Last year's thread: http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=30115

Figured I 'd get started early again since Costco has had Christmas stuff out since the beginning of August.
You all know the drill. Watch a Halloween/Horror movie between now and Oct 31 and post a review here.

Don't know If I'll have a chance to watch as much this year as I have a few service trips up north that I'll have to go on. Got a bunch I didn't watch last year so I'll hit those first this year.

And we want just movies, not cartoons, television shows, or any type of short films. It's very simple to have fun with this thread, and Barbossa is leading the way to a lot of fun. Let's just all join in and see how many movies with a horror or Halloween theme we can watch.

Lets get this party started!

First on the list...

The Fog

Image

John Carpenter was a guest at our local Comic Expo this past April, and for a long time I wanted to watch this one. Finally got around to picking up the Scream Factory Blu-Ray release a few weeks back and watching it tonight. Decent! I really enjoyed it. They could do wonders with a remake, but it would take the charm away from this one.

*Edit* Forgot they did a remake. But it was so bad it was forgettable.

Attempting to watch over 100 horror movies between now and October 31. These are movies that I have in my collection and will not include any shorts or animated films.

1. Circus of Horrors (1960) DVD - starring Anton Diffring, Donald Pleasance and Erika Remberg. The story of a plastic surgeon who buys a run-down circus and only employs women who have facial correction done by him. After touring Europe and becoming very successful, the leading stars are trying to leave the circus, and meet with gruesome deaths. Critics loved this movie for its storyline, and a hit song for 1960 came from this movie - "Look For A Star" by Gary Mills.

2. Venom (1981) DVD - starring Klaus Kinski, Sterling Hayden, Oliver Reed, Nicole Willamson, Sarah Miles, Susan George and Michael Hough. The story about a young boy from a well-to-do family in England, who collects reptiles. His parents are about to leave town for some time and they decide to get him a new snake, unaware that there is a kidnapping plot about to hatch started by their driver (Reed) and their maid (Susan George). Sterling Hayden is an uncle to the boy and takes him to the pet store to pick up his new addition, unknownst that the wrong box is given to the boy and contains a very deadly snake, a Black Mamba. When they get home and are confronted by the maid and an escaped criminal (Klaus Kinski) the box is somehow dropped and the snake escapes in the house. Nicole Williamson is the Scotland Yard inspector who is in charge of taking care of this situation as cleanly as possible. Sarah Miles is a reptile specialist and when a body is left on the porch she confirms that it was the work of a Black Mamba.

The film will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will make you jump a couple of times, while coming to its 'non-cop-out' conclusion. This is one to add to your collection, if you can find it.

Continuing in my quest to reach 100 horror movies by October 31st:

3. Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (1973) DVD
Cool Zombie flick before Zombies were cool. Just enough cheese to make it watchable. Fun throughout.

4. I Dismember Mama (1972) DVD-RW
Albert tried to kill his mother and is sent to a mental institution. He escapes and takes out anything and anyone that gets in his way. I remember going to the movie theater to see this when it came out and you were given "upchuck cups" because they didn't want to have clean up after you.

5. The Monster Squad (1987) Blu-ray
Dracula is alive and well and living in suburbia and has a plan to bring back all the monsters to life. A group of kids find the plans and form a 'Monster Squad' to help squish the plans, and make a pretty good movie. If you watch "Suits" on USA you should recognize Steven Macht in a very unsung role.

6. Night of the Creeps (1986) Blu-ray
College students try to bring back a corpse being used in a science lab and find they get more than they asked for. This is another of those 'zombie-like' movies before Zombies were cool. Lots of fun, and pretty scarey in parts.

Horror of Dracula (Terence Fisher) - Both Peter Cushing & Micheal Gough gave great performances. However, as much as I love Christopher Lee, from what I've seen of his depiction of Dracula, it doesn't live up to the hype I heard from, and I've so far seen 3 films of his take on the Count. The other two being "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" (okay) and "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" (:snore:). I'll give Lee 1 or 2 more viewing chances before I write off his Dracula as okay. Also, no Renfield in this picture = LAME.

Adding to my watched list:

7. The Sentinel (1971) DVD - Pretty good spooky film starring Chris Sarandon and Cristina Raines. About a woman from Europe who comes to America and wishes she hadn't after the happenings in her Upper West Side New York flat.

8. Evil Dead (1981) Blu-ray - The original, which makes the new version really look like warm doggy doo, starring "The Chin" Bruce Campbell. Very cheesy, and will make you jump in your seat a couple of times. Worth the watch.

