Disney & Johnny Depp to Develop Two New Films

Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil Makes Disney Deals for 'The Night Stalker' and 'Paul Revere's Midnight Ride'
http://www.deadline.com/2011/07/johnny- ... ight-ride/
Disney and Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil are teaming up on two new projects: a feature version of the '70s TV movie The Night Stalker, and a drama about the Midnight Ride made by Paul Revere to warn Colonial militia of the impending British invasion. Depp is the potential star of both films, and he and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski will produce.

Like many, Dembrowski and Depp had fond memories of the ABC telepic and series The Night Stalker, and they got Disney's Rich Ross and Sean Bailey sparked on a pitch for Depp to potentially play tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak. Originated by Darren McGavin, Kolchak was the dogged journalist first seen in the 1972 telepic (where he hunted a killer who was draining the blood of beautiful girls on the Las Vegas strip) and later in the ABC series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Kolchak's investigations always seemed to lead him to the doorstep of vampires, zombies, werewolves and aliens. For its time, it was pretty scary stuff. The studio will go out to writers shortly. David Kennedy will be exec producer.

Dembrowski and Depp set up the Paul Revere film at Disney with Batman Forever scribes Lee and Janet Batchler writing the screenplay. The film will focus on the Boston silversmith and that 24-hour period in which he made the risky "midnight ride" from Charlestown to Lexington, becoming a seminal figure in the American Revolutionary War. Jon Brown and Infinitum Nihil's Margaret French-Isaac will be executive producers.

It is a coup for Disney's Ross and Bailey to be back in business with Depp, right after Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides cracked the $1 billion mark in worldwide gross. It's the third time that the studio has reached the billion-dollar milestone on a film with Depp in the lead role, after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Alice In Wonderland. Depp next saddles up for the studio with Armie Hammer in the Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger.

Depp and Dombrowski, whose Infinitum Nihil has a production deal with GK Films, have been busy: The Rum Diary, which was written and directed by Bruce Robinson and stars Depp, will be released by FilmDistrict on Oct. 28; the Martin Scorsese-directed 3D Hugo Cabret will be released Nov. 23 by Paramount Pictures; and they are now shooting the TV series transfer, Dark Shadows, at Warner Bros, with Depp starring and Tim Burton directing. Both Dark Shadows and The Night Stalker were based on series produced by the late Dan Curtis.

The Night Stalker will push the boundaries of the family film formula that Disney is following under Ross and Bailey. But as they showed by taking on the Ice Cube-directed Chrome and Paint, Ross and Bailey are broadening that definition into edgier territory. And who wouldn't bet on The Night Stalker and Paul Revere with Depp a strong possibility to star in both? UTA reps Depp.

By the way, insiders have denied a story in The Wrap story that Depp is set for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean.

Damn it.

Johnny Depp needs to work with Gilliam again; his best performances (i.e. Ed Wood, Raoul Duke, Edward Scissorhands, etc.) were under the direction of either Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam. As Burton hasn't made even a remotely decent movie (besides Big Fish and Sweeney Todd) since the nineties, and his work is becoming worse and worse, that means he's out of the question.

Depp himself is also going downhill (thanks to the dreadful POTC franchise which proved that Depp needs a director who can restrain him, unlike Gore Verbinski), and it's a shame seeing as he is a great talent, especially when it comes to using his facial expressions, gestures and body language to act-however, his impression of Keith Richards in POTC not only went too far, but wasn't a very good idea in the first place.

^You just pissed off both Jack Sparrow and the Corpse Bride and maybe one or two oompa loompas(though they might be outcasts)

As for the Pirates Franchise, it wasnt all Gore's fault. Disney made him do it.

As a fan of both the telemovies "The Night Stalker" and "The Night Strangler" and the tv series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker", I would love to see a remake of "The Night Stalker"! While I'm certainly partial to Darren McGavin, I think Johnny Depp could definitely give a unique spin to the lead role.

Let's hope this comes to fruition.

Disney is setting Edgar Wright to direct The Night Stalker, the remake of the ABC telepic and series that the studio is developing as a potential star vehicle for Johnny Depp to play intrepid tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak. Depp and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski will produce.

Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, comes aboard before the studio has set a writer, and he will oversee and shape the project with Depp and Dembrowski from the ground floor. As Deadline revealed, the film took root at the studio last summer, borne out of Depp and Dembrowski’s fond memories of the original 70s movie and series that starred Darren McGavin. He covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode. David Kennedy will be exec producer of the film.

The subject matter will be tailored to fit Disney’s family film mandate and likely a PG-13 rating, but the idea of Wright’s hyper-reality style and Depp’s gift for constructing quirky characters sounds like a good match to me. Wright is also attached to direct Ant-Man for Marvel Studios and Disney.

The Night Stalker was one of two films that Depp and Dembrowski set at the studio. The other was a drama about the Midnight Ride made by Paul Revere to warn Colonial militia of the impending British invasion that made him a seminal figure in the American Revolutionary War. Jon Brown and Infinitum Nihil’s Margaret French-Isaac will be executive producers.

D.V. DeVincentis has been tapped to write Disney’s big-screen adaptation of The Night Stalker.

Stalker is one of the more high-profile projects in the works at the studio because Johnny Depp is attached to star and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is attached to direct.

The project is based on the ABC television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, created by Jeff Rice and starring Darren McGavin. The show ran for only one season (1974-75) but proved a hit in syndication.
