hype, but I just can't stop thinking about how good this movie is. The writing is some of Disney's finest, and it's one of the only Disney movies that I've actually felt compelled to seek out fanfiction for. This world and these characters deserve more exploration.)
8. Lady and the Tramp
9. The Jungle Book
10. Tarzan
11. Mulan
12. Wreck-it Ralph
13. The Lion King
14. Alice in Wonderland
15. Sleeping Beauty
16. Tangled
17. Hercules
18. Fantasia
19. Fantasia 2000
20. The Little Mermaid
21. Big Hero 6
22. The Emperor's New Groove
23. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
24. Frozen
25. The Princess and the Frog
26. The Great Mouse Detective
27. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
28. Cinderella
29. The Adventures of Ichabod and Toad
30. The Rescuers
31. The Rescuers Down Under
32. Winnie the Pooh (2011)
33. Meet the Robinsons
34. Peter Pan
35. The Sword in the Stone
36. Bolt
37. 101 Dalmatians
38. Pocahontas (I forgot how weirdly hollow the animation was. Like, the animators and writers cared more about looking "mature" than making the audience relate to the characters' emotions. Music's still amazing, though.)
39. The Fox and the Hound
40. Dumbo
41. Make Mine Music
42. Robin Hood
43. Melody Time
44. Treasure Planet
45. Oliver and Company
46. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (this is actually a guilty pleasure of mine)
47. Brother Bear
48. The Aristocats
49. The Black Cauldron
50. Saludos Amigos
51. Fun and Fancy Free
52. The Three Caballeros
53. Home on the Range
54. Chicken Little
55. Dinosaur

I don't think I've ever seen a more precise assessment of the issues I have with the movie.

Based half on my personal opinion about how much I like the film and also on things like commercial/critical success.

Films I consider great and I like/love:

1. Aladdin
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. Hunchback of Notre Dame (really flawed, but when it gets good, it gets really good. for me honestly the big problem is the uneven tone and the humor, the four main characters are fine by me. I think even keeping the gargoyles but making their humor a little more dark comedic/gallows humor would've worked better)
4. Bambi
5. Alice in Wonderland
6. Fantasia / Fantasia 2000
7. Sleeping Beauty
8. Lilo and Stitch
9. The Jungle Book
10. The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
11. The Great Mouse Detective
12. The Little Mermaid
13. Mulan
14. Pinocchio
15. Treasure Planet
16. Wreck It Ralph
17. Robin Hood
18. Lady and the Tramp
19. The Rescuers (normally I'd put this in the bad list, but I love the music and Bianca and Bernard's romance so that's why I love it, even though I kinda agree that the film is a little underwhelming)
20. The Three Caballeros
21. The Black Cauldron (really flawed, annoying bland characters and simple story, but I feel with some reworkings here and there in the writing it would've been a decent film. A lot of Disney films and fantasy stories are really cliched, so I don't get why this one is slammed with that criticism. the animation is pretty decent, all things considered)

Films I don't care much for, but consider them to be decent/have things In them I like

22. Hercules
23. The Lion King
24. Cinderella
25. Tangled
26. Frozen
27. 101 Dalmatians
28. Princess and the Frog
29. Tarzan
30. The Rescuers Down Under
31. Moana
32. Zootopia
33. The Sword in the Stone
34. Ichabod and Mr. Toad
35. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
36. Emperor's New Groove
37. Saludos Amigos (Boring, but i do like Latin American culture genuinely represented in a film for once, instead of being americanized ala Emperor's New Groove or mistaken for Mexico or turned into maids or drug lords)
38. Winnie the Pooh 2011
39. Pocahontas ( a film I consider pretty bad, but the music and the colors saves it)
40. Dumbo

Just bad films :D
41. Aristocats
42. Brother Bear
43. Atlantis
44. Fox and the Hound
45. Oliver and Company
46. Melody Time
47. Big Hero 6
48. Fun and Fancy Free
49. Make Mine Music
50. Peter Pan
51. Chicken Little
52. Meet the Robinsons
53. Home on the Range
54. Bolt
55. Dinosaur

I finally saw Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. I thought Chicken Little was funny, but so different from anything Disney had done until then. Meanwhile, Meet the Robinsons was pretty forgettable, but the animation was gorgeous. I also revisited Home on the Range. I don't understand why the Disney fandom hates it so much. Sure, it's not memorable or groundbreaking, but the character designs and the music and the story were pretty great. :) I remember, back in 2004, when it came out, there were lots of movie posters all over the place, and I loved the character designs, especially Buck, the horse. I thought the jokes were clever, and there were moments when I laughed out loud.

