I would be thrilled if it looked like Paperman/Feast but I dont think that style would pass the upper exec's scrutiny. It looks too flat and graphic despite the CGI underskirt. Theyd probably insist on more realistic textures, 3 dimensionality etc. By the time theyre pleased with it, it will look like any other CGi film.

CG is the golden norm now, and from the business standpoint it sells like hotcakes so they have no incentive of going back to hand-drawn at the moment. I get all that. But this constant lip service is doing nothing, and it's downright insulting when we know that there's a 99.99% chance the movie will end up looking like any other CG movie. With their unwillingness to experiment, it was a fluke we got Paperman at all (I wasn't impressed by Feast).

What makes me doubt that the picture's really something from Disney is that--wasn't Moana supposed to be 14 years old? That looks like no 14 year-old I've ever seen.

I don't expect this movie to look any different than Frozen or Tangled. I don't really believe it's possible for 3D to look like 2D anyway, although it could come close, I imagine, but it seems rather pointless to try? Besides, that would only end up too "distracting" for Lasseter's eye; it's a really good thing films like Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan, Atlantis, and The Emperor's New Groove happened when they did, because Disney probably won't be making anything with a distinctive style like them while Lasseter's there.

Jasmine is supposed to be 15 and yet, she looks incredibly sexy and kissing an old guy. Again, we're unsure if this is the final look of Moana. This was what a visiting artist saw at WDAS, but we should be getting something close to this

Rehiring traditional animators and buying new equipment is too much effort, let alone dividing resources between CGI and hand-drawn films. They tried to do it for Princess and the Frog, and apparently it didn't work out well. They don't want to waste time and money trying again.

They have Pixar. They have Disney Princess. They own Marvel. Frozen made a billion plus dollars. They can afford a few risks these days; they just choose not to.

Sure, they chose not to. I'm just pointing out that their decision to can 2-D four years back was because they didn't seem to have much gain from simultaneously doing CGI and traditional animation at the same time. All of those other business examples you gave were good decisions because they shoveled extra money into the Disney executives' pockets. Creating animated films traditionally is a pointless risk and has no benefit if CGI is now good enough to emulate hand-drawn animation. It's like the phasing out of practical, physical effects for live action films in favour of more versatile and easy CGI. Less work and pointless spending = a happier Disney.

I don't agree with them shilling out CGI. I think that a traditional movie hot on the heels of Frozen would be super successful, provided that it isn't stupidly released alongside huge competitors. I just understand the Disney higher-ups' point of view. Also, Moana will probably look amazing if they go full-out with the painterly CGI-style.

If Fox is letting Blue Sky make a movie with a hand-drawn look to it, I don't see why Disney won't do the same.

^well it doesnt look hand drawn in the traditional sense. Thats why this style for the film got greenlighted. It looks closer to claymation with flatter surfaces than 2d. At least to me it does. (The bird eye view of Paris looked pretty regular cgi to me though.)

No. It's fan-made and was first posted on Disney Wiki. This is why Disney needs to release a logo when they announce a movie, even if it's just a tentative one. The internet gets flooded with fake ones that even legit publications and websites mistake as official and when the official one finally debuts it's too late; the fake ones are already plastered everywhere. Disney's being really stupid about this.

As expected, the Disney artist who drew Moana might have gotten in trouble with Disney for possibly leaking one of Moana's designs. Her caption was changed from "Oh, hey. I went to the WDAS and saw a concept art of Moana. Moana is going to look just like this" to "Moana "

Thanks so much for posting. Maui looks great and so glad to see that he looks original. My only thing is that I don't know if Dwayne Johnson's voice will fit him. Maui looks more like a teenager than a grown-man.
