I found this listing for Breakfast Club bonus material on BBFC.co.uk:

* Will You Recognize Me? (3:12)
* I'll Be Alone (2:15)
* Dancing You Know It Baby (??, there's no running time for this)
* Think of the Tender Things That We Were Working On (3:47)
* Will You Call My Name? (3:08 )
* Brian Ralph Johnson (4:03)
* Andrew Clark (4:17)
* Claire Standish (3:13)
* John Bender (5:28 )
* Allison Reynolds (6:18 )
* Carl (4:58 )
* Richard Vernon (5:06)
* Don't You Forget About Me (5:49)

The BBFC clasifies them under the heading "Sincerely Yours," so I'm assuming these featurettes can be played back-to-back to form a 52-minute documentary. All I have to say is it's about time. Sixteen Candles and Weird Science shouldn't be too far off considering they (along with Breakfast Club) just went out of print. There better be Blu-Ray releases released on the same day.

It's depressing though, that since John Hughes isn't on good terms with Universal, we probably won't be getting commentaries or deleted scenes. This is especially sad for Breakfast Club since that movie originally ran twice as long, and Hughes is the only person who still has that extra 90 minutes of footage. Miracles can happen, though...

Universal is releasing a Breakfast Club SE? If they're doing this, they better release Phantasm II this year! Along with CE of Halloween II-III, Child's Play 2-5, and Army Of Darkness.

No, if Universal are released a Breakfast Club SE they'd better release all their Classic Monsters on Blu-ray in a box set with new supplements, and a SE of This Island Earth, and a SE of Mole People, and do something decent with their Marx Bros pictures, and release a proper 2 disc League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (being as the current single disc has an easter egg that says "welcome to the easter egg on disc 2...") and they'd better... well, they'd just better be better in general.

So how many re-releases have there been for this movie? I bet you anything this will be a blu-ray release since it already arrived on the HD-DVD format and therefore since a high-def print exists it would be fairly easy to put one together.

The real question remains will it be the 3 hour cut that John Hughes refuses to let the public see.

Excited to hear about the BBFC findings, but you missed out on this one, Kelvin. Razz

Maybe we can get a cast commentary. Unless they say "We're only doing it with John Hughes...".

True. After all, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut took only 26 years to happen...

Wire Hanger wrote:

Just the fifth. Razz

The first was one of Universal's early DVDs, I think, back in 1998 or so. It then got remastered in 2003, and released on its own and in the "High School Reunion" boxset. Then there was the "Brat Pack: Movies & Music Collection" a few years ago (I want to say 2005) that simply took the HSR boxset and added a CD. Then, of course, the HD-DVD/DVD combo.

God, I hope so.

At the same time, I also hope they include (via seamless branching) the TV version (with the music substitutions, alternate scenes, and no more cussing!), as that's the one I've seen most often (what with it being on TV like...at least once a week on some channel somewhere).

Oh, wow, I don't know how I missed the Weird Science classification, Albert. It's just as well, though. It's my least favorite of John Hughes' 80s teen films. Now where the heck is Sixteen Candles...

Including the extended and alternate TV bits is an excellent idea. I, too, and am actually more familiar with the TV edit (and its hilarious censoring of the swears) than I am with the theatrical version.

Ditto.

I think, though, that's because its appeal really only limits itself to teenage boys, and that as the viewers get older, they start seeing it as less and less funny than they originally thought.

Kelvin wrote:

Ditto again. It's probably my second favorite of the John Hughes films (Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite). I remember there used to be serious talks (or just a lot of rampant rumors) of a sequel with the cast called Thirty-Two Candles.

One thing is for certain, though. If/when they do get around to doing bonus features for Sixteen Candles, we more than likely won't be hearing from Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) as the guy has pretty much cut off all ties with Hollywood and is content with his family and carpentry business.

And now we've got the Sixteen Candles features classified under the documentary heading "Celebrating Sixteen Candles":

* U R Unique (5:11)
* Greetings from Shermer, Illinois (2:16)
* Do You Remember Your First Time? (3:30)
* Where the Heart Is... (4:16)
* Samantha (2:05)
* I (Heart) Jake (3:44)
* Farmer Ted (2:54)
* Taking Attendance (3:06)
* R We PC? (4:10)
* Memories (3:03)
* Classic (4:07)

Not as long as Breakfast Club's, but hopefully it'll be a case of quality over quantity. Here's hoping we get some sort of commentary and gallery on these releases (I'm not holding my breath for a trailer when it comes to Universal).

Behold the power that is known in this pityfully limited dimension as DVDTimes!

John Hughes High School Flashback Collection (R1) in August

The Other-Dimensional Oracles of Optical Media wrote:
Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of the High School Flashback Collection on 5th August 2008. John Hughes’ seminal eighties teen comedies The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science are to be re-released with new extras as part of this collection and separately in new “Flashback Editions”. Retail is $39.98 SRP for the collection or $19.98 SRP each.

[Blah Blah Blah Extras and Soundtracks etc]

The “High School Flashback Collection” will feature collectible “Locker” packaging.

Wow, great to hear that The Breakfast Club will be getting an audio commentary. Wish the other Clubbers could have joined them, though.

Still, it sucks that neither Sixteen Candles nor The Breakfast Club gets those famous deleted scenes (especially since some of them were incorporated into the TV versions), and that Sixteen Candles seems to get the lightest treatment in terms of bonus features. It doesn't even get the trailer, while the other two (surprisingly) do.

It's definitely disappointing that Sixteen Candles has neither the trailer nor some other feature to go along with the documentary the way Breakfast Club (with its commentary) and Weird Science (with its TV pilot) do. A commentary with Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall would've been superb. At least Anthony will be with Judd for the Breakfast Club commentary. If only Molly, Ally, and Emilio could've joined them, but I believe there's some strife amongst some of the Clubbers (Judd and Emilio, I think?).

There's no mention of a Blu-Ray release for any of these, which is also disappointing. I'll buy Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club on DVD, anyway, since I've never owned them before. I doubt any future BD release will be a drastic improvement. Now, if John Hughes happens to participate on those and provide deleted scenes, I'll gladly double dip...

DVDTimes now has the cover art and some menus for these:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=67856

I'm surprised to say that I really like Breakfast Club's and Sixteen Candles' covers (which are the only ones I really care about, anyway). Even though I love it when original theatrical posters are used as cover art, I admit I was getting sick of seeing them on every edition for these films. I'm really glad Universal didn't opt for the floating heads format.

Also loving the covers! The Breakfast Club cover is perfect! The menus look cool too! Very excited about this! I will pick up Weird Science too.

OK Best Buy's website now says it's release date is September 16 instead of August 5th, so I'm guessing it's been delayed.
