I officially got my first movie on Blu-Ray today (Sleeping Beauty obivously). I don't have an HDTV of course, but I was still able to play the disc on my PS3.

I got my DVD but was a little mad when I opened it. The DVD Guide insert is missing. I got the DMR insert and the small catalogue with all the useless offers, but no DVD guide. :x Actually, this isn't the first Platinum that I got that's missing that particualr insert.

I got mine at Future Shop and I got it with the film cell bonus. I'll post a pic later.

I'd take it back and tell them the disc wouldn't play and that you want another one.

I might, but it's not really worth wasting gas on. I might do it later this week if I have some errands to do.

Probably the DVD. Even with the included DVD, I don't see the Blu-ray version having higher sales.

I just wished I had a nice big widescreen TV. 2.55:1 on my old CRT is going to be a pain.

I got my copy of the Blu-Ray today, and this was one of the rare moments where being sick paid off. I was too sick to go to work, but not too sick to skip this release, so I spent the whole day going through the discs. Some notes:

* The restoration is abso-freaking-lutely stunning. I found myself staring at the backgrounds more than the characters. It was like watching the film for the very first time. The colors are so lush and vivid, and I kept noticing most is how blonde Aurora is, now. Her hair really is golden rather than the dull, muted blonde from the SE. The definition in the transfer was so high that I was able to spot a few slightly-out-of-focus shots that resulted from the camera work. I can't wait to watch more animated classics on Blu-Ray, especially because...

* ...the clips of other Disney films shown in the "Picture Perfect" documentary also stunned me. Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan all looked especially fantastic. I guess the softness issue people were having with Peter Pan was a DVD mastering problem rather than a restoration problem.

* That documentary (along with the Sequence 8 and Eyvind Earle featurettes) are refreshingly honest. For example, I was surprised to learn that Walt was disappointed at the final film designs for Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, finding them to be watered down versions of Mary Blair's art. That's what caused him to choose a stylist (Eyvind Earle) who'd be onboard through all the production phases for Sleeping Beauty. That was one of the many things about this film I never knew till now.

* Kudos to Disney for restoring Grand Canyon, the Peter Tchaikovsky Story, and Four Artists Paint One Tree. All three looked great and were in HD, to boot.

* The Castle Walkthrough was fascinating. It's amazing how much effort and effects went into displays that were only a few feet deep. I'm really curious to see what the new revamped walkthrough will be like when it opens. I don't know if the DVD has this, but the BD has an easter egg where you can take a closer look at the souvenir book Tony Baxter talks about in the featurette.

* The galleries were missing some stills, but also gained some. Therefore, I don't find myself missing the SE galleries as much as I thought I would. Plus, more artwork is supposedly presented during the Visual Commentary, which I've yet to check out.

* The Dragon Encounter game was cool, but much too short. It could've easily been twice as long and with more aural effects.

* I wish the footage of Helene Stanley on the Mickey Mouse Club was included. It's tantalizingly shown for a few seconds in the main documentary and would've been a logical inclusion here after we got something similar for Cinderella.

* One oddity: I noticed that in the live-action photos, Hans Conried (best known as Captain Hook/Mr. Darling) was playing King Stefan. Not only that, but his unmistakable voice can be heard during both "I Happen to Have a Picture" demos. Was Conried originally slated to play King Stefan, or was he just doing Disney a favor? I would've liked to know more about this.

I still haven't checked out the commentary, fun facts, or any of the non-Dragon Encounter games, but I'll comment on those when I've done so. All in all, though, I consider this release an improvement over the SE. I don't really miss any of the little featurettes from that edition since all the info they covered is given more attention in this one. I only miss the old commentary, story outline, and gallery audio. Still, those things aren't enough for me to hold onto my SE.

I'd say this is my third favorite PE, not far behind Snow White and Aladdin's releases. I can't wait to see what Pinocchio has in store for us.

The one thing I don't like about the Blu-ray disc is that Merryweather is on the spine....

Sleeping Beauty & Grand Canyon: BD versus DVD screencaps

Post by Paka »

Several here have expressed curiosity over the image quality of the Sleeping Beauty's Blu-ray Disc as compared to the new Platinum Edition DVD, as well as the 2003 Special Edition release.

To that end, I've taken several comparison shots of each edition at their native resolution (1920x1080p for the BD, 720x480p for the DVDs). For the DVD shots, I have blown them up to 1920x1080 for equal representation to the BD, and have also fixed the black and white levels - whites are set to their proper 255, and blacks are at 0.

First, I'll list thumbnails of some Sleeping Beauty images side-by-side. In addition to much better contrast and color clarity, one will note the difference in aspect ratios between the two DVD editions.

Please note - these are PNG files and are about 3 MB in size each. The images give a pretty good idea of the high definition quality, but all the same, they do not fully represent what the film looks like in real time playback.

Left to right: Blu-ray Disc, Platinum Edition DVD, and Special Edition DVD.

Please click on the thumbnails for the full size 1920x1080 image!!

And here are some comparisons of the lovely Grand Canyon short, which has been significantly restored and is presented in high definition on the Blu-ray release. The transfer on the Special Edition DVD had a bit more picture showing on the left and right, so for the sake of a closer comparison I cropped the slight margins off.

Left to right: Blu-ray Disc, Platinum Edition DVD, and Special Edition DVD.

So there you go. Apologies in advance for the amount of time it takes to load these images. The Blu-ray.com admins are probably gonna skin me for this. ;)

That was actuallly one of the more clever aspects. I'm sure she would support Blu ray all the way.