9. Evil Dead 2 (1987) Blu-ray - Great follow-up to the first movie and I almost positive they won't try to get this one remade. Again our loveable lunk, Bruce Campbell stars as Ash. Definitely a must watch during this Halloween season.

10. The Legacy (1978) DVD - Sam Elliot, Katherine Ross, John Standing and Roger Daltrey are in this cast of real good 70's scary movie. Katherine Ross is one of five people drawn to a dying man's bedside to find out who will claim the 'Legacy' of the family. Daltrey has one of the best death scenes ever filmed. Good addition to anyone's collection.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (Jack Sholder) - I tried watching "Nightmare on Elm Street 2" again, and I've just realized how boring this film is. Aside from that infamous scene where Freddy comes out of the boy's body, there’s no definite reason to watch this film. So if you’re going to do a Nightmare on Elm Street movie marathon, my recommendation is to skip movies 2, 4, and 5 because they're just plain bad. Movie 6 however is exceptionally bad that it’ll make you laugh, it sure did for me. :P

Next on my list that I have watched:

11. House of Wax (1953) DVD - Originally produced for 3-D back in the 50's when 3-D was just a joke, this film has it all. It is one of my favorite Vincent Price movies and features a great cast that includes Frank Lovejoy, Phyllis Kirk, and introducing Charles Buchinsky (later the last name was changed to Bronson) in his first film role. For those who like a good story, and some very unique twists this is the movie for you. Avoid that tepid remake with Paris Hilton, that is truly a joke. This is about a deranged man who opens a House of Wax featuring some of the most beautiful women in history and the secret, which I won't give away here, is how he creates these beauties. A must have for any fans of Vincent Price.

12. Tales of Terror (1962) - DVD - Three Edgar Allen Poe short stories brought to life with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Basil Rathbone. Really good movie with enough terror for one evening for most people. Lots of laughs also to relieve the tension.

13. Snow White - A Tale of Terror (1997) DVD - Just picked this one up at Walmart in their $5 horror section, and am really glad that I bought it. I have heard lots of stories about how this follows the Grimm story better than any other film that has been made. And after viewing this, they are right. Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill head a very good cast that also features Monica Keena as Snow White. Not a lot of horror, but a lot of tension-filled scenes and it doesn't cop out in the ending like some of the later editions of this film have. Good find for my collection.

I ask you about this every year but I don't understand why putting rules on what other people want to log is in any way fun, in fact I think it ruins it which is a big part of why I doubt I'll be logging a damn thing this year. For many people shorts and TV things are a big part of the holiday and all holidays in general and it just doesn't seem right to not let them put the thing on a list because it doesn't follow your ideas of what should be done. I'll enjoy my Great Pumpkin and you can enjoy your strict rules.

You are aware that the Vincent Price version is also a remake? Still a great movie though, and I do agree that it's a lot better than the Paris Hilton remake.

I have looked everywhere. I would be interested to find out what it is a remake of. I couldn't find anything in IMDb or Google. Can you help?

I myself haven't seen it, so I guess we both might have to add this to our viewing log. :)

The DVD for House of Wax (originally released in 2003) contains 1933's Mystery of the Wax Museum on the opposite side of the disc. When it was re-released in 2009 as part of "TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection - Horror," it didn't include Mystery of the Wax Museum, as the opposite side of the disc was now for another film. However, the upcoming Blu-Ray (out this coming Tuesday) will contain both the 3D and the 2D versions of House of Wax, and Mystery of the Wax Museum once again.

For some reason, that "rule" was attributed it to how The Digital Bits ran their marathons long ago, which makes no sense for several reasons:

1. They do not, and never had, an online forum in which readers would keep track of their own viewing logs.

2. The web site has always been about home media news and reviews, primarily through Bill Hunt's daily columns, along with the contributions of additional writers such as the Dr. Adam Jahnke, Todd Doogan, and the late Barrie Maxwell.

3. As a regular reader of that site since 2001 (it began in 1997), I've never seen either the "The 100 Horror Films in 31 Days of October" or "31 days of Halloween," two phrases that has been attributed to The Bits, but fail to turn up on even the most intense searching of their web site, their archives (from the old format), or Google. To date, the only use of "31 Days of Halloween" that I've found has been from cable network Syfy and on this forum, the latter as part of the non-existent rule that has been associated with The Digital Bits. ABC Family has the "13 Days of Halloween" which has been running since 1998, but has always included television and short films among the regular feature film offerings.

