DENZEL WASHINGTON

REMEMBER THE TITANS
Director’s Cut DVD

From Producer Jerry Bruckheimer
Arrives On DVD March 14

BURBANK, Calif., November 18, 2005 – Walt Disney Home Entertainment and Jerry Bruckheimer Films
present the acclaimed drama REMEMBER THE TITANS, starring Academy Award. Winner Denzel
Washington (2001, Best Actor, “Training Day,” 1990, Best Supporting Actor, “Glory”), available on March
14 for $19.99 (S.R.P.) on DVD and for PSP™. This amazing saga of football, heroism and courage from
renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (“Pirates of the Caribbean,” “National Treasure”) is based on a
true story.

Set in 1971 Alexandria, Virginia, where football is considered king, Herman Boone (Washington) is hired
as head coach by the local school board that is trying to integrate an all black school with an all white
school. Boone is met with displeasure by many in the community who believe that Bill Yoast (Patton), a
popular coach at the high school, should be promoted. Boone and Yoast must find a way to work
together in order to prove the skeptics wrong and bring their racially divided team together as champions
on and off the field.

REMEMBER THE TITANS also stars Will Patton (“Gone in 60 Seconds”), Donald Faison (TV’s
“Scrubs”), Ryan Hurst (“The Ladykillers”), Wood Harris (“Paid in Full”), Ethan Suplee (“Cold Mountain”),
Gregalan Williams (“Old School”) and Hayden Panettiere (“Ice Princess”) in a talented ensemble cast.
Written by Gregory Allen Howard. Directed by Boaz Yakin.

Nice to see such a comprehensive listing of bonus features on the press release! Razz

Seriously though, I will definitely investigate the film this time around. It is definitely one of the recent Disney that I've been wanting to see, but never managed to get around to it. Nice excuse to get off my bum and give it a go.

You're probably just as well with the DVD that's already out there. It has DTS, some great bonus features (including 2 commentaries and a host of making-of featurettes), and the deleted scenes that are likely to be the only things edited back in. Sure, this new one will have the all-important slipcover, but I don't think putting stuff that was deemed unnecessary back in will make a difference and how much do you want to bet the trailer and some other extras are lost?

As it is, the film is quite good. It has its formulas, but as a sports drama more than a Bruckheimer production. For some reason, its formulas seem easy to embrace and the movie is quite difficult not to like, even if it takes plenty of artistic liberties and such. Looking over my list of Live Action Disney Films of this decade, Remember the Titans takes the top slot. I can find things wrong with it, but somehow it more than makes up for it. For someone who represents the big budget/mindless popcorn cinema that is supposed to be soulless and bad for cinema, Bruckheimer has actually produced three of the most entertaining Disney films of the decade with Titans, Pirates and National Treasure. That gives me some hope for Glory Road (which seems terribly similar to Titans from its trailer), but I'm not yet won over.

The extra material and footage that are already on the existing DVD? Confused It's one thing if you don't have that DVD already, but I can't understand how you can deem the treatment worthy of your money from what sounds to be just a rearrangement (and probable loss) of materials already available at the same price. Of course, Disney could surprise us at this point, but if you know more than this press release tells us, where are you getting your info from, Pals?! Inquiring minds wish to know!

Well I do have the Widescreen of Remember the Titans, Luke.
But I'm not like Alan with the slipcover thing.
Maybe I'll get it if it's on special like the first week release at Best Buy or Circuit City.

Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon!

The local version can probably be bought for a few shiny pieces of eight, so I may indeed be better of with that as you suggest. It looks like it might appeal.

Since I don't have the old DVD, I didn't know how much deleted footage there was, but found this at imdb:

Recent network television (ABC) edition (aired 8/15/2005) reinstated 6 minutes of previously deleted scenes back into the storyline. (119 minutes sans end credit running time).

I'm guessing that's the version they're putting out on DVD. I remember seeing the extended versions before, those scenes were cut for a reason. *sigh* Now I have to hunt down an old copy in widescreen before they disappear. Or maybe I'll get both and make it a 2-disc edition. Granted, it'll be the same thing except one is six lousy minutes longer...

extended versions. Rolling Eyes

6 minutes. My gosh. Should've added 16 minutes! Wink then it's probably be worth it. But a slipcover. Yea, add that and I bet a lot of people will throw the old edition for this.

I would, but I paid $8 for this in Perfect condition at Game Stop. So I'll be content with my regular Widescreen Edition! Smile
(Escapay, go there to find it!)

MMP, can I have your slipcover then? Laughing Shifty

Laughing I plan to raid a few GameStops this weekend searching for it and a few other DVDs as well.

And we know that Pals is secretly going to keep his slipcover, bronze it, and display it on his mantle.

Slip cover or no slip cover I will not double-dip with this one. I am truly happy with what I have and they would have to add a lot more than 6 minutes of footage for me to purchase this one again.

One of the best football movies ever made, second to none, and I really like the casting and hope that those of you who didn't get this movie for your collection will do just that. It is one movie that ever movie collector should have in their collection.

The always-reliable Rolling Eyes IMDb says:

Wanna bet this is just a DVD release of that version? Sometime when I have a chance I will total up the runtime of the current DVD deleted scenes and compare that to the 113 minute theatrical runtime plus the 119 minutes mentioned here.

As for the new disc, I am not completely writing this off as a purchase (particurarly because I got the original disc for free from the B3G1F deal a couple years back, so I wouldn't feel too bad about repurchasing it.) But as much as I love the film, I'm not locked into buying it either; I will wait for reviews to see definatively what all is in the film and on the disc as bonuses and then make a final choice as to wheather or not I want to get this again. I'm guessing not -- especially since this DVD is currently slated to come out opposite an Anastasia SE from Fox with a new anamorphic transfer and director's commentary that I *will* double dip for -- it seems a bit of a waste to be tossing money at Titans again at the same time, considering I'm not really upgrading (and Anastasia + Titans would be $35-$40 in one week combined, is too much.)

Still -- just in case they end up using it I'll give Disney the chance to surprise me before completely suspending the possibility of a purchase. If they do surprise me, it will be worth $40 combined for this and Anastasia. Otherwise, Anastasia will satisfy that week entirely on its own exellent merits.

For anyone who's worried about not having seeing this, you're not missing much. The first DVD version is quite respectable for a film that doesn't command any. For anyone in to football, I would recommend Friday Night Lights over this foamy dessert of a movie. Remeber the Titans lacks the grittiness, heat, and sheer passion that Friday Night Lights have. The screenplay of and direction of Friday Night Lights is commendable and actually has a vision as opposed to the formula of most sports movies, a genre I detest. Rolling Eyes

Well the newly reformatted press release says it "Contains material that may be innapropriate for children under 17. Parental Discretion is strongly advised." Does this mean we'll be getting a more heated, grittier version of the film, or that the momma joke scene will just become seven minutes longer and very much more crude than it previously was? Razz We'll have to wait and see. Wink
