Upcoming Live-Action Remakes/Reimaginings

Post by blackcauldron85 »

There sure are a lot that either recently have come out (Alice in Wonderland) or will be coming out (unless they get shelved) (Flight of the Navigator. The Jungle Book. The Beast. Cruella. Cinderella. Maleficent.

(Then, of course, there are Into the Looking-Glass[but it's a sequel to AiW, so it's a little different) and The Sorcerer's Apprentice) (which I do like...).)

I know that Disney has made remakes/reimaginings in the past (everything from 101 Dalmatians to The Parent Trap to The Beverly Hills Family Robinson...

But it seems like there are so many reimaginings coming about. I guess it's all because Alice in Wonderland did amazingly well, huh? As much as I enjoy the 101D live action films and the Parent Trap remake, they're just not necessary. I think for me, sure, there are different ways to tell a story. And some argue that, for example, it'll be nice to get Maleficent's backstory in the upcoming film, but Disney has already told these stories. But of course, if another company told their versions of some of the stories, then everyone would be comparing them to Disney's versions.

I think one of my complaints, and it might be a silly one, is that Disney already has versions of these characters out. Who is Disney's Aurora? The 1959 animated verson, or the 2014 live-action version? There are 2 Mad Hatters. There will be 3 Cruellas!

And what about Into the Woods...I only am familiar with what I've read on Wikipedia about the plot, but wow, there will be so many (and such different personalities!) characters who already exist in Disney films!

It all comes down to one thing: $$$$$$$!!!!

They'll do anything if they think they can reap in a hefty profit! As long as people keep paying to see these films, they'll keep coming. I wish they'd invest that creativity into making more and better films with new stories and characters instead of recycling old ones. It feels like they're either running out of ideas, or are simply too lazy to think up new ones.

I don't think it's so much that they are running out of ideas (they are plenty of writers out there with new, interesting stories to tell). It's that Bob Iger seems to be focused on pictures with some level of brand recognition. Just look at Disney's upcoming releases, a large percentage of them are from a recognised and consistently successful brand, whether it's Marvel, Star Wars, the theme parks, Pixar or something inspired by one of their earlier successes. Of all of the studio presidents in Hollywood, he seems the most resistant to making original films that aren't in some way connected to something previously successful.

I liked "Alice in Wonderland" (the visuals and the music was better then the story though) and will watch it's sequel. Also enjoyed "Oz The Great and Powerful" and I am hoping for sequels there as well.

I like the idea of Disney live action fairytale movies when the movie is not all that far from the original Disney version and/or the original fairytale. I have no interest in fairytale movies when they are set in the modern world and they take away everything enchanted about the tale. All those "Cinderella" movies about modern girls - boring and not anything I would consider to have any link to the original fairytale.

Can't wait for "Into the Woods", "Maleficent" and "Cinderella"! And I am hoping that Disney will make live action versions of "Beauty and the Beast", "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "Pocahontas", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Hercules", "Mulan" etc.

"Flight of the Navigator" - what's the story there? And "The Beast" - it does not sound like a to faithful adaption of neither the original fairytale or the Disney movie?

"Cruella" and "The Jungle Book". Meh. We already got Disney live action versions of those stories. (And not being fantasy/fairytales, they do not interest me that much anyway.)

I don't mind when they do reimagining's unless they take the story so far away from what it was originally that it kind of just spits on the original like Maleficent did with everything that I love about Sleeping Beauty.

I would have loved a live action Hunchback of Notre Dame, even if they have to axe most of or all of the songs and/or make the ending more like the book.

Does Alice in Wonderland really count as a re-imagining of the animated film? The movie doesn't really acknowledge the existence of the '51 film and it seemed like they just set out to do a sequel to the book. Unless I missed an Ed Wynn impression hidden somewhere in Johnny Depp's multiple accents.

And why is Saving Mr Banks on that list? That's a biopic on PL Travers' life, not a re-imagining or a new adaptation of Mary Poppins.

We don't know yet but I think it's more likely going to be a sequel to either Zootopia or Big Hero 6.

Will probably be Zootopia since Big Hero 6 is getting a Disney XD series next year. If so, then Gigantic will be the only original WDAS feature for many years

Unfortunately for Disney Executives "Tron Legacy" a worldwide gross of $400,062,763 was not enough to continue the franchise. Can you say GREED?

TRON 3 would have been so much more awesome than many of the pointless remakes and sequels on this list.

Are Aladdin still a go? Are Disney still planning to make that pointless prequel "Genies" before eventually making a proper "Aladdin" movie - that is if the Genie movie does not bomb?
