Well, not all of these are very good movies. Neither, of course, are some of the ones they've chosen (*cough* Forrest Gump *cough* Beauty and the Beast). In general, this has already been touched upon here and... well, there's little to no accounting for how these things are decided upon. I assume they have their little committee and they take ridiculous votes.

Just took a look and... the Roger Corman directed adaptation of House of Usher is in there. What was it that Luke was saying just a few months back when he reviewed that Roger Corman documentary, about him not being a good director...? I'd say that's one thing they did right but, 1964's Masque of the Red Death was superior.

I'm arguing film quality more than fame. But I also already stated plain as day that I don't believe they have a reliable method for selecting films. If Forrest Gump- why not Shawshank Redemption as well? I think they're both painfully, freakishly overrated films; but: where's the consistency? I don't really consider myself a movie buff. I watch almost all my movies for something more than just to affirm what other people, who made the hype responsible for me seeing it, see in it.

And, technically, I guess I only poked my head in this thread because a thought occurred to me. Perhaps it doesn't add much to the discussion but here it is anyway.

There's not a single film on that list that I can't say doesn't belong, but I cannot believe Mary Poppins wasn't added long ago. And that list contains several Oscar-winning performances that need to be preserved for all time:

Glad to see the National Film Registry discussed here and lists of films that should be included. PLEASE submit your lists to the Registry. Public nominations do influence the National Film Preservation Board and the Librarian of Congress who select the 25 finalists each year.

I doubt either film will make the list anytime soon. Both are just okay in my book to be honest. Also none have anything really significant about them to make the list.