I like HOTR, too. It's not my favorite film, but I do really enjoy it. Whenever I watch it, my husband's always like, "Ugh, Home on the Range, what a bad movie," but then he ends up watching some of it and he really seems to enjoy it, or at least he's captivated by it. So I don't know how much the reputation of the film plays into some people's perception of it. But also it does have slapstick and some humor that some people may not like, so I can understand why some people don't like it much.

2. Aladdin
3. Lilo and Stitch
4. Cinderella
5. Beauty and the Beast
6. Sleeping Beauty
7. The Emperors New Groove
8.ย Lady and the Tramp

Great:
9. Mulan
10. Princess and the Frog
11. Hercules
12. Hunchback of Notre Dame
13. Snow White and the 7 Dwarfsย
14. Tarzan
15. Pinocchio
16. Bambi
17. Dumbo
18. Frozen
19. Pocahontas
20. Brother Bear
21.The Fox and the Hound
22. Oliver and Company
23. Black Cauldronย

Charming/loveable:
24. Atlantis
25. The Jungle Book
26. Tangled
27. The great Mouse Detectiveย ย ย
28. The Rescuers
29. Aristocatsย ย
30. Robin Hood
31. Sword in Stone
32. Alice in Wonderland
33. 101 Dalmatians
34. Moana
35. Peter Pan
36. Fun, and Fancy Free

Good/Fine:
37. Big Hero 6: it has its flaws, but its really entertaining and the characters complete each other so well (although they literally remind me of the 6teen group). Still, a bunch of likeable characters.
38. Meet the Robinsons
39. Zootopia
40. Treasure Planet: technically a really good movie but i just cant stand the sci-fi aspect, same reason why i cant get into Star Wars, it kills the timelessness and my joy to get into the movie. Sorry :frog:
41. The Lion King
42. Bolt
43. The Rescuers Down Under
44. Home on the Range
45. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad
46. The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

49. Raya and the Last Dragon
50. Winnie the Pooh

Meh:
51. Chicken Little
52. Make Mine Music
53. Dinosaur
54. Fantasia 2000
55. Fantasia
56. Melody Time
57. The 3 Caballeros
58. Saludos Amigos

Horrible
59. Frozen 2
60. Wish
61. Ralph Breaks the Internet
62. Strange World: it tried so hard to exploit the growing popularity of their earlier SciFi flicks Atlantis and TreasurePlanet, through the weird Coronavirus looking Sidekick that is the ugly uncharming version of the adorable Morph and more. Atlantis and Treasure Planet shined through their great likeable characters, while the selling point here was the "Strange World". Wow. It was straight up boring and the main cast was designed really undisney and ugly. It has no likeable qualities at all. A worthy flop. An uninspired attempt to create an alternative for the princess franshise. I bet the animators cried themselves to sleep when they were put for that film.

I will only write something about the top 20, i would be even more bonkerssss if id write a Paragraph over 60 times:
*EDIT: maybe only for the top 8 im lazy

1.The Little Mermaid: Everything about it makes it into a perfect fairytale adaptation. The great, emotional songs, the curious and playful heroine which has a dream and takes risks, a great threatening villain, entertaining and important sidekicks, one of the best climaxes and beautiful Animation.ย Classic.

2. Aladdin It feels more vibrant and colorful than tLM, a hint more of a character driven plot with slightly better developed protagonists, and bit more beautiful Animation, and its comedic nature is appreciated, although what it lacks are the pinnacle songs and score that make TLM a phenomenon, and the romance is the B Plot for Aladdins journey of self worth. I personally love his character more than Ariels, but with its amount of humour and sass (which still makes it a vibrant experience),ย  you cant beat a classical, traditional and grand musical fairytale adaptation that is tLM.

3. Lilo and Stitch It has everything a Disney Classic needs: an unique character with a want, an interesting plot, a bit of comedy and most Importantly a big chunk of Heart. Lilo is such a flawed and random character which makes her even more real and loveable. It has so many characters that I love, like Nani, Pleakley, Jamba, David, Bobo and of course Stitch. Stitch and Lilos relationship is the catalist here, but watching Lilo and Nani act like real siblings is also wholesome. Every character is really interesting and shape the plot. And the Heart of the story "Ohana" gets across perfectly. It lacks the iconic scores of BatB, Aladdin or Mermaid, and songs of course, but it doesnt really need those. It all works perfectly and I love Lilo and Stitchs random moments. Also the character designs are so unique!

4. Cinderella. Sometimes I wonder if its right to put Cinderella high at 4, but I just need to remember its wonderful title character and her journey. Cinderella is far from the grand, epic , broadway styled fairytale musical with great songs like BatB, Mermaid or Aladdin, but it has a calm, and elegant charm to it. Its more grounded and her journey is imo way more captivating than of other fairytale protagonists. Also Tremaine is one of the most intimitating villains ever! No magic powers needed! The Transformation scene is beautiful and Cinderellas unfair situation and her hopeful, optimistic attitude is what sells it for me, her emotional journey. She doesnt want much, only a fun night out and all the hard work and hope it all pays off at the end. So captivating. Everybody loves a Cinderella story!