I too must echo Disneykid's praise for the Blu-ray. however, I noticed on my display that Aurora's hair was still a muted blond and the most colours were similar to the SE transfer (but sharper, stronger and free of flickering issues) in contrast to the SD DVD on my regular 4x3 television which still looked quite good but had stronger colours (but not as sharp). It just may be the laptop I'm watching it on but I was quite pleased. however, I don't think I'll rebuy Cinderella Peter pan etc on Blu, I'll just stick to up coverting their DVDs since they'll surely use the same transfers. Other non platinum titles will only be repurchased if they have anamorphic video (for titles that were previously non-anamorphic) or more extensive (like Lilo and stitch actually getting a 2-disc set in NA) bonuses.

I did get around to hearing the commentary and it was very enjoyable. I'll keep the old SE for the content that is only on it to make some super crazy 4-dsic SB set.

To anyone who bitches about this new transfer: You suck, go by Blu.

Anyone who isn't sight challenged can obviously see, there is just no comparison between the BD and DVD releases. The resolution of the BDs is far superior.

Slightly off-topic: Was it the Grand Canyon short that inspired the Grand Canyon diorama in Disneyland?

Well...I got mine from a guy on Craig's list...actually I got three movies earlier on the 4th of October (last saturday) and he sold me (new and sealed and slipcovered even)

High School Musical 2: 2-disc edition

School House Rock: Election Collection

and

Sleeping Beauty DVD Platinum edition

All for $37

Not too shabby I thought

anyway the DVD I got did include the DVD Guide....

I would love to post pictures but I don't own a scanner or digital camera...

Although I can confirm it does say

Pinocchio - Spring 2009

Snow White And the Seven Dwarfs - Fall 2009

which you all probably knew that already...

Thanks for these, Paka!

The difference between the "Grand Canyon" transfers is amazing.

And yet we'll likely get someone coming in and saying, "The Bluray sucks, look how duller it is compared to the brightness of the DVD!"

I'm fine with my DVD for now (since I don't plan on having a high-definition television or Blu-Ray player for another year or two), but I know that if I did have them, I'd have skipped the DVD entirely and gone for the Blu-Ray at BestBuy.
Barbossa wrote:Slightly off-topic: Was it the Grand Canyon short that inspired the Grand Canyon diorama in Disneyland?
It's possible. Work started on the diorama in 1955, and the actual Grand Canyon short may have taken years to film, similar to the True Life Adventures (some of which had been filmed over a period of years, and condensed to a mere 80 minutes), which Grand Canyon wasn't a part of (but it functioned very much like one). So they may have already been filming for the short when they decided to add it to Disneyland as well. Or, it could be that the diorama inspired the theatrical short.

You're probably correct, but to those people I would say, that she has already stated that she adjusted the black levels and the contrast, but not the the saturation, which would account for the color differences. There is no reason to believe that the Platinum Edition DVD and BD would use completely different masters with different color timings, so calibrating appropriately should yield the proper results.

I got my Blu-Ray Sleeping Beauty today and am about to watch it, but I have to say that I'm annoyed with how the inserts were placed right in front of Disc 1. Other than that, I'm very happy with the cover and whatnot.

Edit: I need desperate help! Lol. I'm watching the Blu-Ray on my Sony Blu-Ray player, and it keeps giving me these really long loading screens, then when it plays, the sound is all choppy. Help!? I'm new to Blu-Ray.

Edit 2: The movie won't adjust to my screen. How do I do that?

I appreciate any/all help.

Well...I have not watched my copy of the Blu Ray as of this time...however though I am no expert on Blu Ray....I don't have an HDTV...(I have something called an EDTV Idk that's what the manual that came with the tv says....and it only goes up to 480p...and I would upgrade but due to lack of finances....My current TV will have to do..)

Anyway it could be your firmware on your Blu Ray Disc Player might need updating...I have a PS3 as my blu ray player...(that reminds me I still need to finish playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for PS3...) the only thing I can think of is since it's a new blu ray your player might need updated to the latest firmware....although I am sure someone here will be more for sure on that issue than I am...

I also heard of some sorta trouble with Sony PS3 and Sony Blu Ray Players with the Iron Man Blu Ray so it may be the same problem as that...

Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition

Post by Disney Duster »

Today Tim was a kind prince and came riding in his silver car, almost a white horse like Samson, and actually picked me up to pick up our pre-ordered DVDs from Disney Store, and took me to Best Buy across the street to use my gift cards to buy the Blu-ray and the re-released soundtrack! Tim actually got the soundtrack with the money he had, I just used some of my one gift card to help since he didn't have enough. But basically, it's like I got the Blu-ray for free, or as a gift!

PLEASE HELP: I peeled the bonus DVD off of my Blu-ray, and there's still three circles of sticky stuff stuck to the Blu-ray. What is the best way to get them off? Will they peel off easily, or can I scratch them off without scratching or ruining the plastic that protects the Blu-ray cover?

I heard that a blow-dryer actually helps peel the stickers off of the slipcover, will that work for the sticky goo as well?

Paka, so the old 2003 SE actually had a wider ratio for Grand Canyon? That's backwards and rotten! We get a wider ratio and more picture for the feature, but not for the short that came with the feature back then!

Flam-Ham, I can't believe you're not re-buying your favorite films on Blu-ray. Is Sleeping Beauty your #1 favorite? Maybe Peter Pan ain't one of your favs, but Cinderella is. And to be honest, the encoding or something is wrong with Cinderella on DVD that even 2009net noticed. Well, it figures for someone who loves the parks more. But if you love being immersed into a world like only a park in your face can, why wouldn't you try to get the best definition, closest to being up-close and life-like and immersive, for you favorite films?

The restoration was freaking fantastic...me, my mom, and my brother honestly felt like we were watching it for the first time.

I can come away saying that this is one of my favorite Disney movies.

Marky, I'm sorry, the Blu Ray took NOTHING away...it truly does make a difference.
