Iconic Objects in Disney Films (List)

Post by SWillie! »

Helloooo... so talking in the Cinderella thread about the Cinderella steelbook and how I think it would probably feature the iconic slipper on the front just like Snow White had the iconic apple got me thinking about all of the well-known, "iconic" objects in each of the films. Seeing as how I love lists, I think it'd be interesting to go through and list which objects from each film really embody that film. Something that isn't a character (in most cases)... The slipper, the apple, the magic feather, the rose, etc... In a situation where a movie doesn't necessarily have a "THE" object, then make one up that you think embodies that movie! Like a bow and arrow for Robin Hood, for example. So pick your favorite movie and why you think that image best represents that movie. I'll keep the list updated as we go.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - The Apple
Pinocchio - Wishing Star
Fantasia - Sorceror's Hat
Dumbo - Magic Feather
Bambi
Saludos Amigos
The Three Caballeros
Make Mine Music

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Besides the apple, I would also consider the magic mirror to be an iconic item from the movie. It represents an inward reflection on one's soul, particularly accentuating that beauty is only skin deep.

The Little Mermaid

I think Ariel's voice is an iconic item. Much of the story revolves around her ability to sing beautifully, as well as her desire to give up one of her greatest talents for something she cares deeply about.

Mulan

The sword. Since the sword is universally seen as a phallic symbol, it portrays Mulan giving up traditional femininity and embracing something traditionally out of her reach because of her gender.

Bambi - The butterfly that landed on his tail? It's a fairly common thing to see for some Bambi merchandise.

Alice In Wonderland - The 'Drink Me' bottle? A White Rose with dripping red paint?

Peter Pan - Captain Hook's hook?

Sleeping Beauty - Spinning wheel

The Rescuers - The diamond?

Black Cauldron - The cauldron? :P

Little Mermaid - The seashell with Ariel's voice in it.

Rescuers Down Under - Eagle's feather?

Aladdin - The lamp

Emperors New Groove - Llama potion

Atlantis - Atlantean crystal

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Along those same line, you could say her Geisha fan is very symbolic. She rejects it early on in the film, but yet, it ends up being the weapon she ultimately defeats Shun Yu with.

Memory Scanner would be a better Meet the Robinsons object. It's the core of the entire plot.

Not to mention the fact that the men were able to defeat the Huns while being dressed up as women. It's one of those movies which shows how femininity can itself be very empowering.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Yes, the apple, for Disney's Snow White I think the heart box almost seems more iconic to me.
Pinocchio - the star (I guess... I don't love that choice, but I can't think of anything else)
Fantasia - Sorceror's Hat (it's gotta bit this one)
Dumbo - Magic Feather or Casey Jr. the Circus Train
Bambi - Not really any objects in this movie, but whenever I was growing up, Bambi was always pictured looking at the butterfly on his tail. Even toys came with that Butterfly on his tail. Besides that, I would think somehow the unseen gun or the gunshot are very iconic...
Saludos Amigos - I would pick Pedro the airplane's mail bag or the letters within
The Three Caballeros - Sombreros or the big birthday present? Or probably that magic carpet sarape the most.
Make Mine Music - Peter's pop gun, or music notes/pages...
Fun and Fancy Free - A Unicycle or the Harp, or the key. Even party hats.
Melody Time - I would expect Johnny Appleseed's pot hat, bible, and sack, or music notes again, or anything cowboy related for Pecos Bill.
Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad - The books with the title characters, or the motor car and pumpkin head.
Cinderella - Slipper ('nuff said)
Alice in Wonderland - Hatter's hat, though almost anything from this movie is so unusual that it could work. Bread and Butterflies? Little bottles that say "Drink Me". You know what you're gonna see with any clues like that.
Peter Pan - I always think of Peter's hat.
Lady and the Tramp - a plate of spaghetti? Or Scamp, ha. Oh, the hat box lady was in as a pup.
Sleeping Beauty - The Spinning Wheel
101 Dalmatians - Kanine Krunchies, Cruella's cig and holder, a fur coat... spots.
The Sword in the Stone - The Sword in the Stone
The Jungle Book - bananas? Coconuts? Fire? Jungle trees/plants? The book itself
The Aristocats - Musical instruments? Scat Cat's hat? A basket? I haven't seen this one recently enough.
Robin Hood - An arrow, Robin's hat, gold coins or a sack of them.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Honey Pot
The Rescuers - A message in a bottle
The Fox and the Hound - a shotgun, a barrel dog house, Amos's hat
The Black Cauldron - the cauldron
The Great Mouse Detective - a magnifying glass, basil's hat
Oliver & Company - the 5th avenue collar, sunglasses, Sausages linked together
The Little Mermaid - the dinglehopper (fork)
The Rescuers Down Under - a golden feather
Beauty and the Beast - The Rose
Aladdin - the lamp
The Lion King - Rafiki's staff... or edible bugs, also the Simba painting Rafiki did
Pocahontas - Haven't seen this in a while. She had a special necklace, right? A compass could work too? Leaves blowing
The Hunchback of Notre Dame - the king of fools crown and scepter
Hercules - Any Herc merchandise (wasn't there a water bottle or something?)
Mulan - her fan, or her helmet
Tarzan - a spear or the baboon sketch
Fantasia 2000 - Maybe the toy soldier and ballerina...
The Emperor's New Groove
Atlantis: The Lost Empire - barely remember, was there a crystal necklace?
Lilo & Stitch - surf board or anything Hawaiian or Elvis related, or one of their space guns, which were very unique
Treasure Planet - the map

Skipped the other stuff because I haven't seen it ENOUGH, and also, I'm tired.

