But it just won't be audio commentaries for Disney films. Not only will we be doing audio commentaries for films through "Dreamers of Dreams," we will also have "Something to Think About," our more podcast-like segment of the site where we discuss a topic regarding the Disney culture. Finally, we have "A Matter of Life and Disney," a series of essays and videos where we discuss how Disney has greatly impacted our lives in significant ways.

Welcome to a brand new season of The Three CommentEARS! After a few months’ hiatus, we return to the airwaves with an examination of the 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty. As always, your CommentEARS for this journey into the Forbidden Mountain and beyond are Albert Gutierrez, Pedro Hernandez, and Kelvin Cedeño. With its divided reputation, Sleeping Beauty has continued to influence The Walt Disney Company in many ways, paving the way for the pastel-heavy art design of Pocahontas and leading to the revisionist “what if?” scenario presented in 2014′s live-action film Maleficent. As Sleeping Beauty has already received two official audio commentaries from Disney (in 2003 and 2008, respectively – both are highly recommended), this track focuses more on personal reflections of the film and character analysis. However, we still take a look at the production, notably its place within cinema history of 1959 as a whole, and its legacy beyond its original theatrical release.

As such, it often received divided criticism and acclaim, making viewers question whether the story presented is meant to be true to myth or stand on its own. The CommentEARS look at the genesis of the film, its symbolic use of colors, and the traditional Hero’s Journey which Hercules undertakes. Fifty years ago, out of the sky she came. Mary Poppins has continued to enthrall and fascinate audiences for five decades, making us believe that spoonful of sugar still helps the medicine go down, that tea parties on the ceiling are perfectly acceptable ways to pass an afternoon, and that flying a kite can give you wings. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, let us revisit our December 2013 commentary for the film.

As usual, your commentators include Albert Gutierrez, Pedro Hernandez, and Kelvin Cedeño, with special guest commentator Aaron Wallace (author of The Thinking Fan’s Guide to Walt Disney World: Magic Kingdom) joining for this special occasion. If you’ll recall, this episode not only took a look at its production, but also made comparisons to both the original P.L. Travers books and stage musical, and looked into how it impacted our lives over the years. In addition, we examined some of the film’s spiritual themes, its high-ranking reputation within the Disney company, the various “Disney Achievements” represented within the film, several connections to 2013′s Saving Mr. Banks and Travers herself, and the film’s impact on all viewers since its release. What's the difference between the Lagacy commentaries and the regular ones? Do some films get both kinds of commentaries? Of course, I don't have time to listen to these, I figure some day I will get to hear select ones, but I'm curious. I listened to Cinderella's and loved it except Kelvin got it wrong that Charles Perrault made a mistake in writing that Cinderella had a glass slipper instead of a fur one. Perrault actually did mean a glass one.

Legacy commentaries are commentaries from Season One that we re-uploaded and posted on the new site. Our plan is that we might remaster them, change the quality and make them better than when posted originally, but since today was Mary Poppins's anniversary, and the track we did came out so well, we just uploaded it as is. But future Legacy commentaries may have some changes in sound quality and such.

We close out August with the first half of a pair of Jungle Stories. First, the Three CommentEARS tackle Walt’s final animated film, 1967′s The Jungle Book. As always, your CommentEARS for this journey into the jungle are Albert Gutierrez, Pedro Hernandez, and Kelvin Cedeño. For many Baby Boomers, The Jungle Book held a special significance, as the cast and crew of the film enabled a fitting culmination of all that Walt Disney and his studio had contributed to the animation field. Although Walt died during the film’s production, his style and approval is still apparent throughout the film, as the CommentEARS discuss. In addition, the CommentEARS take a look at the film’s decision to focus on a character-driven arc rather than follow the original Kipling stories. They also discuss the voice cast’s extensive work both before and after the film, some of the groundbreaking Xerography work that had been used previously in 1960′s short film “Goliath II,” and the film’s continuing legacy for both its own merits and as Walt’s final film.

Thanks again for another good commentary. To describe my relationship to "The Jungle Book"; It was one of my early Disney-favorites. I saw it twice theatrically and I loved it, mostly because of it's jungle/animal setting, sheer charm/fun and strong personalities. And I saw it a million of times when I got it on VHS at my birthday. Now as an adult, I still find it enjoyable, but not as much as I used to. I find it inferior to many other of the Walt movies, because of it's lackluster story and vague plot (sorry, "Jungle Book" fans). So while I have a nostalgia for "Jungle Book", I don't worship it as I used to.

And just another thing regarding the commentary for "Hercules"; I disagree that "Hercules" is more frenetic than "Aladdin". As the matter of fact, I find it more pensive than "Aladdin". "Hercules" is frenetic, indeed, but I think it has more pensive moments than "Aladdin" (Hercules getting scolded for destroying the agora, "Go the Distance"-sequence, Herc's encounter with Phil, Meg's reveal about her past, Herc and Meg's moment in the garden, Herc and Phil fighting, ect). "Aladdin" has some pensive moments indeed, but they are usually are interrupted by some comedic moments, more so than in "Hercules".
