well if this matters to anyone disney already have its first BLACK princess outside of the animated echelon and that is AIDA.

and as much as i love brandy and whitney in cinderella, i just thought it was a wrong match for the story. there's no castle for africans, arabians, chinese, malay only palaces and the fairies of these cultures r somewhat different. maybe in this view deeto shares my sentiment and thats what he's trying to tell. sorry if its not deeto.

but u guys, lets just wait and see ok..for all we know disney may have heard papibear's rants about a black princess and decides to make his day but with this bickering going about they might just scrape the idea and make the first Latin American princess instead. Cool

I understand what darth_detoo is saying.

I'm all for Disney creating a black princess. The only thing I'm worried about is that the plot of the film is going to be all about stressing the fact that the lead role is black. I don't understand why the film can't be about a black character but still have a normal story that is aimed at all audiences.

A good example of how a movie or television show with an all-black cast should be is The Cosby Show. The show is entertaining for everyone because it deals with everyday people living their lives just like the rest of us. None of the characters run around pointing out that they're black, they're normal people who don't give a rip about what your race is. It's fun for everyone!

Well, it's already become a big point of hype for the movie, which I think goes someway to backing up my concerns.

We didn't have this whole publicity hooplah when we had an Arabian princess in Aladdin, an Asian princess in Mulan or a Native American princess in Pocahontas - so why are they making such a big fuss about this?

Although, to be fair - it's probably the media that's making more of a fuss over it.

Well PapiBear, I think this is incredible. Don't you even dare deny that you're trying to start a fight. Mad Please don't be so irresponsible and immature!

And now, I guess I can finally say that I like the new title.

This movie sounds like it's going to be good. I wonder what the Prince's role will be in the movie (unless it's been mentioned already and I just missed it). One thing I'm wondering is about the villain what is his motive or what is he after? Hopefully he will be really evil and make up for some of the dud villains we've had recently.

I seriously don't see how you could have been offended by his post PapiBear. If he wouldn't have said that, than I would have. Are you not familiar with the term "political correctness"? That "chip on the shoulder" statement doesn't sound too off base either.

I completely agree with deeto. As cool as it would be to finally see a black, human, animated princess (gotta be specific here), doing it just for the sake of doing it is a terrible idea. The whole story line and setting sounds really forced and hokey to me too. Well here's hoping, but I fear this princess heroine will simply be lost in the dredges of a poorly conceived concept.

Sorry to bump this, but I read the Frog Princess article on Jim Hill Media in the afternoon. Its such a shame that there is so much controversy surrounding the movie way before a teaser is released! The movie could be a very lovely return to Disney Fairy Tales and Princess Tiana could be a wonderful addition to the princesses, no matter the color of her skin.

What annoys me the most about this is the hypocrisy. I mean, for years some people have complained that the minorities are poorly represented on the Disney films. But when they finally feature a minority story they complain that its too racist! They did it with Aladdin and Mulan, and Frog Princess looks to be next in line.

This makes me wonder, one of my dreams is to create a Latina Disney Princess (me being of Latin heritage and all). Will people complain that I am painting a negative portrait of Latinos simply because the story would focus on all the things that make Latinos unique?

I'm disappointed. I love the name Maddie and the liked the title of Frog Princess. I, too, think Princess and the Frog just doesn't sound original enough. Still, I'm very much looking forward to this movie and the New Orleans setting.

Well, for me the true test will come when it's time to incorporate this character into the parks; whether the character is a face character (real person) or a costume. The other princesses played by real people are, most of the time, white girls in heavy makeup, including Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan.

I should hope it would be a real person. I mean, it's not like you can do blackface, is it? Disney would catch hell for that.

Hispanic is the politically correct term Very Happy

Yeah, I have to agree on that. Although I’m happy that the title change implies plot change and we won't be seeing our princess as a frog all the time, the new title just isn't catchy enough. They need to find something else.

And I love the name change, Tiana sounds so much better...

OK, I know this is being discussed now, but here's a neat little summary from IMDB

Quote:
Protests Come Early to Disney's 'Princess'

Almost two years before its hoped-for release of its first hand-drawn animated film produced under the supervision of Pixar's John Lasseter, Disney has already drawn fire for alleged racial and ethnic insensitivities that were detected in its original announcement of the film, according to Disney watcher Jim Hill. Since the original title, The Frog Princess, might be regarded as a slur on the French, the title has been changed to The Princess and the Frog. The main character, named Maddy -- who was to become Disney's first black princess -- has had her name changed to Tiana, since Maddy reportedly sounded too much like Mammy. She will no longer be seen as a chambermaid working for a rich, white spoiled Southern débutante. In a statement, Disney, which said that it ordinarily does not comment on its animated films in the early stages of production, observed: "The story takes place in the charming elegance and grandeur of New Orleans' fabled French Quarter during the Jazz Age. ... Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney's rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity."

Now I know we had a little forum spat about racial attitudes and political correctness earlier in this post, but I put it, this was just the sort of thing people were wary of. Not the fact the princess was to be black, but having a black princess would have baggage attached to it.

Personally, I think all of the changes made are silly. The Frog Princess - well I knew this was set in Cajun country, but it never once crossed my mind it was likely to insult the French/French speakers. I also think the name change is stupidity beyond belief. How many of us here even entertained the idea of Maddy sounding like Mammy?

Both of the above changes are - to use the common phrase "Political Correctness gone mad", but ultimately harmless.

But I'm not so sure about the latter change. So she can't be a chamber maid anymore? I would have thought the fact that she comes from a poorer working background would be integeral to the plot. After all, most established fairytales have a rags-to-riches storyline. Snow White was basically a house maid at the start of her film, royal blood or not. Cinderella too. Aroura went from royalty to simple country living etc. But nobody complained about this.

If Disney fears being seen as being prejudged against black Americans, they always have the option of adding more black characters to the story, who can be strong, kind, successful... whatever. I would expect the storyline does depend on Maddy/Tiana and perhaps her family too starting off struggling to survive.

Finally, I understand some form of Voodoo will be seen in the film (but I'm not sure). Will Disney shy away from presenting a black voodoo user in its quest to be politically correct?

And you know why it worked? 'Cause it fit the story. There's no need to shoehorn minority races of any kind just because Disney has yet to represent them in animation.

Although Tiana wont be working for the rich girl anymore, I really hope that the rich girl is still in the story. She seemed like she could've been a very fun character.

Right now i'm wondering if Disney is still going to go for the whole prince of england thing. if there was one more change i could make, it'd be that. I just hate the idea of making up history like this. Why not use a prince from a made up country, or not even specify where he's from. Do we know where any of the princes live except aladdin?

By the time this film is released the story will probably have had some minor changes anyway. I just want to see all the concept art along the way.

Yeah, that's why I have to try distancing reality from Disney. Like, it seems odd to me that with the Beast being a French prince, no one was ever like "Hey, remember that annoying guy who used to rule us? Whatever happened to him?".