Exactly! Boy, talking about all of this almost makes me want to right an essay about it! "Mulan" has so many themes and sub-themes to it. Such a great film. :D

Okay, places, animals, and elements (wind, fire, earth, water) are not OBJECTS people...

I came here to pick either objects that I think are better because they're actual objects or ones that tell the story more. That means some of these may not exactly be about memorability.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The magic mirror. Why: Because not only did it start the whole story, it continued to move the story forward, and lead to that apple.

Pinocchio: I might choose the Blue Fairy's wand over the wishing star because I think it's more of an object and because stars are in so many Disney movies. But if not, then the star. The wand represents the same thing though.

Bambi: Stop choosing animals and locations! It should be a drop of rain. If you want, it can be a leaf with a drop of rain on it/falling from it. Why: "Little April Showers", and the rain stops the climactic fire.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad: the flaming pumpkin. Why: Because that is the most iconic thing out of the whole movie, no matter how fun Mr. Toad's story was.

Cinderella: The magic wand. Why: Oh, the slipper's the best choice and has more to do with the story, I'm just on a magic wand kick and I like uniformity and it is very important to the story and there is even a focus on it being lost and Cinderella knowing her fairy godmother by it.

Alice in Wonderland: the door and doorknob. Why: Your entry into the story, your entry out. And yes, I know this time its a character but also an object at the same time! But the door part isn't a character...

Peter Pan: The ship cloud. Why: clouds are everywhere in this film, and this particular object kind of represents what the story's about when you see the ending.

Lady and the Tramp: Lady's collar. Why: Besides making you know its about dogs, it's extremely important, it stands for what her owners give her, what she loses, what Tramp gets later. But the spaghetti dinner is a perfect other choice because it represents the love that is central to the story and the most iconic scene.

Sleeping Beauty: The spinning wheel may be the best choice but my other pick is Aurora's cradle. Why: it starts the story and all its problems, and represents sleeping.

101 Dalmatians: Either the basket of puppies or the newspaper about them. Why: represents what happens in the story. More memorable one: Cruella's car. Why: At least it has to do with finding the puppies.

The Sword in the Stone: Merlin's wand. Why: It's so important to the story about teaching Arthur...and it's less obvious.

The Jungle Book: A BRANCH with fire on it. Why: It specifically what Mowgli used, and it was what the animals wanted, were afraid of, what made him a man to return to his village.

The AristoCats: Probably has to be that basket. Why: No other memorable object that really has to do with the main point of the story.

Robin Hood: The bullseye with the arrow splitting the other arrow. Why: More specific than just a bow and arrow, how amazing this chaarcter is, wins Maid Marian's kiss, but it's also his entrapment, pretty climactic.

The Fox and the Hound: Yes the gun. Why: It is what connects yet divides the characters.

The Black Cauldron: Haha, the sword! Why: Important to the main character, and less obvious.

The Great Mouse Detective: Please stop picking Big Ben which was a place and was also kinda iconic in Peter Pan. A magnifying glass or...the queen robot? Wish I remembered more.

Oliver & Company: Oliver's collar or the box he came from. Why: Fairly important or having to do with the story, and nothing better I remember.

The Little Mermaid: A fork doesn't evoke enough of this film. Either the shell with Ariel's voice or Eric's statue. Runner-up is that dancing music box. Or the dinglehopper with the knife and spoon in the candelabra.

Beauty and the Beast: Yea the rose is the best choice but to be less obvious I would pick the painting of the prince that is ripped. Yes. Awesome choice I know. Runner-up is the magic mirror. All are really important and have to do with the story, including a whole reflection on oneself metaphor.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: The figure of Esmeralda. Or of Quasimodo. Why: It has more to do with what the main character wants, and he makes it himself.

Fantasia 2000: The circular steps that the conductor goes on. Why: They were in the first film just like the hat, but the hat went first. It unifies all the segments.

Dinasaur: Wasn't there some drawing or marking of some sort that had some special signifigance...can't remember...soooo boring...

The Emporer's New Groove: A potion bottle that could be any potion. Why: If it could be any potion it has to do with the ending, the whole conflict, and the resolution.

Lilo & Stitch: Elvis record in record player. Why: I think it has more special signifigance than the surf board from a non-main character.

Princess and the Frog: The AMULET that causes the bigger aspect of the story. Or just a lily pad. Hey, they used just lily pads a lot in advertising.

Rapunzel: THE MAGIC FLOWER. How did any of you forget? Why: I do NOT need to explain why.

Winnie the Pooh: The LETTER from Christopher Robin which is more specific to this movie than a honey pot which has more to do with the first movie.

If the elements can't be objects, shouldn't that cloud ship not count either?

Good picks everybody! I'll be updating the list when I get a chance.

Duster, just because they aren't "objects" that doesn't mean they shouldn't be picked. I really just meant an image that isn't a character that represents the film. You have some good picks though too.
