Editor's Note 9/20: Wondering what happened to that big Shanghai Disneyland project? While the economy and Beijing's tricky politics slowed it down the past two years, it's about to kick into high gear when Disney's 2011 fiscal year starts on Monday, Oct. 4th. The Shanghai Disneyland team gets a lot bigger on that day with plenty of salaried folks from Anaheim and Glendale being formally transferred to the Shanghai project payroll, and the start of construction in Shanghai shouldn't be far behind them. You can expect more media announcements later this year, but the real work begins on October 4th. - Al Lutz

I agree, I hope they get a whole new castle that isn't affiliated with either princess, maybe Snow White or Belle. I feel like if all the parks featured different castles they'd attract more international visitors. Even though Disneyland Paris's castle is Aurora's, I still really want to go visit the park and see it because it's different then the two in the U.S. I don't have as much a desire to go visit Tokyo or Hong Kong because they are copies. I do really want to see DisneySea though, but that further drives my point that a change of flavor attracts attention.Jack Skellington wrote:I hope it's neither, all I could tell is that it's white and has thin towers much like the original castle from the Cinderella movie.

Walt didn't give Snow White her own place when he had two chances...but I agree she deserved her own place. Honestly, it should have been the one in Disneyland, the first princess for the first park.
But from that picture, it doesn't look like it could be Snow White's at all. It looks most like either Cinderella's or the Beast's. It looks most like Cinderella's, especially in color.
And if they do make it Cinderella's, but more like the film's...OMG A DREAM COME TRUE. HEAVEN. Well, for me!
But why the hell does Shanghai need this wtf? Where is Shanghai in relation to Hong Kong? And isn't Hong King Disneyland doing really crappy?! Will they learn?
Oh and I agree with you too singerguy, I only wish that the castles looked slightly more like the ones in the film. I mean...we should be able to tell who's castle they are from how they look...

Because not every Disney theme park needs to be in the US of A?Disney Duster wrote:But why the hell does Shanghai need this wtf?
I want a Disneyland Down Under simply to make Australia even more awesome than it already is. Or maybe even a revival of Disney's America, simply so I can just drive 4 hours to Virginia rather than a day and a half to Florida.
And I hope that Disneyland Mars is in the works for 2155, the 200th Anniversary of Disneyland.

It's a small park (the entirety could fit within Disneyland with room to spare) compared to the likes of Walt Disney World or Tokyo Disneyland (or generally any park built after Disneyland). Attendance figures also weren't what they expected, but it has been growing steadily after a drop in its second year (much like how shows in their sophomore season may experience a slight drop in viewership before rising up again). Wouldn't really call it "crappy". Crappy would be Disneyland Paris's daily park attendance only being half what they expected in its first year. HKDL was overcrowded in its first year.Disney Duster wrote:And isn't Hong King Disneyland doing really crappy?! Will they learn?

Shanghai is a reasonably affluent city with a sizeable middle class (much like Hong Kong), and being that kind of distance from Hong Kong wouldn't be cannibalisation. I'd compare it to having parks in California and in Florida; they're at the opposite ends of one large country. If anything's bad about Hong Kong Disneyland, it's not that it's doing poorly but that it's ludicrously underdeveloped.Disney Duster wrote:But why the hell does Shanghai need this wtf? Most Disney fans grumble simply because it seems a bit of a quick cut-and-paste job from other parks; Main Street at HKDL is basically a carbon copy of the one in Anaheim, the castle is a copy of Anaheim's without even a tiny walk-through, and Pooh uses the same, tacky-looking tent façade from Florida. Equally, there is no Frontierland (that ultimately be a case of the Chinese not having much knowledge about Westerns, though), and a number of seemingly essential attractions still aren't there. Off the top of my head, the following are missing: Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Tours, Peter Pan's Flight (or any Fantasyland dark ride aside from Pooh), a 3D cinema for Tomorrowland, Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain, though the latter two are coming in altered forms. To make matters worse, an early press release promised a reasonably unique and lavish park, something that probably didn't help.
Though either way I wouldn't harbour any huge desire to go, I really hope that Shanghai Disneyland improves on the serious mistakes made in Hong Kong, if just for creativity's sake.

I agree Wondy and thanks Escapay.
It's just that, first, obviously America loves and wants Disney, and two parks in America is good for that.
Japan loves Disney and American and Western culture, so a park there is definately wanted.
Europe apparently was worried about a Disney park being in their midst, but the thing is that most of Disey's work actually comes from European stories and art, so it's very appropriate there.
But Asia...I thought they kind of hated America, and I don't even know how they really feel about Disney.

Japan is part of Asia.
And China even had a Disneyland knock-off in Beijing, which shows the parkgoers would love Disney in whatever incarnation it comes to them in. A genuine park is sure to get as much/a lot more business than the knock-off.

I guess I meant China, China seems to dislike America.
I know that so many of the things in America are made in China, but, it is crap, and so was that Disney theme park knock-off, so that's part of why I actually thought China was anti-America, aside from, you know, everything else about them. And Hong Kong and Shanghai are both in China.

From when my choir toured china, all I could tell is that they loved us.
We were a choir of about 60 people, and the local chinese people would gather around us and ask to take our pictures. They always commented on how pretty or handsome we were. In some places we were police escorted and everything.
Granted we were there 2 weeks prior to the Olympics and performing in a pre-olympic music celebration tour, so that could account for some of the excitement. Despite that, I felt welcomed by the chinese people wherever we went.

The relationship between China and USA is a mixed one and isn't a black and white viewpoint like oh say USA and Iran(or N.Korea).Disney Duster wrote:I guess I meant China, China seems to dislike America.

China is becoming a economic super giant. And will even beat Japan in super economic power. Building DL in Shanghai is a gold mine opportunity for Disney. Not a stupid move at all actually.

I also wanted to say that since Hong Kong has only recently become a part of China again it almost stands as a separate entity from China. They almost have a completely separate culture and have their own economy and currency. When we crossed from Hong Kong into Shenzen (a completely Chinese city that practically borders Hong Kong) we had to go through border patrol. They even have different stamps in my passport.
They way I see it, I think a park in Shanghai will be a lot accessible and feel more "Chinese" than the park in Hong Kong.

There are even hopes that some of Disney's films may eventually be made here, said a manager at Shanghai's Cartoon and Animation Industry Base, who declined to be named. “I'm confident Chinese talent can make a better — or at least a more authentic — version of Kungfu Panda or Mulan,” he quipped.
The Chinese scare me. This is why I didn't want a Disney park to be made there. Now everyone can see some of what I mean...