5. Beauty and the Beast has wonderful songs, an iconic score and loveable protagonists. The sidekicks are great, Beast has his great arc and overall its the best way how the fairytale probably could have been adaptated or updated.ย  Gaston might not feel that threatening like other Disney Villains, but the movie shines anyway through Belles and Beasts Relationship. Beast is so flawed with his short temper and thats what makes him so likeable, especially since he develops into something better throughout the movie. I love Belles introverted persona, her want for more and her escape in books makes her unique besides other protagonists, however she lacks a character shift. Technically Ariel also has no clear growth, but she still gets away with it, as there arent other prominent figures besides Triton that change or have a growth to compare her with, however you notice it here when you have Belle besides the changing Beast. Still, a fantastic classic!!!

6. Sleeping Beauty It has the most beautiful Animation in history (L&tT comes close). It is this grand, epic fairytale, which has wonderful and loveable, flawed characters like the Fairies, a prince with charm, a grand threatening villain and a classic love story. Everything about it is so exaggerated and theatrical, which is one of its greatest strenghts, but also partly its weakness, as it lacks the heart or emotional character driven narrative from the movies above. But the Fairies really own the movie and their interactions are my favourites! Its so fun to see them fight and argue throughout the movie! It still feels like so much fun and I love to rewatch this one!

7. The Emperors New Groove Another case where I love the whole cast of main characters. Kuzco is a really entertaining, funny and loveable protagonist, Yzma is a great, comedic, melodramatic villain and Kronk is one of the best sidekicks ever! The tone of the Film is so unique and outstanding in the canon, and besides of being the funniest movie of WDAS, it still has heart, not as much as Lilo and Stitch for example, but still great and i wouldnt change anything about it. Comedy perfection.

8. Lady and the Tramp It is the most calm and grounded movie Disney has ever made! It feels so romantic, alluring and thats it greatest charm. The characters are so loveable, and Lady and Tramps chemistry is so elegant and believable. And the Bella notte sequence is one of my favourites of all time, maybe on tie with Cinderellas Fairygodmother arriving. Everything here works perfectly.
My favourite Disney songs:

By nature of the subjects, a lot of this ranking comes down to my emotional response, but my emotional response is also pretty tightly knit with how I think the film works as a vessel of filmmaking.

OLYMPUS
1. The Little Mermaid
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. The Jungle Book
4. Tangled
5. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
6. Zootopia
7. Frozen II

Approaching or touching perfection.

ROYALTY
8. The Lion King
9. Peter Pan
10. Aladdin
11. Wreck-it Ralph
12. Sleeping Beauty
13. Encanto
14. Lilo & Stitch
15. Cinderella
16. Tarzan
17. Frozen
18. Pinocchio
19. Bambi
20. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
21. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
22. Treasure Planet

Some of these have some issues (e.g. Hunchback's tone problem), but still really work. This is still the tier of "Why doesn't this movie have a Disneyland ride?"

COMMONERS WITH A HEART OF GOLD
23. Lady and the Tramp
24. Hercules
25. Moana
26. The Princess and the Frog
27. 101 Dalmatians
28. Fantasia 2000
29. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
30. Raya and the Last Dragon
31. Alice in Wonderland
32. Big Hero 6
33. Fantasia
34. Oliver & Company
35. Mulan
36. The Rescuers Down Under
37. Winnie the Pooh
38. The Emperor's New Groove
39. Brother Bear
40. Meet the Robinsons
41. The Great Mouse Detective
42. Pocahontas
43. Dumbo
44. The Rescuers
45. Robin Hood

Most of the players from Disney's transitional periods feature in here, as well as some of the softer hitters from their high-periods. I genuinely like and refer to these films. My general assessment is that they all accomplish something really impressive, but still have some story issues that needed to get ironed out.

JUST COMMONERS
46. Strange World
47. The Aristocats
48. WISH
49. The Fox & the Hound
50. Fun and Fancy Free
51. The Black Cauldron
52. The Sword in the Stone
53. Dinosaur

These guys bring SOMETHING to the table, even if it just technical prowess or interesting technique, but are either very flawed in my book, or they're just boring (or sometimes both.)

TARTARUS
54. Ralph Breaks the Internet
55. Home on the Range
56. Chicken Little

Cast them back into the pit!

Never Seen/Can't Remember
57. Bolt
58. Saludos Amigos
59. Make Mine Music
60. Melody Time
61. The Three Caballeros
62. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Crane

I've actually only seen Bolt one time when it came out some fifteen years ago, same with most of the package films.
