Hi guys, I just bought a Region 1 copy of Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary edition. It LOOKS pretty real, and there is the Buena Vista stamp, but directly below the stamp it says Made in Taiwan in the same blue ink. The top DVD seal has kind of 'pixelated'/80's computer-type font, and the security seal on the side is a bright red instead of the typical white 'security device enclosed' stickers. Did some copies come this way, or is it an import? Does that make it a bootleg, even if it was technically a manufactured DVD?

edit: pics

Here's the red seal...

Here's the Made in Taiwan/buena Vista (sorry for bad quality)

...and here's the pretty legit looking dvd itself

We won't be able to tell without some pictures - the undersides of the discs will be a dead giveaway, but opening the package might affect your chances to return/claim a refund for the purchase. Smile

I've had my fair share of DVDs (Disney and non-Disney) that have had the red security sticker and not the white one.

Also, I actually kept the plastic wrap from a few of my Disney titles, and some of the ones with the blue stamp say "Made in (Country)" on them.

Not sure about the top DVD seal, though.

2 out of 3 ain't bad, so i bet it's legit.

Can't get a good shot of the top DVD sticker, but it's 'pixelated' as in the Roger Birnbaum tree logo before Blade Runner lol or an old Apple computer style font on screen.

edit: pics put in first post

here's a clearer pic of Buena/ Taiwan stamp

OK...I've had DVDs with the red/white security stickers before so those are fine Smile . The second picture won't upload for me (just a red 'X'), so unfortunately can't comment for that.

Second picture is now viewable...can't see anything which would instantly scream "Bootleg!", it does have the Buena Vista logo on the shrinkwrap so that is fine...

My guess is you have what is called a "parallel import", since it says it's manufactured in Taiwan.

Thanks Cordy, what would a parallel import entail? Sometimes my DVDs say 'Made in Mexico' on the box but never on the seal, and never from Taiwan.

"Parallel imports" are titles manufactured in other countries but identical in quality and content to those made in their original country. I've had lots of discs from Mexico (mainly from Universal) and never had a problem. There's quite stringent quality control with these programmes, so I don't see you having any major problem.

Few pirate DVDs come equipped with security stickers and similar features. Smile
