Singin' in the Rain: 60th Anniversary UCE preorder!

Yes. It comes with an umbrella. No lithographs, not a music box, not a reproduction of the film's program-- An umbrella. Oh, and a book. Which is nice, I guess.
This is one UCE I'll be skipping out on (unless more/better goodies are announced). I'll just buy the one-disc release.

I'm saddened that they're moving away from using movie posters as cover art (compare the Singin in the Rain', Casablanca, Treasure of Sierra Madre, etc. DVD cover art to Blu). Still, I'm REALLY excited for this. One of my favorite movies and I don't own it, so I've never actually seen a single bonus feature for it and I've never seen it not looking like shit on DTV's shitty compressed SD feed.
Will wait for the disc-only release, like Gone With the Wind (The Scarlett Edition) and The Wizard of Oz (The Emerald Edition), both had all 3 discs with none of the extra garbage.

I've only owned this one on VHS, yet it's a favorite of mine too, so I'm psyched! I might not get the UCE version though, I don't know. I'll have to read up on it more when I have time.

I knew someone was going to bring that up. lol. But that's actually an important point, though. I think you could ask someone what Mary Poppins' umbrella looked like in that film, and they could probably describe it accurately, but you don't remember Gene Kelly's umbrella. You remember the fantastic dance number and all that rain. So, if there were a replica of Mary's umbrella in a MP UCE (that I pray is to be) I'd be totally for it. lolenigmawing wrote:But . . . but . . . your user name!!!UmbrellaFish wrote:Yes. Forget my negativity about the set though-- I'm just excited to see how great the movie will look.

Re: Singin' in the Rain: 60th Anniversary UCE preorder!
A Mary Poppins set with a replica umbrella would be awesome! But only if it was a full scale, usable yet well-done replica umbrella. I can't help but think something like that is unlikely. In fact, though I haven't read on it, I suspect the umbrella that comes in this Singing in the Rain set is some very compact thing so it will fit in a DVD set. Pretty ridiculous bonus. The soundtrack CD would be a better one. Even a rain hat and slicker with Singin' in the Rain on the back would be better. I'd like a nice (decent sized) sculpture of Gene in his famous pose more than anything though. Anyway, back to the Poppins idea, I just got a replica of her Broadway umbrella from the Broadway show, but I would still prefer to get one with a likeness to the movie version. Jeez, why'd they have to make it so different...UmbrellaFish wrote:I knew someone was going to bring that up. lol. But that's actually an important point, though. Yeah, I totally get you there. It seems kind of like a cheesy, last-minute gimmick to include. It's a classy film and deserves something not so desperately tacked on.UmbrellaFish wrote:I knew someone was going to bring that up. lol. But that's actually an important point, though. Sigh . . . I haven't seen this one in forever. Used to have it recorded on VHS and watched it with my mom a lot. I can't imagine how much better the Blu-ray will look over that fuzzy old EP VHS.

No, see this is a big boxset. It's not in a regular case.Lazario wrote:Is this a common thing with Blu-Rays? The cover being positioned as landscape instead of portrait?
For comparsion, here's the The Sound of Music box-set versus the regular BD case.

"his summer, Warner Home Entertainment will bring Singin' in the Rain to Blu-ray. One of the most beloved films ever made, directors Stanley Donen (Charade) and Gene Kelly's musical-comedy stars Kelly (An American in Paris) as Don Lockwood, a famed silent-movie star trying to make the transition to talking pictures.
Standing between Don and success is his on-screen love interest, the self-absorbed Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen, The Asphalt Jungle), whose speaking voice is so shrill that Don, his creative partner Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor, That's Entertainment!), and studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell, Twelve O'Clock High) devise an ingenious solution: with the help of struggling actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds, One For the Money), they will dub over Lina's voice with Kathy's far more lovely one.
However, keeping Lina unaware of the substitution soon becomes the least of Don's worries, and as he develops ever stronger feelings for Kathy, Don begins to worry that his scheme is curtailing Kathy's very real dreams of Hollywood success.
Both Hagen and Lennie Hayton picked up nods for their work at the 1953 Academy Awards Ceremony (receiving nominations for, respectively, Best Supporting Actress and Best Musical Score), and the film itself ranks as Number Ten on the American Film Institute's Top 100 Films of the 20th Century listing.
In recognition of the feature's sixtieth anniversary, Warner has prepared a three-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition. This Blu-ray/DVD combo pack presents the film in its 1.37:1 original aspect ratio - and is the first film in Warner's catalog to receive a 4K, "Ultra-Resolution" feature scan - with a monaural DTS-HD Master Audio track.
The set also contains the following supplements:
Commentary by Stanley Donen, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Cyd Charisse, Kathleen Freeman, screenwriters Betty Comden & Adolph Green, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and film historian Rudy Behlmer
All-new documentary Singin' in the Rain: Raining on a New Generation
1996 PBS documentary Great Performances: Musicals, Great Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM
The Making of Singin' in the Rain behind-the-scenes featurette
Outtake musical number of "You are My Lucky Star"
Twelve clips from films with Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed songs
Scoring stage session cues
Stills gallery
Theatrical trailer
Note: In addition, Warner will release a value-priced edition of Singin' in the Rain on single-disc Blu-ray.
