Source: Next year last for 'Desperate Housewives'

http://news.yahoo.com/source-next-last- ... 47183.html

Quote:
According to a person familiar with ABC's plans for the drama, next season will be its last. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the network and producers hadn't authorized public comment.

ABC, which is scheduled to discuss its fall schedule at a news conference Sunday, declined comment.

"Desperate Housewives," a glossy prime-time soap opera with an ensemble cast including Terri Hatcher and Eva Longoria, made a pop-culture and ratings splash when it premiered in 2004 but has seen its audience dwindle. There's been off-screen drama as well, with former cast member Nicolette Sheridan suing over her departure.

Its creator, Marc Cherry, isn't returning to produce next season's episodes of "Desperate Housewives."

I was going to post this, but I didn’t think anyone here but me would care about the news. :(

I admit that there’s no denying that the writing quality went down as the seasons went on. They’ve always been great at the comedy, but the drama often times comes off hollow in later seasons. That said, the actors have been and still are amazing. I most look forward to seeing Felicity Huffman in any future projects she'll take on. :)

I think the main reason for the end is obviously the drop in ratings. They lose a million viewers every year in the spring when ABC decides to use a really horrible schedule (new episode, three weeks re-runs, new episode, Grammy’s, re-runs, new episode, re-runs, season finale! ). That’s not counting Hulu, etc. views though. Last spring, they finally went under 10 million viewers--when they used to make around 24 million--so they probably decided to end before the ratings took a really bad turn, especially since the show has started to cost more than its worth with new contracts dished out last year. Still, only 2 years ago it was the 3rd most-watched show in the world, and I remember reading an article about how popular shows like Desperate Housewives have actually helped to change views about America in certain parts of the world (like Pakistan, Iraq, etc.).

I have to admit it depresses me a little, but, all in all, I think this season will be a fitting end. All the women have a huge secret they will have to deal with, and which will end up bringing them closer together than ever. Also, I’ve heard the mystery will involve Mary Alice this season--back to basics. Maybe they'll finally give Zack a proper resolution now that Felicia and Paul have been taken care of? That combined with the Lynette-Tom divorce will hopefully add up to an amazing season. I hope Dana Delaney and Kyle McLachlan will return for the series finale; I would like to see cameos of everyone who's played major roles over the years (though it's only too bad Dixie Carter passed; and I'm guessing Sheridan is out of the question... ).

I look forward to what they do for a proper send-off to these characters. Considering the great things they did back in season 5 for the 100th episode, they better pull out all the stops for this final year! :( :D

Too bad. It's a great series, and it should have continued for a few more seasons at least. Will they be able to wrap up all plotlines and threads and give the series the great ending it deserves in just one season?

ABC made if official and in their release of their 2011-2012 schedule they list "Desperate Housewives" as it final season, and alos mentioned in the release that Marc Cherry will have nothing to do with this season's shows. Should be interesting. Will it make it through all 24 episodes or get the axe at 13? Who knows?

I don’t think there’s any doubt that there’ll be 23 episodes. Marc Cherry had planned to leave as the main influence on the show this season regardless--he had planned for the show to end at season 9.

I’m kind of looking forward to see if the show improves somewhat without him. I think he was part of the reason some aspects of the show became stale in the later seasons.

I think Bob Daily will take over. He helped to write on Frasier, I think.

LOVE this show! Been watching since day 1 in 2004. 8 seasons is long enough. I'm sure it will be the full 23/24 episodes. The only reason I'm mad that it's ending so soon is because Marc Cherry had always wanted to end it in season 9, but now that it is ending a year early, I fee like the storylines will be rushed.

Here’s the new promo for the final season:

More promo images can be found here: http://desperatephotos.net/thumbnails.php?album=3305

This’ll probably be the DVD/Blu-Ray cover, too. I don’t know what’s up with Hatcher’s hair. It’s too bad Cross and Longoria didn’t switch places, because the picture could be a reverse of the first season’s cover.

So excited for this season to begin next Sunday. The characters definitely developed a lot this past season, so I really want to see where this’ll go. I have a feeling this’ll be Felicity Huffman’s season. :P

I personally thought that was a fantastic premiere. I hope the rest of the season can stay on that level. I had a feeling the women would receive a letter just like Mary Alice did, but I didn't think it'd happen so soon!

The title of this thread should be changed because ABC is promoting this season as the season we say "Goodbye to the Ladies of Wisteria Lane".

If you watched last night's show you should know that. Looks like they are going out with a bang!!!

The first half of this season has been amazing. Yes, the show isn’t at its height, but this has been the best since season 5, tbh. The end of tonight’s episode--the cliffhanger--was chilling. On the same level as when Carlos saw Alejandro a few weeks ago. It really makes me angry that all the wives blame Bree when she’s only tried to hold together their mess. I doubt they would kill a main character midway through the final season, but I think Bree would be the only one who would even consider suicide out of them all. I could imagine that could be something to happen in the last episode, with Marcia Cross’ voice taking over for Mary Alice/Brenda Strong. Eerie, but brilliant.

Of course, in the second half of the season, they’ll have a lot of cameos to wrap up the series. I’m really looking forward to seeing a lot of characters again, and to see how they end the show. Very bittersweet feeling for me.

This season has been very gloomy and depressing. Definitely not one of my favourites. All of the characters are not themselves due to the situation. What was great about the series (a mix of drama, humour and mystery) seems to be lacking. There is just drama and agony; no humour or fun (understandably of course). There is no real mystery either.

Regarding who run over Chuck, it's either Carlos or Ben but it's probably Ben since he's a more disposable character. This scene felt reminiscent of season 3 when Orson ran over Mike. Chuck is such a despicable and hated character I think the audience will be glad if they killed him off.

