Sandro Cleuzo InterviewWriter/Director
Walt Disney Animation Studios
December 2005 – September 2008 (2 years 10 months)
Created, wrote and directed development of my original animated feature "Joe Jump". Project was shelved in 2008, when I decided to create elsewhere.

August 22, 2008Q: What was Joe Jump about, do you think they will ever bring it back?
Sandro Cleuzo: I do not know if I can say much about it because they might bring it back one day. Joe Jump was started by my friend Sam Levine who was a story artist at Disney and the voice of the 3 brothers who work for the villain in Home on the Range. He worked on it for a couple of years but it was cancelled.
It was about video games and I was helping to design some monsters for it. Joe Moshier did great designs on it and there was a team of about 10 people designing characters and locales. One of the monster that I designed was already been modeled in the computer and I was helping with it to make sure it was on model. I really loved working on it.

October 29, 2009Previously to Gentle Giant, I was appointed to join the Visual Development Team at Walt Disney Feature Animation to work with the director Sam Levine and character designer Joe Moshier on a film called Joe Jump. All the characters were developed in collaboration of drawing and modeling done in ZBrush 2.
We translated a more graphic character style into 3D, slightly leaning towards “Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom” or UPA cartoons, but with a heavy influence of Milt Kahl and Tom Oreb’s work. Unfortunately, the movie was cancelled after 4 years in development. I hope to eventually get permission to show some of the characters. There were cyborg lizards, heavily armored heroes and amazon women designed in a new style. A lot of projects I’ve worked on in my career haven’t been completed.
Disney Development

November 24, 2009I zipped around a couple of floors of the hat building today. And artists related:
"..."We're retooling King of the Elves ..."
"Joe Jump is back in work ..."
I hadn't heard that Mr. Jump had returned to the boards, but it isn't surprising; what I saw of the piece when it was in development looked pretty good.
What Made Joe Jump
http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2009/ ... -jump.html
May 14, 2010Remember how Bolt began life as something called "American Dog" from Chris Sanders? Well, that's the case with Joe Jump. There are enough elements of the story that survive, but the project has taken a different route that what Sam Levine intended. Joe Jump was his baby. He storyboarded his heart into this project with his writer and created something that was decidedly different that what Disney is known for. When Lasseter came in, all projects that weren't deemed "Disney" enough were cast aside. Levine knew that there was trouble even though John kept him and his writer on board for another year working on the project. After it started to languish he asked for a status. What should he do? Go on working on a project that there didn't seem to be a lot of love for, or move over to another project? He wasn't given a clear answer. And so Joe J. faded into the background. And Sam? I believe he moved on.
The new incarnation of the film bears elements to the original, but there is enough difference to consider it an entirely different film. Rich Moore, the film's new director is taking a different approach and Levin is nowhere to be seen, although his influence is felt.
Reschedules & Reboots
http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2010/ ... boots.html
October 14, 2010So now, instead of a late March/early April kind of release, the Pooh picture will come out on July 15, 2011. A few months later and a date on which it can build a better, more thought out marketing campaign. And that leaves almost two years before the next announced animated feature, "Reboot Ralph" scheduled for March 22, 2013. I got a lot of people asking if this was the formerly titled: "Joe Jump," and it is/was.
It has been known internally as the "Rich Moore" project. If you've noticed, I referred to it as "what used to be known as Joe Jump." It's been known for a while that the film would get a new title since the story bares little resemblance to what Joe actually was. Moore's take on the project is something that Lasseter liked and thought that having an outsider (like Brad Bird) come in and take over this project would provide some fresh perspective.
Scarlett Stahl: A Profile of Mike Gabriel

At present he is doing art direction on a huge new CG picture. It’s a whole new thing for Mike, who is working with a second new art director. The film, called Reboot Ralph, is set to come out in 2013 and is original and fresh, according to Mike, who is delighted to be working on it.

January 28, 2011Can you tell us more about Reboot Ralph, the next feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2013?
NG: I'm not the best person to talk about this. Frankly, I do not know much. I had the opportunity to see some pieces, it will be a very good film, but has gone through many changes, as did "Tangled". But I think it will be extremely funny.

April 4, 2011The challenges of Reboot Ralph are entirely different to those of Tangled. There are so many different styles of characters in that movie going from one video game to another to another to another that it’s going to be phenomenal. And I’m telling the team “It’s going to be a whole different challenge for you guys to stretch and expand and become much more versatile than you are right now, so there will be new ways in which we’re going to be growing”.
For my next project I have some ideas in my mind. I really believe that the fairy tale has to be a big part of the future of Disney animation for us to continue to grow and be strong and to be who we are.

April 23, 2011Walt Disney Studios announced today that it has pushed Monsters University — Disney-Pixar’s 3-D prequel to its 2001 hit Monsters Inc. — from its original Nov. 2, 2012 release to June 21, 2013. The Walt Disney Animation project Reboot Ralph will in turn take over the open release date, sliding from March 22, 2013 to Nov. 2, 2012.

May 19, 2011A staffer informed me that my speculation about Reboot Ralph going into production earlier because its release got moved up was wrong. I was told that Reboot's production schedule and production start dates (with attendant hiring) are pretty much the same as before.

Walt Disney Studios Introduces New CG Comedy "Wreck-it Ralph" for Nov. 12, 2012.

The Final NameSome of us are born to be bad, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, video-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph,” the story of an arcade game Bad Guy determined to prove he can be a Good Guy. Produced by Clark Spencer (“Lilo & Stitch,” “Bolt”) and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, the CG comedy adventure will hit theaters on Nov. 12, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
Says Moore, “I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: ‘isn't there more to life than the role I've been assigned?’ In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It's unlike anything anyone's seen before, and I'm thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios.”
Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

This feature began life as Joe Jump, back in the David Stainton days, then went into hibernation, then got revived (and revised) as Reboot Ralph and is now Wreck-It Ralph.
I'm informed that as of last week, there were three layout artists on the picture, and that the goal is to get an inventory of layouts before hiring a crew of animators.
July 8, 2011Anon#1: I hear they have different art directors for each of worlds since they couldn't stand working together.
Anon#2: I'm working on it and it's hilarious but it doesn't make much sense if you know video games. Sort of like watching characters hack into a computer on CSI. Funny 'cause they got it so wrong.
Anon#3: The Rich Moore, Andy Harkness & Mike Gabriel show - experts on things they know nothing about.

July 12, 2011Well, come 2012 we know that Rich Moore's "Wreck-It Ralph" will be the studios' animated offering. I hear that the project is very different from the last few films, but still shares the same, Disney heart. If some of the hysterically dark scenes I heard make it though the cut then this one will get an unusually rare, PG13 rating for the 52nd animated feature from Disney Animation. But we'll have to wait and see what final form it arrives in.

August 9, 2011Wreck-It Ralph is well underway, with 100 staffers (if my informants have their numbers right) now working on the picture.
In the Hat Building
http://animationguildblog.blogspot.com/ ... lding.html
Wreck-It Ralph is working its way through the production pipeline. There doesn't seem to be a lot of it in the lighting, texturing, final departments as yet, but a staffer who is working on Prep and Landing No. 2 says they'll start getting some of it soon. (Upstairs in the story department, there are still story revisions going on. There are always story tweaks.)
The film was previously set to be released on March 22, 2013, then it got moved up to November 2, 2012 and now is set to be released on November 12, 2012.