As for UD's own history of screening logs, with the exception of the all-purpose "What Film Did You Just Watch?" and all its sequels, the more specific screening logs can be traced as far back as 2004, when Prince Eric would keep a running log of the Oscar films he'd watch (click here), followed by 2005, 2006, and 2007 Screening Logs, where others were invited to do the same (2007's was started by castleinthesky as Prince Eric left the forums).

Seasonal holiday viewing logs did not begin here until 2009, when Aaron Wallace invited everyone to simply "Post here every time you watch something Halloween-related between now and 10/31!" In the years that followed, other seasonal viewing logs would do the same thing, with the same, basic instruction:

Christmas Viewing Log 2009

Halloween Viewing Log 2010
Christmas Viewing Log 2010

Halloween Viewing Log 2011 (in which the rule in question was first introduced)
Holiday Viewing Log 2011 (Politically Correct Edition?)

Halloween Viewing Log 2012
Holiday Viewing Log 2012

None of these holiday viewing logs included a rule in the opening post which stated only theatrical films could be discussed. It's only been forcibly added in since 2011 by other members.

Apparently, this "rule" extends beyond UD, as I once kept a Christmas viewing log (2011) on my Facebook profile as well. When I was "challenged" to only do theatrical films, I said this in reply, and it's still applicable here:

I enjoy my television shows and cartoons. I don't do this for the "challenge," I do it for fun. The list is just potential items I may decide to watch, or may go out of my way to watch. It's not a definitive list of what I will/should watch during the holiday season. To impose so many limitations (no TV, no shorts, only theatrical films, done between such-and-such dates) will add too much stress to what should be a fun and lighthearted project.

To misquote Ebenezer Scrooge: "You may keep Christmas Viewing Marathons in your own way, and let me keep it in mine."

Anyway, Sky, if you're still with me after all this, please don't feel discouraged from posting your viewing log. The forums are (and SHOULD BE) inviting for anyone who wishes to participate, and certain attitudes and expectations from others should not sway you away from sharing your experiences during this Halloween season. For anyone who feels they are not rising to the "challenge" in question, do not feel like your viewing marathon is any lesser because of it. Keep in mind, that this is your time to spend how you wish. There is no need to try and appease one particular septuagenarian's "rules" for how to spend your time. You're watching these films, television shows, and cartoons because you want to, not to meet anyone's approval.

Life is short, I'd rather be spending my Halloween season having fun with friends than trying to cram in 100 movies just for some arbitrary challenge. In a 2008 column, Roger Ebert even mentioned that on average, a film critic sees between four and ten movies a week, which would round out to 16 to 40 within a month. And looking at Luke's own review history at UD, the entirety of September (up until today) has seen him post 21 reviews for feature films alone (this doesn't include the 20-Film Warner Thrillers collection or any TV fare). I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather admire people who can watch 20 to 40 movies within a month and have well-written discourse about them, than someone who watches 100 movies in a month with little else to show for it. It just seems both absurd and a huge waste of time. But who am I to judge how others spend their time? ;)

Now then, everyone, have fun.

I'm actually attending a Movie Marathon on Monday night with a few friends (including UD's own Aaron Wallace), where we'll be watching Hocus Pocus (1993), Casper (1995), Frankenstein (1931), and The Birds (1963). And this is just Part One of our marathon, as we'll be having another in late-October that includes Ghostbusters (1984), Halloween (1978), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), and Psycho (1960). Between movies during both marathons, we'll have supplemental programming ranging from classic Disney cartoons ("Lonesome Ghosts," "Trick or Treat," etc.), music videos ("Thriller"), and "Murder, She Wrote" ("Incident on Lot 7" aka The Psycho Episode).

Happy Halloween! :D

Finding so many lost treasures in my collection I forget to log them here. Over the past weekend I watched some of my Hammer Horror collection movies and also needed a break and watched some horror-comedies with Abbott & Costello.

12. Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968)
13. Scars of Dracula (1970)
14. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)
15. Frankenstein (1931) The original and still the best.
16. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
17. House of Frankenstein (1944) Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and The Wolf Man together.
18. Dracula (1931) Bela Lugosi is still the best as Count Dracula.
19. Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
20. Abbott & Costello Meet The Killer, Boris Karloff (1949)
21. Abbott & Costello Meet The Invisible Man (1951)

I actually like this one. Thought I'd give it another go this year even though I watched it last year.