On a different note, I really hope Linette and Tom get back together in the end.

Indeed.

That would be a very interesting concept (they have nothing to lose either since it's the last season). However, if they did that there wouldn't be any catharsis and everything would seem pointless for the second half of the season.

Me too. They behaved very cruel and unfair.

I agree; that's why I know they aren't going to kill her. I was just thinking that--if this was the last episode of the series--it would kind of be awesome to end with a suicide, and have the person's voice take over in MA's place. Part of me thinks the idea's is crazy good; but the other part of me is, "I don't want Bree to die!" Bree's always been my favorite, so it would be a disturbing trend for another favorite of mine to die.

It's Gabrielle's attitude towards the other women that irritates me the most. She should be grateful towards the others, not demanding.

Also, I agree that it was most likely Ben who ran Chuck down (though my first thought was Mike--that would be a little ironic since, like you said, he had been run down himself before  ). From what I've read of spoilers, Ben's more connected to the wives than he seems at the moment. Something to do with Mary Alice.

And, I agree, this season is more depressing than others, but I think it's an interesting way to end the series. Plus, the murder allows the women to interact (and to develop) more, and the show works well when they mix the characters together more. :D

It really bums me that we have to wait until Jan. 8, 2012 for a new episode of "Desperate Housewives". Wish they could squeeze in a Christmas-themed show or something.

Agreed. I loved this episode. Every moment I was engaged and wanted to know what would happen next. As usual they left all the men unaccounted for at the time of Chuck's "accident" (as they have done with most of the mid season cliff hangers) which means any of them could have done it. I think its most likely (in this order) Ben, Mike or Carlos. Tom I doubt would go to such lengths especially since he doesn't know how close the women are to being caught. Loved that this was kind of a wink back to season 2 when Mike got hit by the car.

Meanwhile I agree that Renee will most likely follow Bree to the motel and stop her from killing herself. The scene with Mary Alice was awesome but the hype made me expect more and I hoped for moreconversationbetween the two women. It was incredibly creepy that Mary Alice encouraged suicide but again some more deep discussion would have been welcomed, especially after Brenda's promise in her interview. I just feel that this season has so much potential for Mary Alice to appear before each of the women and yet it isn't happening as much as it should, especially since we only have like 12/13 episodes left of Housewives forever.

I gotta say I loved the comedy tonight, especially with Gabby and the rehab storyline. I liked that all the characters were moving in the same direction this week so nothing felt filler. And Lynette didn't go to far in my opinion cause she is ensuring Tom is around should shit go down- the timing was just bad (though him going to Paris is funny cause it seems all fresh young couples wanting to get away from it all do that on Housewives- lol).

The stand out for the night was of course Bree who's story was so emotional. When she was talking to those three women it was very funny and engaging, highlighting just how soapish the show has been over the years (and she acknowledge George was dead as well as Rex and Karl which was gold!)I dont get why Andrew isnt there for Bree. They were on good terms at the end of Season 7 so I dont understand why she keeps saying he abandoned her. They really need to bring him back- I mean come on he lives down the block from her in the old Adam's house! lol. But still very emotional and I felt so bad for her that she had lost everything. The moment she acknowledged how big and empty her house was and how alone she felt I started to tear up. She is my favourite character and to see her so alone and venerable was incredible to see. Her isolation in that big house is something I thought about when Chuck broke in. I thought- wow why would you still live in a house that big, filled with so many memories? It would get so lonely wouldn't it? Turns out I was right. I wonder if the show runners purposely left the motel set unchanged for this episode so that it appeared Bree returned to the motel where she and Karl had had their affair in Season 6 to give the sense Bree went there cause she was once happy in that space? Probably not but if so itdefinitelygives a sense of depth.

Overall fantastic episode that left me wanting more. More in the sense I want the next episode so I can see how the characters deal with Chuck's death and the fact their case could be picked up (not to mention Ben's true motives and the chance Lynette and Tom may get back together) but also more in the sense I wanted more of Mary Alice talking to Bree. It should haveoccurredsooner in the episode so itdidn'tend up so short. I hope they startutilizingMary Alice more next year. BRING ON 2012 ALREADY! lol.

Thanks, Sotiris. :)

I didn't get that either. Maybe she just meant that they don't have a very close relationship. They're probably as close as they'll ever be though. And we know her and Danielle aren't very close either, although they have resolved a lot of their issues. I do wish they had been able to show Bree's role as a mother-in-law and grandmother more; she's really the only housewife on the lane who could show that dimension.

Also, I'd really love if they had Andrew and Justin (from the 1st and 2nd seasons) get back together before the end. I always thought they worked well together.

I didn't even think of that, but I wish they had made that connection. I would have loved if Bree had also talked to Karl and/or Rex in that moment. But I guess they wanted to make more of a connection to Mary Alice, focusing on the isolation women can feel.

I feel the same. :) But I'm guessing--I hope I'm right--that they'll utilize her more when the ladies start getting really desperate. I believe all the women are further down the hole than they ever have been before--cue the drama! :P

I know I said before that Bree is the only one I could see actually committing suicide, but I've thought about it more and I really could see Lynette doing it if things got really bad--although I don't think the show would go there. I mean, she's been left to take care of a boat-load of kids she didn't want, she doesn't have the career she always wanted, she's never been well-off money-wise, and her husband is already dating and neither of them have filed for divorce. Honestly, I know Lynette isn't perfect, but I really feel sorry for the character.

I've been feeling that way too. When Lynette realized in episode 8 the flowers weren't intentionally sent to her from Tom my heart broke. Wish they could reconcile.

There's a lot of cool stuff coming up. Susan and Gabby are both going to be involved with Alejandro's new family. Its gonna be epic! :-D
