Disney Voice Actors Discussions- Keith David

Post by UmbrellaFish »

Keith David (June 4, 1956- present)

Image

Biography-
Born in New York’s Harlem district, David caught the acting bug early on in a production of The Wizard of Oz as The Cowardly Lion. Graduating from Julliard, David went onto a successful career in movies, television, and Broadway, earning many Tony and Emmy nominations along the way.

While Keith David has made a name for himself in live-action films, he is best recognized for his deep voice. It is this voice that has brought him to fame, making a splash in Disney’s Gargoyles as Goliath, the leader of the clan. After the success of Gargoyles, David did voice-over narrations for various commercials, including United States Navy announcements. Recently, David has come back to the Mouse House, once again in a lead role, now the villain in Disney’s musical, The Princess and the Frog.

This is part one of a series of discussions about Disney voice actors and their careers. I’ve been compiling these list for awhile now, and while it’s been fun, there are missing links and information that I couldn’t find out myself. If you know something else to add, or possibly see something that needs to be corrected, please tell me.

Also, part two should feature:
Barbara Luddy
Sterling Holloway
Verna Felton
Adriana Caselotti
Russi Taylor

So, with no further ado, let’s discuss Keith David!

The perfect voice for his characters. It really shows his range when he can play both the heroic Goliath and the evil Facilier, all while speaking in that same incredibly-deep voice. And "Friends on the Other Side" is definitely one of my favourite scenes from The Princess and the Frog.

Keith David is the official voice of Spawn. He's already signed up to reprise the role for the new series being made :pink:

Anyways, I just love his voice. Whether playing Spawn, Goliath, or Facilier (all perfect casting), it has to be one of the most naturally bad-ass voices ever. Although, I'm not sure how I feel on him playing the cat in Coraline.

As far as live action, I mainly remember him from Pitch Black, The Thing, and Platoon. Cameos that come to mind were Armageddon (as the general), Requiem for a Dream (no way you'll ever forget this one), and Crash (corrupt Lieutenant in a race movie that you'll either like or HATE). I'm sure there are others I've seen, like Road House, Volcano, and The Replacements, but I haven't seen those movies in forever.

I think it's even more bad-ass that he can sing...

Let's be honest: he is the MAN. There isn't anything more that needs to be said.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't even know who Keith David was until during production of The Princess and the Frog.

And now that I know who he is and what he's been involved with, I think he's pretty awesome. :)

The coolest voice in the world! I had the pleasure of meeting him once; a very nice man. (actually, he knew a teacher at my school who kind of forced him into appearing for the class, but he seemed to be pleased to it!)

Speaking of his live-action roles (which I can't really comment on since I've seen so little of his work in that field) there is a movie of his that's either coming out/is out called "Pastor Brown". I'm mainly interested because Salli Richardson is in it and she plays his daughter.

Oh and about his voice quality in general- just plain terrific. Goliath, Facilier, Apollo, whatever- it's terrific!

Keith David is awesome in Men at Work, a delightful, underrated Sheen family comedy. In recent years, he's also clearly outranked the similarly-named but less memorable David Keith.

Do tell :o

I simply love Spawn, so does that mean they'll continue were they left off as originally envisioned, I know that for legal reasons Mc farlane had to back out, him not owning the full property and all...

I just wish he'd hurry

Right. Facilier and Oscar shared an animator, though, so the characters are connected. Just not by the voice.