First time watching this one. Not bad. Kind of like the Raven, actually, even the ending was just like The Raven.

Have you read the comic it's based on? I hear it is quite good, although I've never read it myself.

Unrelated to that however, with Albert's encouragement I have decided to log what I like, after all, no matter what it is. My list is a bit slim so far (in TV most of all) but I hope to fix that as quickly as possible.

Movies
1.Psycho III (1986) - In this film we see Norman fall off his rocker again after the events of the second film but falls in love with a nun on the run. It's ok but far from the greatness of the classic film and I doubt I'll watch it again.
2. Blackbeard’s Ghost (1968) - In this Disney Studio classic we see the story of Dean Jones waking the ghost of the pirate Captain Blackbeard (Peter Ustinov) who can only rest if he does one good deed... which he takes to mean cheating at gambling. suzanne Pleshette also stars and is lovely. Predictable and goofy but charming and fun.
3. Halloweentown (1998) - I don't think I've seen this in full in years and I have no idea why. Debbie IS Halloweentown and it's really to bad she was all but missing from the fourth film. If I had to nitpick I'd say that they may spend too much time setting up the home life of Cromwell kids as once the threat is revealed the climax seems too rushed and the film just ends.
4. Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990)- Boring. This made for Showtime movie is not as interesting as it thinks it is telling backstory of Norman Bates as played by E.T.'s Henry Thomas. Thomas seems not to know what to make of Norman (being told only broad things about him by Anthony Perkins if the tales are to be believed) and it shows. Norma Bates is hard to explain and not all that interesting to watch. The sad thing is that the other about third to a half of the film staring Perkins as an older Bates calling into CCH Pounder's radio show is really interesting and fun. I'd rather listen to him tell stories of his childhood than see them play out with the other cast. A missed opportunity but at least the Perkins bits leave his version of Norman ending on a higher note than three did. Despite the Perkins bits I'd suggest skipping the film completely and watching the wonderful new A&E series Bates Motel with the wonderful Vera Farmiga instead.
5. Carnival of Souls (1962) (With 2009 RiffTrax Mocking Commentary) This film goes nowhere. It meanders with scenes that have nothing to do with each other and often seems like unrelated deleted scenes of a film rather than a main feature. Thank god for the Rifftrax making this film a laugh riot.
6. Tales From The Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (1996) - I suppose I should have trusted the reviews. This feature length spin off of the HBO series based on a comic book is nonsensical in places, not all that scary and nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is. Much of it is very...cute as cute as a vampire brothel movie could be but too much of it just does not work. The best parts are the host segments from our dear, departed Cryptkeeper, and his 'fiend', The Mummy.

TV shows/ Shorts
1. The Walking Dead: Sick (2012) - I need to catch up on this show...

Internet shows:
1. The Cinema Snob: Friday The 13th
2. Nostalgia Chick: Addams Family Values - I have to disagree with her about the camp stuff being the stuff everyone remembers of this film... I have not seen it in quite some time so I can't comment if it's the strongest plot on a filmmaking standpoint but I always remembered the Debbie plot first and for most then the baby jokes and forget about the camp stuff completely.
3. Atop the Forth Wall: Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #2
4. Longbox of the Damned: Blackest Night
5. Longbox of the Damned: Superman & Batman vs. Vampires & Werewolves - I have been looking for this series all over since this episode was posted a year ago and can't find it anywhere. It's very frustrating to watch a show that recommends things that I want and not being able to find the blasted books.
6. The Cinema Snob: Gayacula - Even though he was reviewing a porno (do not worry, kids, black bars present and scenes are cut left and right to make it more or less safe for work) this is possibly the funniest episode of the Snob that has been done yet.
7. Longbox of the Damned: The Crow
8. The Cinema Snob: Saturday The 14th - Pretty funny review of a movie I can't believe exists... Poor Jeffrey Tambor.
9. Longbox of the Damned: Uzumaki Vol. 2
10. Longbox of the Damned: Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE - This sounds very interesting. I may have to check this out if I can find some spare change about.
11. Longbox of the Damned: The Nightmare Factory

I usually watch:
  • Blackbeard's Ghost (1968)
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)
Over the month of October about it, not really a fan of scary movies as a rule. Although last year I went to the TCM Fathom Events screening of Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein had never seen either film before and it was a brilliant event. Especially loved the interview with Sara Karloff and Bela Lugosi Jr. before the films.
