On the whole I'm unimpressed - there seems to be little of any concequence there - the famouse "bug football" sequence seems to be only 20 odd seconds!

I think I'd rather have the original 1990's television "Making of" then all this "fluff".

Still there may be more to come, and I'll reserve judgement until I see the final disc.

Yeah, I wish they'd put the TV special on there as well. Hopefully, as always, this stuff will play a lot better than it reads. And perhaps, like with last year's B & B DVD, the US DVD will have a little more than this, even if it's only celebrity introductions.

I really do wish that this set would knock me off my feet the way Star Wars I and The Ultimate Toy Box did. If only Disney really meant "is now the king of all DVDs!"

Thanks for the info.
What is the BBFC?

British Board of Film Classification :?:

Are we talking about the Region 2 DVD, not Region 1?

Hmm, music videos from Simba's Pride? Interesting. I didn't expect them to be on this DVD set.

I think the Music Video for "Love Will Find a Way" is 3 minutes too short.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of the January 1993 version "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" where Simba and Nala sing.

Yes, British Board of Film Classification so these will be for the R2 UK DVD release. There may still be more supplements to come.

As for "Love Will Find A Way" - I notice on a lot of Disney DVD's they advertise a music video when it's not really a full video (such as Smash Mouth's "I Wanna Be Like You" on Jungle Book 2 most recently). Perhaps the so-called music video for "Love Will Find A Way" is nothing more than a promo-reel disguised as a music video.

Well, since the music video is going to be almost 2 minutes (acording to BBFC), I think it is the whole thing.

As for the extras, I think it's going to be a very nice DVD - not as good as "Snow White" or "Atlantis", but better than "Beauty and the Beast" (at least I hope).
I also hope they don't botch the picture quality of the feature stuffing the disc with a lot of material, like they did with BatB (no, the picture quality is not bad, but it's not near-perfection like other Disney transfers).

And it seems the American DVD will have more features indeed. At least the BBFC listing doesn't mention the audio comentary track and the extra version of the film (but certainly they will be on the DVD).

One of the features I am most curious about is the "Enhanced Home Theater" thing. Hmm, and if it is only a DTS track in disguise? Well, let's wait and see!

There must be more features to come because we've got the audio commentary to be rated and isn't there going to be long interviews with Elton John and Tim Rice about the music? Also isn't there going to be a new "Making Of..." special?

On the whole, that batch of extras seems pretty good for a normal SE or CE, but for a Platinum Edition, I'd have expected A LOT more. For example, why don't we have an ACTUAL documentary instead of dozens of mini featurettes, unless they're all branched together by a play all feature i.e. Beauty and the Beast? This release seems inferior to Beauty and the Beast's, which in itself was inferior to Snow White's. Are the platinums going to be progressively worse?? Heck, Sleeping Beauty's release sounds a heck of a lot better than this fluff...I seriously hope the Platinums boost up quality-wise in time for the other releases like Cinderella, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid...

The BBFC only classify stuff as it is sent to them. In the past Disney, as well as other studios have submitted supplements in batches. So it is possible that more supplements will be added (none of the menus or game footage has been certified yet). To take certain points:

All New Making Of - this is supposed to be just showing the making of "The Morning Report" song. It is almost certain to be certified seperately/in another batch unless that feature will be missing from the DVD (I have a feeling this will be on disc one, and in the UK there is going to be a DTS track - perhaps Disney have dropped this feature)

Elton John/Tim Rice - these could be included in:

00:03:46:22 | MUSIC JOURNEY - MUSICAL INSPIRATION
00:03:11:07 | MUSIC JOURNEY - LANDMARK SONGWRITING
00:04:20:09 | MUSIC JOURNEY - ORCHESTRAL COLOR
00:02:55:09 | MUSIC JOURNEY - SCORING EMOTION
00:03:46:06 | MUSIC JOURNEY - AFRICAN INFLUENCE
00:04:17:18 | MUSIC JOURNEY - AUDIO SEQUEL
00:01:39:15 | MUSIC JOURNEY - FULL CIRCLE

Commentary - this is always classified as a seperate entry on the BBFC database. Look for it to appear soon.

Special Edition/Normal Edition cuts - again these are always classified seperately, so again look for them to appear soon.

Sleeping Beauty may not look much on paper, but it's a meaty and substantial set - helped by the longer features and featurettes making the whole viewing process more satisfying. And of course, you get the missing trailers on the R1 release!

As for the Lion King - it's not bad - there's already 3 hours of content on there, and the picture galleries will probably add another 2 hours of viewing time making a substantial 5 hour + of content (plus the commentary track).

Like many others, I would prefer that 3+ hours to be presented in proper, long running documentaries - (maybe 3 1 hour documentaries or so). Each segment is far to short - even when string together like the BatB disc it just seems less than it is.

Atlantis did the string-together-to-make-one-documentary trick, but each segment on it's own was 5-10 minutes creating an illusion of more detailed content.

I still think Atlantis is the ultimate Disney Collector's Edition - when you hit perfection, why change it?

Well, I don't think TLK's bonus material looks bad at all; I just think that for a Platinum release, the level should be raised, or at least matched with Snow White, Atlantis, and the other jam packed DVD's.

I can already tell I'm going to like the Sleeping Beauty DVD more than TLK's because SB's is aimed at die hard Disney/movie fans, whereas TLK seems aimed at general families and audiences. The only way TLK's DVD excels SB's is the fact that it has commentary, which is the only thing SB is lacking.

I'm curious to see how the January SE releases of Alice, Pocahontas, and Lilo compare to TLK's platinum release and SB's SE release.

What gets me about these latter releases are the short 30 second or so introductions. What is the point? What is the point of having somebody come onto the screen for less than half a minute and says a few sentances.

They should either put the introductions as is on screen in writing, or have a proper 3-6 minute introduction. I'm sure each section that they are introducing has enough content, history and opinion to do that.

I know some people don't like the "this is how we animate a film" approch of some of the early collectors discs (citing repetition) but I don't really see a problem with this - each "presenter" and film put their own spin on things. All they seem to be replacing it with is - as we like to say on this board - insubstantial "fluff"?

Luke - I suggest "fluff" is the official Ultimate Disney DVD word! :)

Ok, i must have been living under a rock or something, but when were these titles confirmed as SE's for january? I've heard about the Lilo SE, but the part about Alice and Pocahontas is news to me. Any info would be appreciated... :D

That in addition to the old making of documentary and everyone would be happy... I hope they will include such a documentary but I don't think so...

Where are the trailers?

180 min and the comentary are still very good but for The Lion King I expect a little more... But its still much more than BatB had.
